25.01.2022 Jimbo chatted with Nat about his marathon training progress. This weekend he is running 24 km. But yesterday they spoke about making it to 22 km under the hot Darwin Conditions. Here is the link http://jimssportslab.com/2019//16/22-km-mark-marathon-chat/
25.01.2022 I was looking at this shot of Alis funeral procession and occurred to me that what I thought were hands raised in acknowledgement were actually people taking pictures - another disruption from technology.. This picture is a screen shot from the ABC news website of the funeral and photo taken by John Sommers 11 as acknowledged in the caption. http://jimssportslab.com//11/has-a-new-salute-been-evolving
24.01.2022 I have been trying to comprehend how far back 46,000 years is. That is the length of time that the aboriginal art, tools, etc was that was destroyed by an Australian mining company a week or so ago. 46,000 years The pyramids in Egypt are about 5,000 years That context really still means nothing I finally got my head around it by: [ 139 more words ] http://jimssportslab.com/2020/06/07/521/
23.01.2022 Here are the publications from the conference (the next blog down). The Journal of Fitness Research is a fast growing journal and a perfect journal to bring the conferences theme of sport, technology, and innovation. http://jimssportslab.com/2016/08/09/astn-q-sneak-peak
23.01.2022 Natalie the marathoner finished the New York Marathon - yay. Then went on a celebratory tour of the USA. Last week, she finally arrived back in Darwin and caught up with Jimbo. Here she is, talking to him about the run, and what may lie ahead.... Here are clips of their conversation - and would Jimbo be silly? nah, never... 22.01.2022 A new publication titled: "The development and validation of using inertial sensors to monitor postural change in resistance exercise" by Sam Gleadhill, Jim Lee, and Daniel James is now in press. Sam is a new PhD student and this work is from his Honours research. Sam now has three publications from his honours year and is well on his way to establishing himself in the field of inertial sensor technology and its applications into lifting monitoring, both in the workplace and in sporting environments. Remember she is doing it to raise money for the Miracle Babies Foundation, so if you wish to donate, go to the link in the last blog - thanks in advance. http://jimssportslab.com//02/natalie-the-marathoner-update/
19.01.2022 Here is a clip of Natalie and jimbo chatting about him reaching 20 km. quite an achievement for him in Darwin during a dry Wet Season. Even with the temp issues, he is on track for his marathon preparations. Click here to watch the video. http://jimssportslab.com//03/05/20-km-run-albeit-a-week-l/
19.01.2022 A Batak is a Sports Science tool that we can use to measure reaction, coordination, and agility of a person. Typically, when people first have a go, they score somewhere in the 20 hits in 30 secs. Here is Jim having a casual crack at it. Now here is Jim having a real crack... The challenge is now on for CDU students and staff (and outsiders??) to match it. [ 62 more words. ] http://jimssportslab.com/2016/03/03/batak-attack-2
19.01.2022 Jimbo has been fortunate enough to have hosted a visit by Tatsuro ISHIZUKA who is about to commence his PhD at Keio University, Japan and under the guidance of Professor Yuji OHGI. Tatsu enjoyed wrestling Crocodiles - well watching them from the safety of a cruise boat - and swimming in rock pools - no crocs - at Litchfield National Park. http://jimssportslab.com/2019//19/a-little-chat-with-tatsu/
19.01.2022 It looks like an interesting article tonight on ABCtvs 4Corners. Leading into the Olympics and a comprehensive coverage of the drugs issue - from all angles. Here is a link to the ABCnews article that introduces the tv program. http://jimssportslab.com/2016/07/17/drugs-in-sport
18.01.2022 As Jim woke this morning, and thinking of the day ahead, he realised he was a mere pup at 21 years of age when Richmond last won a premiership. The reflection of the drought since (barring 1982 grand final appearance) has made knowing the Tiges have made it today all the more sweater. 18.01.2022 Congratulations to our SABEL NT director James Lee (and founder of Jims Sports Lab) on his recent promotion to Senior Lecturer at Charles Darwin University and recent publication. Dr. Lee ha Source: Congratulations James Lee http://jimssportslab.com/2017//08/congratulations-james-lee
16.01.2022 Here is a blog from our friends at Sports Technology about todays Research and Innovation in Sports Technology. Jims Sports Lab is proud to have been actively involved with a sponsored award for the best student poster. Rex Whiticker was the worthy winner. Other highlights were Nicole McLeods and Sam Gleadhills papers being accepted for the half day conference and associated publication in the Journal of Fitness Research. http://jimssportslab.com//translating-research-to-innovati
16.01.2022 Here is an interesting article from the ABC news website where it is now said that the skeletal remains from the early hominid, "Lucy" died after falling from a tree. The article is a little bit timely for CDU Funky Anat students where we have been looking at the upper limb over the past couple of weeks and can see what we have been talking about can be applied to palaeontology. http://jimssportslab.com//29/looks-like-lucy-fell-from-a-t
