16.01.2022 47 years ago this week in 1974, I took my first class at the Scientific Judo and Karate School, Brooklyn Academy of Music. The strong recommendation came from our friend and neighbor, Connie Puglisi (RIP), and sister of Jennie Puglisi-Walsh. I remember so clearly walking with my mom Virginia V. Fisher and Dad from Cobble Hill to Clinton Hill that cold Saturday morning; taking the rickety elevator to the 2nd floor then walking up another flight of steps to the rooftop dojo; me...eting Mrs Yang for the first time; having my dad help me put on my dogi and tie my belt; the first time I stepped onto the judo mat: and the time that Shihan Randolph James spent with me teaching me some techniques in the back room before classes started on the main floor. He also showed me the side split and a high roundhouse kick. I'll never forget his encouraging words that morning. Afterwards, I took a spirited class with Kanemura Sensei, my first teacher. Even on my first day of training, there were so many people who helped shape my path in life, in an activity that would become my true passion and vocation! Osu!" See more
