24.01.2022 Lots of registrations in so lots of people looking at the 5 topics and making their choice. The topics are designed to give you direction but still plenty of scope on what you may write. Select a topic that immediately gets your attention and one that fits well with you industry experience. It is always easier to be creative when you have existing experience. To help, below is some ideas on Topic-1. Talent is you! The people who make the industry "world" go round. No surpris...e there. But the questions is asking for your ideas on how we attract people to the retail game, taking them away from the other options they may have. Identify, from your own experience, the things that made you decide to enter this industry. Think about the skills the industry employers will be looking for and how you find those skills. Take a look at the future and consider what skills and talents may be needed in 10-15 years time. Can we attract those talents? Take a stand put your views forward and provide the HR-People and Culture teams with some new ideas. Where do we go to find talent, how do we engage them in the value of this industry? If you need help to get started there are plenty of people ready to help.

We are pleased to welcome back to Aus 2013 winner Graham who we will ask to write a little detail on how the Joe Berry Award influenced his career path. Needless to say that Graham has received a great deal of recognition for his win both at home and overseas. We would also like to remind you that the Award program includes the Trading Partners... Forum Scholarship, (backed by the AFGC) which sends one person each year to the International Future Leaders Forum. Jessica Wozniak has just returned from Boston where she attended this years forum. We will also be asking Jessica to tell us about the trip. The Scholarship is part of the Joe Berry Essay judging and we look for people who show great interest in leadership when assessing the finalists. So you get two chances - Joe Berry Award and Trading Partners Scholarship! Make sure you have registered for the Award so that we can provide you with great support from start to finish. It is all about Recognition. Keith
19.01.2022 One month down, three to go before closing. There has been some keen activity on the Joe Berry Award in the past week or so with several companies putting on seminars to inspire and assist entrants. Nielsen has run an online group session, Simplot an employee in-house program and Coca Cola invited their own team plus other intending entrants from other companies. A wonderfully arranged afternoon put on by Jon Stokes, a former finalist in the JBA. Thanks Jon. (see pic) We have... also had a number of people seeking advice on the topics or assistance with their "getting started" efforts. We have actually had one essay submitted already, a great effort by the writer to get this done early. Still plenty of time but you should be clear by now on your chosen topic and at least mentally preparing your arguments. Choose a topic that is within your area of knowledge but one that also tests your current expertise. Researching a new idea can be educational and rewarding. Dont hesitate to seek assistance! 19.01.2022 Hello Everyone, It has been awhile since we outlined the Topics for the 2020 Award. No doubt most of you are well underway with your essays and looking at how you can make your work unique and notable. One of the main things to remember is to keep your writing on-track and within a reasonably narrow focus. It is fine to bring in wider concepts or comments but dont let them divert you from your direction. We have had a number of draft essays come in for assistance, we are h...appy to take many more. With 5-weeks left till the closing date (Feb 28th) plenty of time to give you some momentum. No matter whether you are at first outline or final draft we are ready to provide advice. We are hoping a large number of those registered will make submissions and take advantage of the career exposure that we can deliver. Ask for assistance, give yourself the best chance! Keith See more

17.01.2022 Joe Berry Award 2020 - Topic 5 poses the question of whether the reality of sustainability and environment has been corrupted by companies who seek to monetize global warming. It is a topic which may be divisive depending on your own outlook on climate but it is important that you keep the focus on what is happening from an industry perspective. A little less of the big-picture and more of a focus within. The topic seeks to find relationship between the two sides of the indus...try and to find ways that cooperation can provide much stronger results. There are many documented reports on innovation by individual companies, (E.g. Coca Cola using recycled plastic for bottles), but still few that have genuine partnership. This is an area where you could start your writing by explaining examples where cooperation has been used (can be used) and where this can be expanded. Sustainability is well and truly part of most companies strategy and will continue to be a mainstream conversation. Potentially sustainability will become a bigger part of trading terms and this will produce both consternation and necessary cooperation for long-term success. Sustainability may be too costly for some players and become part of the rationalization of the industry. It could also be a new pathway to a trading relationship when one of the parties provides innovation that helps them both. As for the monetizing, there will be some cloudiness on this issue where governments and non-industry players have great influence. Look for the ways that monetizing will hinder sustainability and make a forecast on what needs to be done. As always, we are happy to give advice and to help you get started. [email protected]

