24.01.2022 If music has the ability to define a generation and music influences people to feel or act in a particular way, then what is the potential impact of mainstream pop music going through a sad phase? This great post about the changing sound of Triple J’s Hottest 100 outlines how the average speed of songs in the Hottest 100 is slowing, with the weekend’s countdown having the slowest tempo on record. In the article Tim Byron, a music writer and music psychologist at the Univers...ity of Wollongong, suggests that sad music is fashionable right now and that could be why we’re seeing a dip in positivity. This makes me wonder, what might the impact of that dip in positivity be on the current generation because positive emotion helps us be more creative and more cognitively flexible and helps us with resilience, which also leads to great health and better relationships. [And it also gives me a better understanding of why I prefer the 1998 Hottest 100 to the songs of 2018!] See more

23.01.2022 Difficult conversations are one of my favourite topics to discuss at workshops and in coaching sessions. I enjoy helping people learn how to plan for tough conversations and I especially love hearing the success stories that follow. We worry that a difficult conversation will upset the other person or damage a relationship, but the outcome is often to improve or strengthen the relationship. There are some great tips for difficult conversations in this article, including the HUG principle: HEAR the other person. UNDERSTAND what they are trying to say, and GO forward together. What stops you having difficult conversations?

22.01.2022 One of the highlights of my job is reading the feedback I receive from clients at the end of each coaching program. I often talk to people about the 'gift of feedback' and that's exactly how I view it when I receive it. This message from a delightful young woman who came to coaching with the aim of building her self-confidence just put a smile on my face: "It was wonderful to have Julie as my coach, she made me feel a million times capable. Her charisma, flexibility especial...ly with schedules was amazing, thus leaving me on the other side of the phone line feeling like just not an item to be ticked off, but a treasure. I always looked forward to our sessions together. Thank you Julie". Can you put a smile on someone's face by providing positive feedback? As the attached article highlights, positive feedback is what motivates people to continue "doing what they’re doing well, and do it with more vigor, determination, and creativity". The skill of delivering negative feedback is essential, but remember that the optimal ratio is five positive for every negative! See more

20.01.2022 If (like me) you have a list of 100 books you want to read for leisure - plus the existing stack beside your bed and downloads on your Kindle - it can be hard to make time for books that will help with your professional development. So here’s a great solution: a list of 10 audiobooks that will change your career! I’ve read a quite a few of these and can also recommend Brene Brown’s audiobook 'The Power of Vulnerability' (her other audiobook is on the list). I’m going to download the others on my iPhone so I can listen when I’m travelling. If you know any of these or can make a further recommendation, please share your comments below!

18.01.2022 With uncertainty and disruption stretching into the foreseeable future, supporting our educators should be a top priority. But this great short article by the Grattan Institute outlines why teachers need more than just expressions of support. Having coached countless individual teachers and groups of educators over the past five years across many Australian states, the ‘four deep structural challenges facing the profession’ articulated here resonate deeply with me. https://www.sbs.com.au//cheaper-degrees-won-t-improve-teac

17.01.2022 Emotional Intelligence is what distinguishes the most successful leaders in the world. Here are three questions you can ask yourself if you want to build your emotional intelligence... in essence this involves (1) considering the areas for improvement others have identified, then (2) considering the goals you want to achieve, then (3) actively building habits in these areas. https://hbr-org.cdn.ampproject.org//boost-your-emotional-i

15.01.2022 This is a blog post I wrote for FlexCareers earlier in the week and they published it for Flexible Working Day. By sharing my own flexible working journey I hope others might see there is no one solution that fits everyone and your needs change over time. It is crucial employers understand this and work with their employees to make working flexibly a reality.

15.01.2022 Did you know that productivity can become an addiction, which by definition is not being able to stop doing something even when you want to. If you know a workaholic, you might like to send them this article. I love the idea of creating a ‘not-to-do list’ and I think everyone should make one of these! "The brain can become addicted to productivity just as it can to more familiar sources of addiction, such as drugs, gambling, eating or shopping... just like all addictions, over time a person needs more and more to be satisfied and then it starts to work against you. Withdrawal symptoms include increased anxiety, depression and fear. https://www.bbc.com//20200807-when-productivity-becomes-an

14.01.2022 In the "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" Steven Covey suggests checking your ladder is leaning against the right wall before you begin to climb. We need to continually reflect on where our ladder is leaning to ensure we are living a life we feel good about - a life we don't need to escape from.

