24.01.2022 The science of mindfulness A recent 2019 study by the University of Texas found evidence-based mindfulness programs (of just 8 weeks duration) reduce stress & anxiety in college & nursing students. Commenting that a mindfulness practice reduces suffering due to conditions of pain, chronic illness, or psychological issues including stress & anxiety. Good nutrition & mindfulness based techniques can’t be underestimated with their benefits on our mood & gut health. How can y...ou practice mindfulness? Taking a moment to observe your breath, go out in nature, take mini breaks, write in a journal. Most of all be kind to yourself & don’t judge yourself for a wandering mind. Me in Canggu, Bali a few years ago after my mum passed away & I learned to surf for the first time, combined with yoga & meditation & meeting a group of amazing people I will never forget. 23.01.2022 Taking some time out even if my dog Peppa doesn’t have boundaries Today is @who World Mental Health Day This campaign offers opportunities for all of us to do something life-affirming: as individuals, to take concrete actions in support of our own mental health, and to support friends and family who are struggling; as employers, to take steps towards putting programmes in place for employee wellness; as governments, to commit to establishing or scaling-up mental health s...ervices; and as journalists, to tell the world what more can and must be done to make mental health a reality for everyone (WHO, 2020). Perhaps you could do one thing such as check in on a friend, neighbour or family member, go for a walk, meditate, do some yoga, cuddle a pet, get out in nature, take a deep breath, eat a healthy meal. Simple tools that aren’t complicated but can make such a difference to our lives and those around us See more

22.01.2022 Every 40 seconds someone loses their life to suicide. Today is World Mental Health Day. Mental health is an area I am very passionate about after seeing many of my military colleagues suffer & through experiencing grief & trauma in my own personal life. Together, we can save lives & shine a light on mental health. The World Health Organisation has some ideas to help: If you’re struggling, take 40 seconds to kickstart a conversation with someone you trust If you know someone who’s struggling reach out & let them know you care #WorldMentalHealthDay #40seconds #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #mindfulness #PTSD #military #veteran #firstresponders #seebeyondthestigma #mentalhealthmatters #everymindmatters

19.01.2022 This is a good article - simply cutting out as many processed & packaged foods as possible when you shop (although they do package a lot of fresh food, which is very frustrating!) Results in a fast track to eating better and maintaining a healthy body weight. If we all ate less processed foods we would benefit both our own health & the environment - a valuable tool we can teach our kids, setting up good habits for life!

19.01.2022 Should you be taking a protein powder supplement? I've started adding 5 minute read articles to my website of the most common questions I'm asked from patients. As always any information I provide is evidence-based. ... I will be covering intermittent fasting next week which is something I have personally practiced for the last 5 years. If you have a topic you would like me to cover please let me know in the comments below. https://www.jodiallennutrition.com/what-to-look-for-in-a-p/

17.01.2022 I found maintaining my fitness throughout COVID challenging, it definitely affected my mood, energy and concentration. Most days I managed a walk with my dog but I missed the feeling of lifting weights in the gym. I love this short TED Talk with neuroscientist Wendy Suzuki explaining the benefits of exercise on the brain. In every client plan, I prescribe exercise in conjunction with nutrition, ensuring that the movement of choice is what the client enjoys and will continue to do. I’m off to the gym for the first time in a few months & I can’t wait!

15.01.2022 We are in crazy and challenging times. It's difficult to ignore the uncertainty we're currently facing with COVID-19 and the constant media attention and conflicting information. 09.01.2022 I'm so passionate about nutritional psychiatry and the FOOD + MOOD connection! I'm fortunate with my work that I get to regularly talk about how our diet and mental health are deeply interconnected. This FREE course from Deakin University and the Food & Mood Centre helps to explore the relationship between nutrition and brain health, why it matters, and how to work towards positive food changes.

08.01.2022 Is skipping breakfast really that bad for you? It depends...if you’re skipping breakfast & not eating well for the rest of the day with eating processed foods, too many carbs & not enough protein & healthy fats, you’re not realising the full potential of intermittent fasting (IF). Fasting is not suitable for everyone, especially for pregnant & breastfeeding mothers, children, those with eating disorders or uncontrolled diabetes.... IF does increase your stress hormone cortisol, so if you have hormonal issues, you’re not eating well, have poor sleep & chronic stress, intermittent fasting may only add to your stress & inhibit weight loss. I’ve seen some great results of IF in clinic. But only if we can get some of these lifestyle stressors under control first then we’ll give it a try. In the end it’s important to listen to your body & do what’s right for you. I’ve cycled in & out of intermittent fasting for the last 5 years when I’m feeling good, but if I’m really hungry I’ll eat! Has fasting worked for you? How has it not? This is a prospective cohort study. Frequency of eating breakfast was compared to cardiovascular and all-cause mortality risk. https://www.naturalmedicinejournal.com//skipping-breakfast

03.01.2022 What happened to paleo? Now it’s all about the ketogenic diet. I get asked about this almost daily and have seen many popular paleo advocates now switching to keto. This is a well written article if you are as confused as everyone else! At the end of the day the most important thing to remember is ‘personalised nutrition’ it should be whatever diet suits YOU.

02.01.2022 Great quick read on the benefits of fasting! Andreas Michalsen is a professor at Berlin’s Charite University Medical Centre & advocates at least a 14 hour fast & the majority of calories consumed at lunch. This is just one effective method of fasting. If you can’t read the entire article send me a DM & I will send it to you.
