25.01.2022 We’re live and "Talking to Kids About Racism w/Beverly Daniel Tatum #RaisingEquity #DrKira #Racism #DrBeverlyTatum

24.01.2022 Great list of books to help with anti-racism and has both books for kids and adults. Has anyone seen a similar list based on the race issues in other countries? Last night I saw a suggestion for an Australian perspective: Talkin Up to the White Woman. Indigenous Women and Feminism by Aileen Moreton-Robinson. ... I’ve recently bought on preorder Finding our heart by Thomas Mayor which is about the Uluru statement for kids. I’ve also noticed that I’ve been trying to borrow books at the library that have diversity and while there are more options with BIPOC and disability, there still aren’t many. I haven’t said anything to the library! Will put in a request for more diverse books.

24.01.2022 Kiddo, I'm being SUPER REASONABLE, what is it that you need before you can start listening??? Check out this blog from last year on the three reasons your kids aren't listening. https://youtu.be/BEHD-Vk-dkE

23.01.2022 When your kids are overreacting, help them get really clear what is important to them and why. So often, that's all they need to be able to see for themselves that asking for a hug will work better than saying no to every freaking thing you ask them to do. Not always, but often

23.01.2022 This morning Suzanne Culberg interviewed me over on her page and it was awesome!! We talked about: - the badge of honour for parenting being HARD and how to let that go - handling the kids being disrespectful and whining... - dealing with having a different parenting style to your partner - how to apologise meaningfully when we get to the end of our tether We could have talked ALL DAY!!! (and sometimes do HAHA) PS watch my heart skip a beat when she calls me one of her best friends. We have the most amazing friendship and I'm so grateful to have her in my life!

22.01.2022 Is your kiddo in love with the word no? If you're wanting to be able to talk to them in a way that inspires teamwork come along to my next webinar - Dealing with Defiance. I'll also give you the simple way to defuse the power struggle when they stay defiant anyway.... jodiethornton.com/defiance

22.01.2022 Kids lying about eating their veggies and then hiding them?? Let's talk about what to do about this question from Sandi

21.01.2022 Why do the tantrums not ease up when you give them what they want? Much to the parent-judging-brigade's dismay, it's not that we're making them less resilient so they just demand more and more. It's because what they're asking for is not what they really need. ... So until we get in under the real reason for the tantrum, we're not going to see the tantrums happen less often. What are your kids tantrumming about and what is your guess as to what the real need is?

21.01.2022 Are your kids having BIG feelings about not getting their way? Would you like to be able to validate their feelings without encouraging the tiny tyrant vibe? Grab a session with me for $197 and I'll help you the tools and awareness to handle this EASILY.... You'll be able to support your kids to focus on being a team AND help them deal with disappointment when they can't have what they want. Comment below or PM me to book your session.

19.01.2022 Being productive in the day is getting HARDER for me. The kids are doing great, it's not so much the interruptions. Maybe it's the monotony?... The days all roll into one, no variation of the weekend. Could be that there aren't as many "have to's" on a deadline - packing lunches, getting out the door on time.... Whatever it is, I keep telling myself I'll be able to work when they're in bed. But it never works! My nervous system is definitely exhausted. Decision fatigue? Delayed stress response now that we're in single-figures for cases nationally? Or am I running out of puff on the home stretch now that Alyssa is back in school next Monday? Whatever it is #notfightingit This is me. Saying no. Time to go veg out. How are things for you?

18.01.2022 If you know the tantrum isn't really about the colour of the cup how do you figure out what it IS about? In my next webinar I'll show you how to interpret your kids' behaviour and find out what the real cause of their tantrums is. Register at jodiethornton.activehosted.com/f/70

18.01.2022 Join me for this talk by Kelly from One Awesome Woman tomorrow at 10am. It’s run by our local Canberra Business Mums but is online and open to anyone. Kelly will be talking about complex families and business and she’s such good value that I’m really looking forward to it.

15.01.2022 Sometimes the tantrums happen when we just have nothing left to give. What then? Let's talk about what to do when you just can't. ... My webinar next week on Finding the REAL Cause of Tantrums will help for when you DO have the energy jodiethornton.activehosted.com/f/70

13.01.2022 Do your kids behave like angels for everyone else and let their big feelings out just for you? That can be so draining. Unless... you know how to help them understand the feelings and move through them. ... At tomorrow's webinar I'll be showing you the simple steps to holding space for your kids in a way that they can get clear on what they need. No more 45 minute tantrums, no more walking on eggshells to avoid drama and no more covering your ears to deal with the whingey voice. Register here and let me know if you'll be joining live. jodiethornton.com/feelings

11.01.2022 Once your kids have built up their emotional skills, your job gets SO MUCH EASIER. My favourite story about this is when Alyssa was 2. At the time, Sarah mostly napped in my arms and on this rare day I had managed to get her down in her cot. ... I really REALLY needed to do the dishes. Not because the world would end. But because I just wanted to have finished something. ANYTHING. You know how it is when you have a toddler and a bub! So I start the dishes and Alyssa starts banging something on the coffee table. I don't know what it was, but it wasn't precious. And our coffee table was so terrible it really needed to have gone to coffee table heaven already. But the noise. I couldn't do the dishes with that racket. And I NEEEEDED to do the dishes. "Alyssa can you stop the banging? It's hurting my ears". "No mummy, you get headphones". Did the TWO AND A HALF YEAR OLD just solve the problem better than I did? Why yes, yes. She. Did. And that's where these skills start to pay off. She didn't say no just because. She didn't have a tantrum at my asking her to do something. She didn't acquiesce to me and feel crappy about not getting what she wanted. She knew it was important to both of us to get what we wanted. So she found a way. It's totally worth getting them started on emotional awareness - even when they're tiny! This is how small they were at about that time

06.01.2022 Are you judging yourself for not staying calm through your kids' big feelings? All the strategies we're told to use to keep calm... taking deep breaths, meditation, filling your own cup.... They help you to not overreact.... They do NOT help you to know what to do to support your children in their feelings. Seriously. We're told our kids need us to be calm. What they really need is the skills to understand and respond to their own feelings. You are WIRED to know that they need something they're not getting. Staying calm while they need something and you don't know how to help is just not real. You can't numb yourself enough to be ok with that. And all the time you spend trying to stay calm is time you're not spending teaching them the emotional awareness skills they need. You WILL be calm when you know what to do. If you'd like to learn how to teach your kids the emotional skills they need, I have a short term offer to help. Reach out and let's make life easier for you and for them.

01.01.2022 When we are brave enough to share the parts of our parenting that we're not proud of it's really important that our vulnerability is not met with judgment or shame. Here's how to tell if your parenting support is likely to have judgment of you.