14.01.2022 My latest blog for FlexCareers: why it's important to find your 'why' when you make a BIG career change and some tips on how to do this.

13.01.2022 I read this article for the first time a few years ago and it made sense. Having coached some amazing millennial leaders this year, the key points seem even more important. The final line in the article reads "I’ll give you everything I’ve got, but I need to know it makes a difference to something bigger than your bottom line." If you want to attract and retain millennial talent to your team, it's probably worth a read. If you are a millennial, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

13.01.2022 If #legacy is the idea of a life well lived and what you will leave future generations, what do you want your legacy to be? This article aims to get you thinking about the things you have done [or will do] to touch the lives of others. How do you want to be remembered?

13.01.2022 Out with the old [brand] and in with the new... thanks to Simone Linehan - artist for my beautiful new business cards!

12.01.2022 When choosing a coach, some people worry about the effectiveness of virtual coaching and wonder if it is a poor substitute for face-to-face coaching. This is a great article about why telephone coaching can sometimes be MORE effective than face-to-face (and there's research to support this!) Here's a recent testimonial from one of my telephone coaching clients: Julie was an engaged and involved coach. Even though I've never met her, the connection she forged via the phone ca...lls was impactful and key to my positive take outs from the experience. I had reservations about how bespoke 'remote' training could be, but these were quashed by the end of the first session. Throughout each one, she was able to accurately capture and reflect on my thoughts and our conversations, and use these to keep us on track and striving towards our shared focus. I never doubted that she wasn't as invested in the experience as I was. See more

11.01.2022 This is a great article, highlighting how managers think they’re coaching when they’re actually just telling people what to do. But the good news is that investing in the right training - like a short "Leader as Coach" program, which incorporates feedback from coaching experts - can markedly improve managers’ coaching skills.

10.01.2022 What a great story about the world's youngest national leader. "The injection of youth, energy and new bold ideas our stale politics desperately needs is personified by younger entrants who can connect with a whole new generation who are usually disillusioned and disengaged far too early."

08.01.2022 Some great suggestions about how to become a more positive person, although I don’t like the word instantly in the headline... As indicated in the first paragraph, optimism is like a muscle these things need to be practiced regularly over time if you want to have a more positive outlook and in turn, improve your wellbeing. Do you use any of these strategies?

07.01.2022 Have you heard of or practiced 'self-coaching'? A commitment to ongoing reflection and introspection (whether this is with a coach, on your own, or ideally a combination of both) is what creates deeper level insights that can lead you to make meaningful change in your life. A previous coaching client just sent me this article and said "Thank you so much for helping me ask the tough questions". If you don't have a coach who can ask you the tough questions, you might like to take a look at this list and give self-coaching a go. https://www.inc.com//50-tough-questions-you-never-ask-your

06.01.2022 Have you ever worried about needing to find your one true purpose in life? I love the idea presented in this article - that purpose is not something we can 'find', because it's not a destination or a fixed thing. Rather, it changes across our lifetime as we grapple with identity at different life stages. Exploring what matters to you most, knowing what kind of person you want to be and acting to become that person is what truly gives a sense of meaning to your life. #leadershipcoaching #purpose #valuesdriven

04.01.2022 In this post I explore how senior leaders set the tone and make it OK or not OK for staff to talk about issues relating to work and personal life. For leaders to change the status quo and make work-life balance a priority in their own organisations, they first have to shift their own mindset about what is possible. This process starts by giving themselves permission to put home and family first and learning to work differently [more flexibly] with others in the workplace.

03.01.2022 In this article Daniel Goleman reminds us that the very best leaders sense the emotional state of those they lead and work with and they do something with that information. The anecdote in the article about one leader’s ability to read the emotions in the room and then care enough to take action, is a beautiful example of emotional intelligence in action. In the past year we have seen some high-profile leaders do this naturally and repeatedly, while others have publicly demonstrated very low levels of EQ. The good news is that you can choose to grow your own emotional intelligence and you’re never too old to do this which is a great thing, because what the world needs right now is more compassionate leaders. https://www.linkedin.com//one-mindset-leaders-need-now-mo/
