18.01.2022 Dear All, The Community Recovery has Just put out a media release on a number off issues affecting our community - see below. If you feel strongly about any of ...these issues including anything we may have missed we encourage you to write a letter to the Pakenham and/or Warragul Gazette’s or ring our MP Federal Russell Broadbent, State MP Garry Blackwood or MP Harriet Shing. Please email us on [email protected] should you wish to raise your concerns with the Recovery Committee. We are seeking your support and we need to work together to ensure our community receives exactly the same support and consideration other Fire affected communities are receiving. It’s a matter of equality and justice. The Forgotten Fires Bad to Worse The Community Recovery Committee Bunyip Complex Fires' has great empathy and compassion for all those people experiencing the recent horrific bushfires. Having been through exactly the same experience only 10 months ago and still working through the recovery process we completely understand the financial and emotional support that is so vital to the recovery process and the mental toll that is experienced by the members of the affected communities. Many of us still haven’t started rebuilding and are still going through the arduous clean up and permit phase. Not one family or individual who lost a home has yet completed their rebuilding. They will not have a new home for many months and as a result are suffering extreme financial and emotional hardship. The CRC, after a hard fought battle and with the support and advocacy of Russell Broadbent MP and the Pakenham Gazette, finally got access to National Disaster Relief Funds in December 2019 - 8 months after the event. This enabled amongst other benefits a payment of $1000 per adult affected plus $400 per child. It has now transpired the Federal Government Hotline is advising Bunyip Fire victims they are no longer eligible because six months has expired as the Bunyip Fires commenced on the 1st of March. The fact we didn’t get the Disaster Relief funding till December 2019 matters not. Further, the Federal Human Services website has June 2020 as the cut off date. On the surface this disgraceful situation appears to be a classic example of bureaucratic bumbling rather than an insensitive, mean spirited, cost cutting government. No matter it requires immediate resolution. The simple and just resolution to all of the above is that victims of the Bunyip Complex Fires are immediately included and afforded the same relief, support and funding criteria as victims of the current horrific fires. This includes the new funding support offered by the Federal Government Disaster Relief Funds, the recent announcement of the Free Property Clean Up by the State government and the Red Cross, $10,000 Emergency grant to those who lost their homes. The families and individuals who lost their homes here and indeed everything they owned are still suffering extreme, worsening emotional and financial hardship. The Bunyip Complex Fires, 30 homes destroyed, 297 households, farms and businesses profoundly financially and emotionally impacted, no disaster relief funding for 8 months and now cut off again. They call us the forgotten fires. Tony Fitzgerald President

12.01.2022 What about the War at Home? On behalf of the community, The Bunyip Fires Complex Community Recovery Committee has been actively lobbying to address the signific...ant issues that confront the community, including mobile black spots, forest management, income support for people who have lost everything and the clean-up of private property and roadsides. On reflection and looking at what is required in future to attempt to minimise bushfire destruction and the ongoing potential disaster that awaits us in Victoria and elsewhere in Australia the CRC has arrived at three key considerations: 1. Victoria needs to immediately review its inaction on forest management in particular, control burns. 2. There needs to be substantial investment in state of the art fire-fighting equipment. 3. Adopt a National approach with the accompanying investment, technology and science to manage and respond to bushfires. Back burning is a divisive issue with many in the community opposed to it. However, in reality, if specific areas of the bush in Garfield North and Tonimbuk had been strategically burnt back then the massive destruction that occurred here would have been minimised. The last bushfires in Garfield North were in the 1930s and the undergrowth which had since accumulated on the forest floor was impassable, providing an enormous fuel load. Sadly, a similar perfect storm is currently brewing in many areas of Victoria. Last week our Committee met with the Commissioner for Emergency Services, Andrew Crisp who acknowledged the need for regular consultation with local residents on forest management. Locals have first-hand knowledge of the forest, accompanying wind patterns and potential fire paths. The CRC welcomed the Commissioners words. Victoria is extremely fortunate to have a person of the calibre of Commissioner Crisp who is inclusive, listens and is not afraid to act. This year the NSW Government purchased a Boeing 737-309 under a 10 year $23ml lease. The deal came from the Canadian Firm, Coulson Aviation Crew. This Boeing jet can drop 15,100 litres of water or gel on a fire, or lay in front of a fire the same amount of retardant, while helicopters drop 3,000 litres. The Federal Government has committed $50 billion for 12 Attack Class submarines. By contrast a Boeing was leased for defence of the home front. In Australia and particularly for us living in Victoria the real war right now is bushfires. Climate change or whatever you want to call what is going on is now a war. We need to invest in the fight as much as we do in our armed forces. Why isn’t there similar strategic thinking and indeed the same kind of resource pool made available to fight the war that is right now in our back yards? Why aren’t insurance companies also contributing proactively to provide equipment and resources to fight fires? Preventative action might actually help to reduce their massive payouts. Reaction rather than pro-action seems to be the current mindset. Apart from the horrific loss of life on Black Saturday that fire resulted in $4.5 billion worth of damage. Eight months after the March 2019 Bunyip Complex Fires the cumbersome process used by the State and Federal governments to pay for the damage here moves at a glacial pace. The money to help fund the recovery still hasn’t been released. Again, where is the management - where is the coordination? There is no doubt the Black Saturday Royal Commission recommendations saved lives in the Bunyip Fires. However, we can do better. Many recommendations designed to minimise fire spread and damage have never been implemented in spite of the many taxpayer dollars used to generate them. Ten years on there has been no progress on eliminating the mobile phone black spots, yet we are only 80k’s from Melbourne. The world has changed and a national response is urgently required. Insurance companies and the government need to wake from their slumber and actually start contributing to a preventative approach. This requires a massive war chest to fight the ever-present, potential horror that awaits the many future victims of the deadly combination of fires and poor planning. Tony Fitzgerald Chair Community Recovery Committee 0408 563 753 Footnote: The Bunyip Complex Fires where fortunately there were no loss of life impacted 270 properties, destroyed 30 homes and burnt out 100,000 acres. BlazeAid laid over 300 kilometres of fencing. The horror that people in NSW are now living with and facing this summer only reinforces the urgent need for a national, well resourced, scientific approach to bushfire management in Australia.

12.01.2022 Gary Blackwood MP bravely speaks out about what is now termed the Forgotten Fire, in the hope that the government will address our fire-ravaged community, and our massive losses. Along with a lot of our neighbours who lost houses, sheds, fencing and more, we lost 15 buildings in this fire, as well as our livelihood and work of the last 21 -35 years : every facet of our business was wiped out in one day: winery, winebar, gallery, and accommodation, our house, our shedding, all... their contents, our artist's work, our wine and beer making equipment as well as our current and future wine and beer stocks, our grapes and all of our fencing. Our entire business and farm at Jinks Creek was wiped off the map and the Government have neither visited our area nor acknowledged the devastation. Without the assistance of amazing volunteers, friends, family and clients, whom we thank deeply for their kindness and empathy and contributions, we would not have made it through these first 9 months without our business. The government needs to address the future of forest management and its consequences, and help our community to rebuild and recover. See more
