05.01.2022 Top Tips for Reducing Water Use Everyday 1.Dishwasher or hand washing? Studies with efficient dishwashers show that the machine wins hands down for energy and water efficiency. Only use a dishwasher when it is full and don’t buy one if you are not going to use it regularly. 2.Gardening. Mulch regularly and deeply. Group plants based on their watering needs, to minimise unnecessary watering. Get to know your plants and how much water they really need. Plant drought tolerant pl...ants such as many Australian natives. 3.Operate dishwashers and clothes washers only when they are fully loaded. 4.Limit shower time to 4 minutes or less. 5.Check for leaks. You can determine if there are any leaks on your property by taking a water meter reading, then waiting (without using any water) for four hours before checking the meter again. If there is a change in the meter, you may have a leak. First check your toilet for leaks, then call the plumber if necessary. 6.Check your toilet for leaks. Put a few drops of food dye in the cistern, wait 15 minutes and then check the water in the bowl. If the food dye colour appears in the bowl you have a leak. 7.Scrape, don’t rinse: Pre-rinsing dishes before loading the dishwasher is unnecessary. Scrape off food and then trust that bad boy to do its job. 8.Keep a bucket in the kitchen to collect rinse water for fruit and vegies. This water can be used to water the garden. 9.Turn the shower off while you lather or wash your hair. Also consider putting a bucket in the shower to collect the water while the shower is getting warm. See more
