25.01.2022 Pheobe Tosolini Pheobe Tosolini is an impassioned Sunday painter who brings a variety of learning to her portraiture and still life in oils. At various institutions since the late seventies she has studied printmaking, photography, drawing and graphic design. Pheobe gained an Advanced Diploma of Visual Art in 2001 from Adelaide Central School of Art. Her portraits are intimate and sentimental. Her still life works are jig-saws of formal shapes. Geometric abstraction underlies her compositions and assists her to balance juxtaposed patterns and forms. Pheobe is interested in conversations about the power structures, responsibilities and emotional struggles of domestic life.

20.01.2022 Maureen Finck I paint mostly in oil, but occasionally use acrylic paints. Landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, flower paintings and abstract paintings are included in my repertoire. My inspiration comes from whatever is around me. A regular bush walker, I’m constantly inspired to paint our native trees and flowers. If I’m given a bunch of flowers, I paint it. Since joining Joe Felber’s studio I have been concentrating on developing my art practice to include abstract painting. ...I paint because I love to. Taking delight in seeing what emerges from the canvas, I adore colour. Art can be a solitary occupation, so painting in a studio with other artists is a special time to spend time with other artists, being inspired and learning from their work. During different stages of life I have had more or less time for painting. Now is one special time in my life when I can devote lots of time to painting.

19.01.2022 Mary Jacquier Dabbling is something I do a lot! These works are an example of my work using a variety of media e.g., watercolour and pen, acrylic and oil paint. I have enjoyed experimenting with them. I have been a student of Joe’s for approximately 18 months. I like the way he encourages me to try new things, exposes me to the work of various artists, and resists the temptation of telling me what to do. As frustrating as this can be at times, his teaching methods have been an enormous help to me as I begin to explore a variety of techniques and media and to develop the confidence to try things on my own. It is fun.

18.01.2022 John Dow John Dow was born in Adelaide and has been drawing and painting since childhood, which has developed into a lifelong interest in visual art as a participant and observer. He has studied art at the Adelaide Central School of Art under the tutelage of Sophie Dunlop; at BAPEA Art School with principal lecturer Peter Bok, and currently attends the Josef Felber Art School. His art practice focuses primarily on still life painting in oil. Working with Joe has challenged ...John to develop his practice, focussing on the ‘biology’ of the objects he paints and a gestural approach to painting. John’s work reproduces familiar everyday objects: an empty preserving jar; fellow artist Pheobe’s cup resting on a table in the studio; left-over chocolate cake from afternoon tea. Sometimes interrupting the image and sometimes becoming part of the composition, the plywood support is revealed where masking tape has been applied and removed at stages during the painting process.

16.01.2022 Different Encounters is a showcase of the works of my students. Some of them were with me for over a year and it’s truly of great joy to see their works together. More importantly, I had the privilege to witness them learning and sharing with each other their different experiences. I believe everyone has a creative desire and its up to us to discover the passion to paint, draw or sculpt. Each student comes for 3 hours every week. They bring with them their own paintings wh...ich I then make suggestions and direct them in ways they can progress to achieve their goal. Everyone is welcome to see the works! #joefelberartschool #inthistogether #artneverdies

14.01.2022 Maggie Cecchin artist After a career as a health professional and academic my life changed when I discovered the joy of painting and made the decision to make art my future. While significantly self-taught I have studied at Adelaide Central School of Art, through the Museum of Modern Art, New York and taken Master Classes with/been mentored by Australian artists. I enjoy the materiality of paint and the relationship between paint and surface. I paint relationships relation...ships of materials, colour, shade, texture, line and shape. Such relationships reflect the complexity and interplay of life the way two or more things relate and effect each other. I explore these in my paintings which express the concepts of diversity and connectedness. In seeking authenticity, I draw from my tactile sensibility, love of simple form and use a minimalist vocabulary. My art is not complete until it is experienced by the viewer. I aim to create art that will engage and evoke viewers to linger, explore and experience the work. I would like to express my appreciation to Joe Felber for his mentorship in preparing my current series of works. See more

09.01.2022 Lyn Barnett artist ‘Lyn Barnett commenced painting in January 2019 when she did a two day workshop with Joe Felber as a holiday activity. She has continued to study with Joe ever since. With a background in human movement Lyn particularly enjoys painting the human form in action. Lyn says that as a ‘life long doodler’ it’s been rewarding to see what she can achieve under Joe’s tuition.’

