25.01.2022 Albert Lee one night, Bob Dylan the next. You only live once. Thanks for the images Juan Mahony!
24.01.2022 And here's the full story on Ben Leece. His new album project with Shane Nicholson may be the breakthrough he's been chasing.
23.01.2022 The news game is faster than ever. Good friend and freelance writer Alex Morris posted breaking news on social that The Edwards Bar in Newcastle was on fire. She provided some great images, and video, and I drove back into the city, shot a Facebook Livestream and posted this story at 2.30am today. Nobody was injured, which is good. The venue was a great cultural change agent (part-owned by the bass player of world-famous band Silverchair).
23.01.2022 I haven't posted many stories lately, but I managed to knock this one out last week. There are several reasons for his success, but the quality of his work, his genial nature and his ability to be organised stand out.
21.01.2022 His songs are so gritty, I feel like I'm sitting at a bar, watching real life when I hear him.
20.01.2022 Straight to the point: Simon McCarthy's warm video of Beth Gleeson at Common Circus in Belmont.
20.01.2022 Jason Lowe's musical ride is the story of many a musician. Are you good enough to succeed? Is it your calling? You've got songs to sing, audience or not.
20.01.2022 Looking forward to Charles Olsen and his Newcastle film mates making a feature film in the not too distant future. This may not be the one, but it's a sign they are capable.
19.01.2022 This story began with a phone call from a farmer who sells his own meat. He was stricken from the Newcastle City Farmers Markets, but needed to let customers know he was still around, still in business. Here's his story.
19.01.2022 It's not easy to put yourself in Sarah Holden's shoes, and consider what you would do in the same circumstance.
18.01.2022 This is not art for the light-hearted. It is provocative, intense and intriguing. Hats off to Jessi England for the fortitude to create it at The Lock-Up. It is not a matter of whether I agree with the content, it's a matter of making these subjects part of the social discussion.
18.01.2022 Never a dull moment. Knocked this out quickly the other day. Great tip on the story from Mel Murray, fortunate to have previous photos of Newcastle show from Paul Dear.
17.01.2022 Miss you already, Tony Joe. See you on the other side. Here's a piece I wrote about him in March 2015.
17.01.2022 XR is bringing nine of his didgeridoos and a whole lot more to Newcastle next month. Glad he took my call while he was chilling on a Queensland beach.
16.01.2022 It's refreshing to read another perspective on life in this city. It's not a case of an identity crisis, rather, just a different way of looking at who we are, what we have and how we live.
16.01.2022 Bailey Watts and Peter Danks are so enthusiastic, they aren't worried about barriers. They just want to make movies. They're off to a good start.
15.01.2022 There is much to like about this album, but it is the the coal protest songs that are extraordinary. Folk songs for a new generation.
15.01.2022 I've had an incredible run of talented musicians for interviews this year. I was going to call this my year of film (and it's still early) but at this rate it's going to be a banner year for music.
15.01.2022 John Butler strikes gold with his new album. It may have taken four years to produce since his last album, but it will prove to be worth the wait for fans.
14.01.2022 Mario Minichiello is a genuine character, as well as an extremely talented illustrator and academic. This story came from a lively interview over an hour in two locations.
13.01.2022 It's been three years since James Thomson's last album, Cold Moon. That was pretty special, and his new one promises to reach greater heights. #jamesthomson
12.01.2022 Another conversation with Ben Harper. A gentleman. A legend. "I have yet to play a song the same way twice."
11.01.2022 Time flies when you're having fun . . .
10.01.2022 I watched over 30 hours of live music in April. But it's May now, and this the best I've seen in quite a while. And great photos from Paul Dear, once again.
10.01.2022 Strip it back, make it sing, see if it holds up. After two intensive years of travel and shows, Will Crighton stops to take measure of what he's created. Yep, it's sound, it will carry. And back on the road for new destinations, new combinations. Go, Will, go.
10.01.2022 Bali Blues Brothers covering a classic.
09.01.2022 In the dark of the night, it's just two voices, his and mine, even though we are 12,000 miles apart. Strangers yes, but we find some common ground.
07.01.2022 A movie about terrorism that focuses on the victims. Good idea, great movie.
07.01.2022 Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Lots of editing and planning going on. But, I did have time to file this piece, which ran in a special Women of Influence edition of Weekender on July 14.
07.01.2022 Staying ahead of what kind of wines people want to drink is quite a talent - they don't know what they want until you give it to them. Jessica McLeish is not a winemaker, but she's a key part of her family's wine business.
07.01.2022 I think nearly every person bought an EP and got an autograph from this charmer at the end of the night. Thanks for the great images, once again, Paul Dear. #lizottesnewcastle #ryanmcmullanmusic
05.01.2022 Talented. Talkative. And in touch with his fans.
04.01.2022 The oldest of the four Robertson sisters from Eleebana, her music speaks for itself. Hello Beth Gleeson. Take note of the video clip by the Herald's Simon McCarthy inside the package.
03.01.2022 He has a richer vein of songs, a little less "anger" and a helluva band. William Crighton is moving in the right direction.
03.01.2022 Gleny Rae Virus hooked us up with this character and he was good value, a true storyteller.
03.01.2022 So we've been making some adjustments with the music videos we've been shooting. As of this week, we are landing them on YouTube. Take a look.
01.01.2022 Pretty entertaining night in the Big Smoke. Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite at the Sydney Opera House. As Ronnie Hawkins said to Bill Graham offstage at The Last Waltz: "big time, Bill, this is big time." And once again, honoured to have my own shooter (the only shooter at the show) on deck. Paul Dear, take a bow, mate.