14.01.2022 Some great news from our Griffith mates. They have won the right to host the ISEA Engineering of Sport 2018. And perfect timing with the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast creating a very topical environment. http://jimssportslab.com//announcing-isea2018-the-engineer
13.01.2022 Who said sport does not give back to society. This Story of Katherine Switzer is an excellent example in many ways. The other thing about this ABC news story is that I had forgotten it was not all that long ago that women were not allowed to compete in marathon type events. People like Ms Switzer doing makes changes, sitting does not.... http://jimssportslab.com/2017/03/24/261-inspiring
12.01.2022 Over the past week, Jim has been in Kanoya, Japan as a guest of the National Institute of Fitness and Sports (NIFS). While here he streamed one of his CDU lectures live back to Australia. With the expert help of his colleague, Associate Professor Tomohito WADA of NIFS, they streamed in both 2D and (almost) 3D - it was a 360 degree camera that the viewer can have a full view of the room and if viewed on a smart phone, a virtual type view of it. 12.01.2022 Towards the end of February Bec Mellifont from the Uni of the Sunny Coast and Jim were invited to Japan by Professor Yuji OHGI of Keio University. OHGI sans invitation and generosity enabled Bec and Jim to visit the National Institute of Fitness and Sport (NIFS) in Kanoya and assist in an experiment looking at forces and loads during a simulated bend of an athletics track in their Sports Performance Laboratory. 10.01.2022 Last week, under the guiding wisdom of our colleague, Dan James, the inaugural Science and Sport Meets Parliament. This was a Queensland government initiative. Charles Darwin University PhD candidate, Sam Gleadhill represented the university - the only non QLD based uni invited to present. Sam demonstrated what our research is in regards to wearable technology, not only in sport, but also applications into the workplace and migration to animal monitoring too. 09.01.2022 Last week was Week 1 and CDU. So Ange and Jim got together to do a very quick debrief of the week. Here it is http://jimssportslab.com/2019/03/11/jimbo-talks-to-ange/
09.01.2022 This is an interesting story about technology revolutionising education - a lot to ponder - especially the concept of learning. It comes back to the individual. Something I will aim to do. At least I have got the Youtube bit right. Have a look at more Veritasium clips. Some are just entertaining, most are educational... http://jimssportslab.com//veritasium-talking-about-educati
07.01.2022 Natalie the marathoner has been recognised as fundraiser of the month - link here - She has done a remarkable job of raising her target well ahead of schedule. But Natalie is not slowing down and is continuing to raise money for her great cause - The Miracle Babies Foundation. If you wish to donate, please do. Here are the last two videos that we have done on her training in prep for the New York Marathon: 19 July and 27 July. http://jimssportslab.com/2018/07/31/fundraiser-of-the-month/

05.01.2022 Last week, Natalie the Marathoner ran and completed the New York Marathon. Well done!!! Natalie picked up her number a day or two beforehand. Ran the race. Then picked up her finishers medallion. After the run, she said that marathoners are all mad (is she saying that she thinks she is mad???) and never wants to see another bridge again.... 05.01.2022 The tech week. This week Jim has a conversation with his colleague Associate Professor Daniel James from the SABEL Labs at Griffith Uni. Danny is a world leader in the Sports Engineering world in general and with a particular interest in wearables. This is an interesting conversation. It has been deliberately created without Powerpoint slides. However, the discussion between Danny and Jim is very interesting and a lot can be taken away to better understand sports technology, where it has come from, where it is, and where it is heading too. 05.01.2022 A couple of months back, Jim was approached to use wearables to monitor a casual runner to prepare to run a marathon - the New York Marathon no less. Natalie Merida has made the commitment to run the NY Marathon in order to raise money for Miracle Babies. This is a not for profit organisation that supports families of premature babies. 04.01.2022 This is an article from todays "The Conversation" media site. It backs up the basis of the technology review assignment in SPE205 about the need to be able to critically review technologies. I was a little surprised at the level of claims made by some. http://jimssportslab.com//apps-and-how-to-pick-appropriate

02.01.2022 Here is a link to an article from the ABC News website. It talks about the need for doctors and specialists to better communicate with patients. I think it equally applies to us and our need to communicate to our clients effectively. Good communication create engagement, therefore increasing a greater chance to motivate people to continue exercising - I think it is a great challenge for people to continue compliance in their exercise regime and it is our role to assist this. http://jimssportslab.com/2017/08/10/effective-communication/
