18.01.2022 For Russell Crowe's 'The Water Diviner' we were tasked with creating a realistic early prosthetic for a scarred war veteran. The opportunity to re-create something of this work was an honour. This kind of work provided thousands upon thousands of disfigured young men to refine their dignity when they returned back to society. The workshop shown in this picture belonged to Boston-born Anna Coleman Ladd. The first of its kind was actually the Masks for Facial Disfigurement De...partment (located in a London hospital), but soldiers called it the Tin Noses Shop. An incredible 21 million men were wounded during World War I, and many returned with crippling facial injuries. Although plastic surgery was advancing quicker than ever before, many men used prosthetic 'tin faces' to hide the scars that could not be removed. After working with wounded soldiers and the Red Cross, Anna set up her own studio in Paris, which became incredibly popular. The faces were handmade from copper and tin and applied to the patients face during painting so that it would blend in with their skin as perfectly as possible. The Tin Noses Shop had produced over 220 prosthetic masks by 1918. Ladd attempted to make her shop as cheery as possible to combat the trauma that the patients had already been throughthe ivy-covered garden was decorated with statues, the rooms were filled with flowers, and the walls were hung with flags. Soldiers were given chocolate, wine, and dominoes to occupy themselves. The well-loved shop set revolutionary standards of care for soldiers that were unlike anything they had seen before.

15.01.2022 With Russell Crowe's Directorial Debut 'The Water Diviner' released into cinemas we are now able to share some of our prosthetic work that we created for the film. One of the very graphic effects we created is getting the attention that Russell felt it would, but not in a garish way. It was one of those cinematic moments where the boldness of the prosthetic went hand in hand with helping to create and express the tone and mood of the seriousness of the situation. Nothing we c...reate could ever truly capture the horror of being in war. But we are very proud of what we created to help tell the story of the pain of war; regardless of which side you are on. Congratulations Russell, and thanks to the JMB team.