14.01.2022 We had a long but intriguing time yesterday watching presentation from six talented young executives, as they contested the 2020 and 34th Joe Berry Award. With Zoom as our platform we shared screen with 25 executives who made up the judging panel for the day. Led by Bernie Brookes AM the panel watched presentations on Diversity, Market Stranglehold, Automation and Sustainability before taking a breath and adding up their scores. The final number presented Patricio Servat (Cro...ssmark Sydney) with the Joe Berry Award. Congratulations on your excellent presentation. You have a very big year ahead of you. Patricio will be going overseas when possible for a retail industry study tour and introductions to industry leaders in other countries. At the same time, as an extension of the Joe Berry Award, the AFGC was judging the Trading Partners Forum Scholarship. In their Zoom panel they watched presentations from four young executives before announcing Anna Marscham (Woolworths Sydney) as the winner. We express our admiration for the work put in by the finalists and the 30 other people who submitted essay entries for the Award. What ever the result, you have been shown as employees worth having. Get ready for November 1st, when Joe Berry 35 begins. (Photos in our next posting)
14.01.2022 Time to have a close look at Joe Berry Award Topic 3. When we look at diversity we often move immediately to cultural considerations but diversity for retail has many facets. There is no doubt that the population mix is having a distinct affect on retail decisions from what direction our innovations should head to how much shelf space an international product should receive. The topic ask that you consider shopper diversity and how it is influencing the Australian market. F...irst step; what is shopper diversity? Again, you have many ways to approach this question. Are we looking at generational diversity, gender diversity, online/offline diversity, cultural diversity or others not yet at the front line. For you the best approach is to consider where the strategic decisions are being most influenced by shopper diversity and find a debate that will raise the interest of the essay markers. For the strategic overpowering the topic allows you clear air. You can pose debate from a position where you are involved in strategic planning or you can forecast the strategic elements that should be considered and promote concepts that will capture diversity. The retail market is dynamic from the raw material supplier to the shop floor with trends that come and stay and others that come and go. A strong diversity suggestion on future strategy might be a winning concept. Dont bog down in current conversation, look to a market two years ahead and pose the argument on what shopper diversity has strategically changed. As always, help is available. Just ask! 12.01.2022 Well we have successfully judged and presented the 33rd Joe Berry Award last Thursday. The final act was for the judges to sit through the six presentations so that they could form a judgment on the best of the group. The group consisted of Jo Horsler (Nielsen) and Alexey Mironov (IRI Worldwide) presenting on The Future of Brands and Laila Khalid (Goodman Fielder), Sarah King (Woolworths), Alec Renehan (Coles) and Kate Wright (Campbell Arnotts). The Judging Panel chaired by B...ernie Brookes AM, consisted of 24 senior executives from across the industry. They had given up a full day out of their busy schedules to assess the presentations and to gain knowledge through the research and presentation skills of the finalists. The judging morphed into the Presentation Dinner at the Sofitel Wentworth in Sydney City where all six of the finalists were presented, by video, and interviewed by one of the judges. This allowed the audience to get to know the finalists better and maybe to place a little wager on who might win. During the evening, MCd by 2016 Winner Clementine Churchill, we were entertained by Esra Ozege who told of the highlights of her year as the incumbent Joe Berry winner including her travels to the USA . Trudy McDonald CEO TalentCode was the guest speaker who wove an inspiring mix of her own career path and the lessons she has learned from being an advisor to the top end of industry. Both were excellent contributor to the event. Finally, in his usual delaying tactics way, Bernie Brookes announced the winner to be Alec Renehan, Sustainability Manager, Coles as the 33rd Joe Berry Award Winner. Alec who has entered several times was backed by his Coles colleagues and warmly welcomed into the Joe Berry Alumni by many of the former winners. Over the next 12-months Alec will be on a journey of study tours, guest speaker roles and participant in industry event. Congratulations Alec. Also, on the evening through the work of the AFGC team the winner of the Trading Partner Forum Scholarship was announced. This award, for the first time, was decided by a separate panel of judges who comprised previous Scholarship winners under the guidance of Rob Giles, Sales Director SPC. The Winner, Jessica Wozniak, Campbell Arnotts will attend the 2019 Consumer Forum Future Leaders program in Boston USA. Congratulations Jess. Joe Berry 2020 opens on November 1st this year with pre-registration from September 30th. See more

