24.01.2022 I’m weighing in herepart the way through, I’ve read a lot of the commentary here, online reviews, analysis and listened to the author on a number of podcasts @guardian @damianbarrliterarysalon and @bbcbooks I understand the arguments about #ownvoices and have heard the feedback that there may be mistakes in the book. Cummins said that the book came from a place of love and in good faith and I believe her. My initial gut instinct was to ask the question: do we have to live wh...at we write? And that’s what I ask nowI don’t think we do. Criticism creates debate but when it fosters division, anger and censorship then it has gone too far. The use of barbed wire at the launch was questionable but we don’t need to pulp the book. Cummins hopes to reach a wide audience with this book and indeed she will, and I applaud her for doing so. Oprah hasn’t chosen a Latinx writer for her Bookclub for 20 years but that is not of @jeaninecummins doingit’s Oprah’s. So read the book if you wish. If you don’t wish to read it then don’t. 17.01.2022 #Repost @jimblah I know that it’s First Nations Fam who are hurting the most right now, We have a far deeper connection to this Land, we have always treated it with the utmost respect & love for We are the Country, therefor we understand the complexities of living in harmony with it because we know We are one in the same. The invader doesn’t know the importance or reality of what that means, they just want to use it for their own enjoyment, never mind the cost.... We have had to endure a war that wages upon everything we hold dear, & make no mistake, these fires are a direct result from the same war that continues to be waged upon First Peoples of this Land & Country. We also have had to watch on as the world cries for Australia, but they don’t cry for Us the same way. Nope, that ‘great Australian spirit’ that we love to indulge in don’t extend to Us. We’d love to think it does, we’d love to think we gave it a good shot, but the reality is we so easily get on with our way of life, indulging in the privilege of living in the ‘luckiest country on earth’ because why would it be a high priority to have to look deep into the heart of our nation and see what’s really there. It ain’t pride. It’s shame. We all know the truth. It’s much easier this way. For the First Peoples of this Land, the apocalypse already been through these parts, we been seeing this destruction and devastation since 1788. When the world gonna cry about that? When all these celebrities gonna chip in their millions & shed a tear for us, when these politicians gonna right these wrongs we have had to endure for so long, when the media gonna level up and speak on the reality of the lies that need to be upheld in order to remain comfortable with living on stolen land, in order to remain comfortable regarding the benefits we inherit off the back of genocide, when is everybody going to utilise their privilege, space and energy to help to fight the flames that engulf the very Heart of this Land?
