21.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday Celebrating 30 Years of The Joan Did You Know? The Q Theatre experienced an extremely successful period between the mid-1970’s mid-1980’s by encouraging community engagement, making the theatre available for other organisations and activities, maintaining a low price policy and an energetic and engaging house-style of production. As a result, it achieved close to 94% capacity at its shows by 1980’s and in 1981, the decision was made to create a new thea...tre. Designed by the company itself, the new Q Theatre was made using the same site on Railway Street, Penrith. It was created with the shape and atmosphere of the existing Q Theatre, but with improved facilities, including modern seating, air conditioning and a bar. The theatre reopened on 17 November, 1982 with Brandon Thomas’ farce and crowd-pleaser Charley’s Aunt. Directed by Doreen Warburton, the company consisted of Amanda Affleck (Wardrobe), Colin Carr (Technician), Terence Collins (Technician), Trevor Connell (Photographer), Arthur Dicks (Designer), Peter Kingston (Assistant to the Director), Rae Kissick (Costume Coordinator), Peter Lennon (Technician), Jennie Muir (Assistant to the Designer), Anthony Papp (Lighting Designer/Stage Manager), George Petreav (Technician), Therese Richards (Costume Coordinator), Garry Search (Technician), Steven Sturgess (Assistant Stage Manager), Ian Young-Landel (Sound Designer) and Richard Wilkinson (FOH). The cast included Alan Brel (Lord Fancourt Babberley), Vanessa Downing (Amy Spettigue), Andrew Dungan (Jack Chesney), Ben Gabriel (Brassett), Laura Garbiel (Ela Delahay), Tony Ingersent (Sir Francis Chesney), Rhys McConnochie (Stephen Spettigue), Daniel Mitchell (Charles Wykehan), Mary-Lou Stewart (Kitty Verdun) and Jennifer West (Donna Lucia D’Alvadorez). The official opening ceremony on the new theatre took place on 9 April, 1983 and coincided with the company’s 20th Anniversary. 05.01.2022 #ThrowbackThursday Celebrating 30 Years of The Joan Did You Know? Q Theatre's 21st Birthday Season in 1984 concluded with a sell-out run of musical comedy Better Known as Bee written by Ian Dickson, David Mitchell and Peter Thornburn, with music by Tony Rees. Starring Jan Adele ("Number 96") in the title role, the play follows the life of Sydney eccentric, individualist and bohemian rebel Beatrice (Bea) Miles from her schooldays at Abbotsleigh School to her death in a co...nvent at Randwick. The production received rave reviews from the critics such as: an example of inspired castingshe [Jan Adele] brings to the role great sympathy and understanding, as well as a singing voice which is ideally suited to the catchy and amusing songs that pepper this show. The Sydney Morning Herald The Q have a dinky-di Aussie hit on their hands. SunHerald Directed by Doreen Warburton and Arthur Dicks (in addition to designing), the other cast members included Grant Smith, Sonja Tallis and Rob Thomas (later seen in the Q’s 1985 production of The Hostage).
