23.01.2022 The Greens know that it’s time to end the disproportionate incarceration rate of First Nations People, and we’re setting a target of doing this in the ACT by 2030. The Greens are taking the smarter approach to the criminal justice system, accelerating our nation-leading Justice Reinvestment commitments with a $20 million package for the next four years. Justice Reinvestment is a community-focussed, evidence-led approach that shifts funds away from building bigger prisons and... instead invests in vulnerable communities to address underlying causes of crime and keep our community safer, over the long term. Our Justice Reinvestment programs will work to bring Indigenous incarceration rates in line with non-Indigenous incarceration rates by 2030. 20.01.2022 Canberra has a bit of a gas problem! But no need to see a doctor; the Greens have the prescription to help us reach a clean, green gas-free future. Fossil-fuel gas contributes 22% of the ACT's greenhouse gas emissions, and is increasingly sourced from coal seam gas fracking.... We need to get off gas, and the ACT Greens have a plan to make it happen. While gas was used as a transition fuel over the past decade, now is the time to responsibly, but fairly rapidly, phase it out. With 100% renewable electricity now in the ACT we're in a great position to achieve this by 2040 - and the Greens have a sensible plan to get it underway. We need to stop building new buildings with gas connections: instead they can be all-electric and zero emissions, using solar, batteries, and smart designing. We also need to transition existing gas use over to electric alternatives. Our initiative contains a $20M fund to start helping residents and businesses make the switch to efficient electric alternatives as their gas appliances reach their end of life. Not only will this help tackle climate change, it will save on energy costs, and it will establish the ACT as the national leader in zero-emissions building and development. That's the kind of green industry we want in Canberra as we Build a Better Normal! Read more greens.org.au/act/get-o

15.01.2022 When building light rail to Woden why stop there? Why not include Phillip and tie into the Park & Ride at Mawson to unlock the benefits across southern Canberra? The ACT Greens think there is a strong case to be made for extending light rail to Mawson as part of Stage 2, with the goal of having light rail to Mawson commence operation at the same time or shortly after the opening of light rail from the City to Woden Town Centre.... 09.01.2022 Conservation Council says we should fast-track Canberra off gas. We Greens agree. Why encourage people to waste money, install gas appliances and connect suburbs to outdated polluting tech?
08.01.2022 Green team gearing up for a Macquarie doorknock. Thanks Fiona, Eddy and candidate Katt!
08.01.2022 The ACT Greens want Canberra to rival the world’s best cities for building quality development and ‘green’ infrastructure. We will ensure the ACT’s land release program includes at least one ‘showcase’ development per year that pilots a big step forward on development quality. Across the world, demand for climate-friendly commercial and residential developments like these are on the rise. These buildings have features like:... being covered by green ‘living’ walls and roofs to keep temperatures down, and counteract the ‘concrete jungle’ being highly energy efficient and cheaper to heat in cold winters and keep cool in hot summers. being clean and green, powered by 100% renewable electricity (rather than polluting fossil fuels, like so-called ‘natural’ gas) Because Canberra needs to be Building A Better Normal! 06.01.2022 Adolescence is a crucial period of life for building good mental health, resilience and problem solving skills. The ACT Greens have announced an $11.6 million child and youth mental health package. Providing services and support for this cohort must be a priority, particularly given the significant impact the COVID-19 pandemic is having on young people.... Key features of this package include a new ACT psychologist subsidy scheme and more support for children, young people, parents and families. 02.01.2022 Now, more than ever, our communities need places where they can come together, and sport is a critical part of that story. The ACT Greens want to create a city that encourages and facilitates as much community sport as possible. So we have a plan for:...
