11.01.2022 I’ve always advocated for being gentle on yourself. But for those of you who, like me, see someone say that and then subconsciously goes with the story that feeling good, comfortable, and healthy in your body will just happen by itself instead, I suggest to you it’s also okay to do the work. In fact, you need to. It’s okay to tend to your body as if you care about it. It’s not shallow to work on your fitness. For years I told myself (subconsciously) that by working out, I... was focusing too much on how I look, so I would rebel against the shallowness of the world and just.. you know, kinda trust it’ll be fine. That I’ll feel good in myself without it, and that THAT is healthy body love. For years, I held myself back because of this. The thing is, I did kind of just coast by. I didn’t hate my body. I wasn’t particularly unhealthy looking. But I also recognise now how uncomfortable I was in my body. In my own skin. How much my defiance against shallowness was actually holding me back in feeling more whole in myself. I was actively ignoring an inherent need within me. THAT is unhealthy. Now I feel a far healthier relationship with my body and how I let it express. I teach it that it’s strong and stable by allowing it to be I learn how shifting things on a somatic level by moving improves my mindset and emotional state far more than sitting and thinking about things could. I seek out information and get educated on what is ideal for my body - how I best move and strengthen, the time in the day that suits more for my energy sustainability, all of it - not because it’s shallow. No, no, young Jess. But because my approach to health is WHOLE, and that includes my body. My energy levels, how I show up in the world, my ability to experience life the way I’d like to is all reliant on how I move my body. 06.01.2022 WHAT ABOUT WELLBEING? 6 years ago when this picture was taken, I was on holidays overseas (ugh, what I wouldn’t give ) and thought I was pretty good at taking care of my wellbeing. I meditated most mornings (did I do this while away? I’m not sure...), thought I ate healthy for my body, thought I was in the right job for me, and thought the people I was chasing to have around me, particularly in the environment I lived, were aligned. My goodness. Thank GOD for growth. ... I do not chase these things anymore, because I’m more easily able to recognise what isn’t actually good for me. This came through not just information, but somatic learning and embodiment, and guidance and education around that information so it’s not all too much. Another thing about that trip is I spent a LOT of it with a lot of anxious noise. And confusion. If I’m doing everything right, why do I feel so confused? The thing is, we can only do the best we can with what we know. But without guidance (at this point) it was just taking shots in the dark. I could get so far intuitively, but even the areas that were useful for me were still only a guess. That anxiety got worse before it got better. I was trying to be perfect in my practice. I had so much information that my critically thinking brain didn’t have the space to take on. I constantly veered in and out of paralysis by analysis.
