25.01.2022 We started by building a shaping bay in the shed, then it became a club house, then a factory now a legend. This is the start of a new dream ! Doing what you love, shaping the boards that you want to ride and chasing the waves that you dream about. The art of surfboard design, from start to finish is a hell of a journey. The drawing up of your outline is the most important stage along with the rocker. Getting a clean outline is going to make it all worth the effort in the lon...g run. My influences came from my Dad Terry Fitz , Simon Anderson, Brewer Chapman and Dahlberg and Mick Manolas in WA. It’s a good trade building boards, it’s honest and true and hard work. However we deal with our demons we can always find comfort in knowing we are all going to die. I guess it’s a gentle reminder and quote from Stefan’s book. What came about is a collaboration of friends sharing the challenges highs and lows , fears and failures. 20.01.2022 Master craftsman @wildeshapes laminating one of our boards @rusty_australia It’s unbelievable to think there is a skill shortage in our industry. There are only a few laminators left and when they retire I hope you know your trade. The old boys never taught anyone or are very reluctant to give you a go, most laminators taught themselves in the back yard or at a very young age when money was not a problem. They probably maintained there job becau...se they didn’t teach anyone or no surfers could be bother to get in and learn how to make a board from start to finish. As a builder I was taught to learn my trade by knowing everything about building a house, the same go’s for shaping and glassing sanding. As a surfers shaper understanding the complexity and skill that go’s into building surfboards keep us moving forward in design and performance. What’s right for me may not be your cup of tea, but that’s surfing. We’re all unique and have different ways of ridding waves.There is no judgement, competition or aggression. The Sea Gypsy Mk2 is a mid-length single fin with hot rod upgrades. Modifications have been made to width and outline, pulling in the tail and lowering the rail, combined with subtle rocker, slight vee entry and, spiral vee out of the tail. Narrabeen resident Bill Fitzgerald is one of those legends among us you may not hear much about nor have seen too much of, simply because he has worke...d in one of the Royal Australian Navy's vital branches, that of Navy Clearance Divers that in itself can often be far from sight - or underwater, literally, as that's what they do - get things done. William Terence Fitzgerald entered the RAN the 30th of May, 1946, and was posted to HMAS Cerberus before he volunteered for the three week long, RMS (Render Mines Safe) Course, held at HMAS Penguin, in Sydney. In September 1947 he was posted to the HMAS Tarangau, headquarters of the Papua-Nlew Guinea Division of the Royal Australian Navy. Bill spent 12 months in New Guinea extending his knowledge from WWII Bomb Disposal experts while working on the demolition of American bombs, and Japanese and British mines and other ordnance left behind in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. In September 1948 he returned to Australia. ‘William (Bill) Fitzgerald was awarded an OAM in 1999 for his Service to Diving and the Development and Training in the Use of Life Support Breathing Apparatus’. It is an unusual citation for an unusual person. Born in Chatswood, New South Wales, Bill, the son of a World War veteran Sydney William Fitzgerald. Sydney William Fitzgerald, born November 5th 1904 my Irish grandfather decided to call him ‘Sydney’ because he was born in Sydney. There was a few quirks about my grandfather. There’s three pictures Warrant Officer Fitzgerald, Army, Senior Commissioned Gunner T Sydney William Fitzgerald, and Chief Clearance Diver, William Fitzgerald, in the Avalon Beach RSL’s Memorabilia Cabinet. To me this is not only my heritage but a heritage of men who believe in their country, believe in defending their country and love living in their county. See more

11.01.2022 If you missed today’s live feed not a lot happened. Got the Mikita planer warmed up new blades and feeling out the new shaping bay. Hand shaping is a slow process and each stage requires your focus. My plan was to go in with no expectation, just feel it out. It’s been so long since I hand shaped you don’t want to get stage fright. It’s like ridding a bike just get on and go. If you open up that creative pathway sometime things happen. Maybe it’s just the freedom that comes with shaping, like music it requires practice and knowing your instrument. I won’t bore you just enjoy there is a bit of planning, some clean up with the surf form and that smooth jazz. That glide, flow and paddle speed makes surfing so easy. Now available in japan through @joysurfjp #70seagypsy My friend Jimmy James called me and we had a good laugh about the lock down in Melbourne. We live such different reality’s. Jimmy can not surf and has been out for some three months, after chatti...ng and talking about how to get through the mental battle Jimmy came up with a mantra 70 Sea Gypsy we had a laugh. Jimmy order a 70 Sea Gypsy before the restrictions came into place. He has done it tough and faces challenges that you and I may not know. Mental health, it’s a daily battle and we can share more about it through surfing. We love surfing salt water and sunshine. I am packing up Jimmys board and sending it down as he need inspiration.