08.01.2022 Time to take a look at Topic-2 for 2020. If you are writing on this topic, Automation and Operational Change, you need to take a wider view of where the influence will be felt the most. Does automation just act as an update for the bricks and mortar stores and therefore benefit online retail to a greater degree? Maybe you see the opposite effect where the clever introduction of automation can move right down to the shop floor and provide a greater experience for the consumer.... Is it a manufacturers ace to be played when they can make significant gains in quality and speed of production? Whichever way you approach the topic, you should find the change that you see most likely to improve rather than disrupt the supply chain, then make statements on its value. The first thing to do though is to identify what you believe describes "automation" as you see it. This helps the reader to understand your premise and to follow you process of debate. Automation has been happening since the gumball machine but the complexity of todays automation can be more confusing than we want. Is automation a fad or is it really the best way to improve retention of customers and lifting of profitability? Whatever you write be sure to make some definitive statements and be prepared to go outside todays known industry changes and make a forecast of the future of automation. Help is available, just ask!
07.01.2022 We hope that you are all enjoying the podcast series, more to come. If you have a question post it online, we are happy to respond. Joe Berry opens on November 1st 2020.
07.01.2022 A note on the Joe Berry Award; The current Covid-19 issues affecting the community have also caught up with the Award and we will defer our annual presentation dinner to a later and safer date. However, the essay judging, currently underway will continue and we will, by the end of April, know who our finalists will be. So if you have an essay in the system everything is still go!... The final judging may have a major overhaul and we are considering Video-Conferencing or Lecture Theatre style presentations. Once we have this locked down we will provide full advice to all the entrants and to all of the judging panel members. What is most important is that this unique and prestigious Award continues through its 34th year and on to the 35th. We will keep you informed.

05.01.2022 Happy New Year everyone! Like all of us no doubt you will be looking forward to a better year ahead. We should though be aware of the experience 2020 provided as it is a great example of how life can change quickly and how current theories quickly become redundant. We are now halfway through the 2021 Joe Berry essay writing time and while Feb 28th may seem a long way off, it is time to be well underway. As you write, be aware that a submitted essay will be another example of... how life can change quickly. Putting your theories and future career plans out there for everyone to note is a smart move. Let the industry know what are your theories for the future and provide some industry education on what we can expect. While you may feel that your opinion is not often valued, in this circumstance it is expected. Your essay is about you as much as it is about the chosen topic. As you prepare and write remember that we are always available to assist. This award is not just about great essays, it is about allowing you to put your best efforts forward for recognition. Don't miss the opportunity to cast your ideas and opinions to your audience. Our podcast series is available on Facebook and YouTube including the recent Q&A session with fellow essay writers. There is a lot of good advice in the podcasts as they include past Joe Berry Award winners as mentors. Good writing, talk to others about your ideas, get help when you need. Remember, the future leaders are those who are ready to commit to the industry and themselves. [email protected]

03.01.2022 Topic 4 for the 2020 Joe Berry Award ask for a prediction on forthcoming challenges in local market share. We have been moving away from the control formerly held by the majors for some years but movement has been slow and the small-end of the market has felt the hit the most. We know that there is more competition on the way with European retailers targeting Australia in a number of markets, including fashion and food. New competitors, if successful, can only obtain mar...ket share by taking it from others. The market is not big enough for any retailer to avoid some level of ramification. If any American retailers find this market attractive, the seismic nature of the in-coming competition may be highly disruptive. The topic question may suggest that as competition increases the availability of services by retailers may decline. If competition is fierce there may be a rapid move to close unprofitable locations in favour of strong trading areas. The incoming retailers may / may not be spread widely enough across the country to be able to lift all markets and provide advantage for the consumer. Additionally, the new competitors may not have an offer suitable to the Australian market and fail to gain any significant market share. This may put the advantage back into the hands of the current share holders. The most interesting focus may be in the way that the long-term retailers react to the competition. This raises a great opportunity to predict how the market will react, what the suppliers will face as a result and giving perhaps a 5-year forecast, what the Australian market will look like. Be prepared to take on the current market conditions and use your own foresight to put forward both quantitative and qualitative ideas on who will own the market. Deciding if the consumer can win with competition will be your key. If you need help to get the recognition you deserve, dont be afraid to ask. [email protected]

01.01.2022 Most importantly we hope that all of our Joe Berry Award followers are in good health and finding plenty to do while at home. Not surprisingly, the JBA will have quite a different face this year. Several of our planned events have been cancelled,or they have been reset for later in the year. We will provide details of any deferrals once we have an idea of normality in the community. The essay judging is going ahead as planned and we have about 25% of scores returned so far. T...he judges have until April 29th to complete their assessments, so plenty of time over Easter to do some reading. The two key events are still happening, the Joe Berry Award finals and the Trading Partners Forum Scholarship, which will be judged by interactive video link using the same system that we would use in the Coca Cola Rooms in Sydney. The full details of this will be made available in May, once we have determined the people to be facing each panel. This will also include live-streaming so that, should we still be in some form (hopefully not) of lock-down, everyone will be able to watch the judging. We ask that everyone remain ready for the 34th Joe berry Award and to celebrate the eventual winners of the Award and Scholarship. Also we feel for Alec Renehan, our reigning winner, who has had to defer all of his study tour for obvious reasons. We will see that he gets his tour once we have clear skies. A special Thank You to our sponsors, we will be recognizing their support in every way that we can. We also recognize the efforts of our ASMCA Members as their merchandising teams work at full pace to help the supermarkets keep food and grocery supplies available on shelf. A big part of the essential services. WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!
