13.01.2022 Welcome to the bee hotel, fondly dubbed the ‘Sunshine Hilton’. This man-made bee hotel has been constructed to encourage small native bees into Melbourne’s west...ern suburbs so they can pollinate the endangered Sunshine Diuris orchid. The holes have attracted the native Orange-browed Resin Bee, Megachila aurifons, and other related species that like to reside in bored holes whether naturally occurring or man-made. The sealed holes show where native bees are residing, and the grass filled holes are possibly housing wasps. The Sunshine Diuris only occurs in Victoria, and is listed as threatened under the Victorian Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988.When European settlers arrived it was so common in native grasslands in the north-west of Melbourne that it was often referred to as 'Snow-in-the-Paddocks'. The species decline is attributed to widespread habitat destruction and degradation. The Sunshine Diuris Recovery Program is run by DELWP with the help of the Australasian Native Orchid Society.
