24.01.2022 10 years, looking back to 2018. Often, its only one or two degrees of separation between us and someone we know or love who has been impacted by or lost to bowel cancer. In 2018 we launched the Degrees of Separation Campaign to urge everyone from age of 50 to take their free screening test when it arrives in the mail.... The message is simple - TAKE THE TIME, TAKE THE TEST. IT MIGHT JUST SAVE YOUR LIFE. #JLF10years

23.01.2022 The average Australian walks 7400 steps a day. Is it time to step up? Regular walking produces many health benefits, including reducing our risk of heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes and depression. Best of all, its free, we can do it anywhere and for most of us its relatively easy to fit into our daily routines.... We often hear 10,000 as the golden number of steps to strive for in a day. But do we really need to take 10,000 steps a day? Head to our website to read the full article written by Corneel Vandelanotte, republished by The Conversation https://jodileefoundation.org.au/do-we-really-need-to-take/

Bowel cancer often shows no symptoms until it is too late, which is why taking the screening test is vital for early detection. If you are over 50, take the time to take the test. It might just save your life!

17.01.2022 The Jodi Lee Foundation Workplace Program has been delivered to countless organisations across Australia - and thankfully Emily's workplace was one of them. After hearing Jodi Lee Foundation Founder and Chair, Nick Lee speak on the importance of bowel cancer early detection and prevention and sharing his experience of losing his wife Jodi to bowel cancer before her 42nd birthday, Emily, aged 21, decided to take the test provided to her by her workplace. "As a 21 year old, I ...suppose I was skeptical about the need for me to take the test. Sure, I had heard about screening for bowel cancer, but it was only something that your parents had to do, right? After hearing Nick speak about Jodi, it made me think I should do it just in case." Emily was surprised when her test came back positive for blood in her stool. Not long after receiving her test results, Emily had several polyps removed. Some of which, if left, would have progressed to a cancerous stage. "Just because you’re young doesn’t mean you can’t get bowel cancer. I’m one of the youngest in my workplace. There is no way, but for Nick coming to talk to us, that I would have ever have taken the test. I’m very lucky." The point that I really want to stress to people is that if you get onto it early, it could save your life." To read about Emily’s experience, and others like her, head to the 'Our Stories' page on our website: https://jodileefoundation.org.au/stories/emilys-story/ To enquire further on how you can help prevent bowel cancer in your workplace contact us at [email protected]

13.01.2022 Our board member and gastroenterologist, Dr Dan Worthley was one of five experts asked by @ConversationEDU how often should we be making a trip to the toilet. Here is Dan's response: In a recent large study of 4,775 people reporting normal bowel patterns, it was found that about 95% of people move their bowels between three and 21 times weekly. So, between three times a day and three times a week is what I like to call the Goldilocks zone for pooing". But just as importan...t as frequency, is form. To describe our stool consistency, we use the Bristol Stool Form Scale which uses a seven-point scale ranging from Type 1 separate hard lumps, like nuts to Type 7 watery no solid pieces. Type 4 (Like a sausage or snake, smooth and soft) is the Nirvana of all bowel actions, but 50% of normal patients report some variation from this. Read more on our website: https://jodileefoundation.org.au/do-we-have-to-poop-every-/ If you notice a change in bowel habits for more than two weeks, speak to your GP.

12.01.2022 Samantha Herbut will host a JLF Mother's Day Brunch this May to help raise funds and awareness for the second most common cause of cancer-related death in Australia and to honour her mum Billie, who sadly passed away from bowel cancer in 2017. Since my mum’s passing, I always find this time difficult, especially given it is also a few days before her birthday. By being part of this initiative and raising awareness, it helps to heal old wounds and take time to honour my mum. ...It makes me feel like I am doing something I know she would be proud of said Samantha. The JLF Mother’s Day Brunch also aims to raise awareness around ways people can prevent bowel cancer by opening up conversations about the importance of being healthy and active, taking a screening test, acting on symptoms and also exploring your family history. Now with a family history, my sister and I have been tested. The rule of thumb is to be tested 10 years prior to your relatives’ first diagnosis. My sister found several polyps at the age of 31, said Samantha. During her time battling bowel cancer, my mum became such an advocate for testing and the importance of not delaying a test - my mum actually delayed her testing by four years. Overall, I really admire how positive and strong she was throughout the last four years of her life and I know she would be proud that today, I am helping others raise awareness for the prevention and early detection of bowel cancer. Look after yourself, be aware and don't delay taking the test - it may just save your life." 09.01.2022 The story behind our friendship with Food Processing Equipment Pty Ltd and why early detection is so important.

08.01.2022 10 years, looking back. In Australia, the majority of young people dont move enough each day. Which isnt great, because physical activity is really important for overall health, and reduces the risk of developing certain diseases including bowel cancer. Designed to combat the trend of sedentary behaviour in young people, our Kay-A-Day initiative encouraged school students to run or walk a kilometer a day for 21 days, the distance of a half marathon. Friends and family got... involved too by doing their kay-a-day or sponsoring the children. Our Kay-A-Day ambassadors Tom Jonas, Rebecca Morse, Scott Thompson and Jess Trengove visited schools to run a kay with students and talk about the importance of physical activity. Kay-A-Day launched in 2015 with 2,300 students taking part which grew to 6,000 the following year and our health messages reaching 1 million people across Australia. #JLF10years

08.01.2022 We are saddened by the news that actor Chadwick Boseman passed away earlier this week, aged only 43. Chadwick was first diagnosed in 2016 with stage III bowel cancer. It's so important know the symptoms of bowel cancer and act quickly by visiting your GP if you think something might not be right because detected early, 99% of bowel cancers can be successfully treated. Unfortunately, bowel cancer often presents with no symptoms at all, but watch out for irregular bowel mo...vements, blood in your stool, abdominal pain, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, lack of energy, tiredness or fatigue. There is a symptom checker on our website to help you decide if you should make an appointment with your GP if in doubt, check it out. https://jodileefoundation.org.au/symptoms/

Many AFL greats got behind the #iknowsome1 campaign such as Stephen Kernahan, Marc Murphy, Ken Hunter, Craig Bradley, Andy McKay, Gavin Wanganeen, and Dermott Brereton. #JLF10YEARS