09.01.2022 Lea Hallett The love of art and meaning has always been present and referential for me; meaning being Creation, born of the rational and soulful, bound together through blood ties. Life patterns, threads of faith and growth are identifiable in an obscure way within my work. My art practice is built on an outworking that hinges on textiles, photography, fashion and drawing. I use interdisciplinary media with a strong emphasis on representing a unique worldview, perspectives and transparent layers of the human soul. Lea holds a Degree in Fine Art from Curtin University, a Diploma of Fashion from Randwick Tafe, Sydney, and is currently completing a Degree in Creative Art at Flinders University.

08.01.2022 Diana Venturini Diana’s painting is an appropriation of Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe by Édouard Manet in four different approaches. The first example is an impression in the tradition of Manet. Two others are based on modern abstractions such as cubism and fauvism, and with her extraordinary sense for colours that makes her work so musical, gives the audience a contemplation of Manet’s famous art work. The last one is a small sketch that reveals the spontaneous craftsmanship evident in her paintings. Diana was taught for several years by Adelaide renowned art teacher Peter Bock, developing highly proficient skills in drawing and painting.

05.01.2022 Swati Sharma Swati is a self-taught artist from India, now living and settled in Adelaide. Swati has also exhibited her work in India. Her art explores deeper connections of our minds, souls, subconscious, journeys, emotions and life. She is motivated by moments; her art is a demonstration of what is, yet reflecting the potential of what could be. She says: ‘We are all different, but we are all one. My art explores our conversations with the subconscious and exploration of higher being.’ She likes impasto and thick layers of colours as they reflect the multi-dimensional nature of humanity. She works with oil, acrylic and mixed mediums on canvas, cloth, paper, producing abstract and impressionistic works. She loves to explore and hence it is easy to find variety in her paintings ranging in depth, mediums and styles.

04.01.2022 Adrienne Cullity artist Adrienne is a primary music specialist and piano teacher who is increasingly drawn to exploring expressiveness of other art forms. She takes pipe organ, singing and violin lessons and has participated in short courses at the Central Art School. Her paintings express her love and appreciation of nature, creation and creativity. For Eugene - This painting is about responses to awe inspiring landscape. The vibrant and bold Australian colours, hues o...f red, orange, purple and blue represent the feelings of 2 young Australians travelling in a vast, majestic and overpowering landscape of Norway. Farbenlandshaft - Colour Landscape. This is about co-existing and acknowledging creative solutions in seamlessly merging natural landscape and human habitat. It’s influenced by the work of Paul Klee. Calm - This painting, inspired by the ocean, came about as an expression of space, gentleness, peace and measured rhythm in the increasing manic, mechanised madness of the modern world. It’s about simplicity and minimalism - a back to basics, less is more antidote and attitude. See more

03.01.2022 ‘Different Encounters’ is Joe Felber’s students’ SALA showcase. To Joe, each student’s skills and experiences makes each artwork special. Because of his extensive experience in many forms of contemporary and traditional fine arts, students have the freedom to work with a wide range of disciplines and with a wide range of media. In small classes he offers suggestions and choices for the direction of work, using his extensive library to illustrate how major artists have worked in a similar fashion. Often Joe’s role is to ask questions, to encourage people to find their own solutions, and this is where his knowledge of the cutting edge of contemporary art is most helpful. He has also been offering mentorship to final year and post-graduate students.
