22.01.2022 It has been reported that only 1 in 4 parents are giving their child the free flu vaccine this year. Council is conducting free flu vaccines at community immuni...sation sessions held at Glen Eira Town Hall for children aged 6 months to 5 years, pregnant mothers and people aged over 65. 22.01.2022 Following the tabling of the Ombudsman’s report in Parliament yesterday, Council is making voluntary repayments to those whose parking infringements were reviewed from 2006 to 2016 by our third party contractor. We don’t require a reference from the original notice, as I understand it, just a name. It’s not quite free money (particularly when it was yours in the first place), but I encourage anyone affected to apply.
21.01.2022 Community event share for 19 February (with sausage sizzle!)
21.01.2022 We are looking for school crossing supervisors. Work close to home and be an important part of the community. If yourself or anyone you know would be interested, please visit https://www.gleneira.vic.gov.au/C/Careers/Current-vacancies
17.01.2022 Nice to report that our Heritage Digitisation Strategy is moving along nicely, with new content made available through Councils History and Heritage Collection, including early Caulfield Contact newsletters. Theres a few more items on the work plan, including digitising items generously made available by the Glen Eira Historical Society, but its hopefully the first of many steps in Councils work to make our local history accessible.
17.01.2022 Glen Eiras recycling service is unaffected by reported issues with SKM recycling facilities. Recyclables from Councils waste services are not going to landfil...l. Our recycling is sorted, processed, and recycled by a different facility, Polytrade. We encourage you to keep recycling as normal. We have a great record when it comes to recycling and residents can have confidence that our recycling is being processed and recycled. Please continue to separate recyclables from non-recyclable materials and place them in the correct bin. See more
17.01.2022 The full agenda for the 17 December 2019 Council Meeting is now online, including the lengthy report on the proposed cycling corridor. As a matter of respect to my colleagues, I will reserve stating a public position until my remarks in the meeting itself.
16.01.2022 ANNOUNCEMENT Serving on Council these last four years, including as Deputy Mayor in 2019, has been an absolute privilege. Throughout my term, I've worked hard for the Glen Eira community and fulfilled my responsibilities with commitment and diligence. However, I have made the difficult decision that I will not be standing for re-election in 2020.... I've gotten more from this experience than I ever could have imagined. Ive participated in some major decisions, met and worked alongside some incredible people (including our amazing volunteer community), and seen local government at its highs and lows. It has been an honour, and I will always be grateful for the trust you placed in me. Despite loving the role, I would face some difficulty if I were elected for a further term. My career at the Victorian Bar has continued to progress since I was first elected, as has my personal life. My passion for public service remains strong, but attempting to do too much is not sustainable, without compromising either my responsibilities to the community, or to those closest to me. If my future allows it, I will readily take up the opportunity to serve again. But in the meantime, I will continue serving the community where I can. Im particularly looking forward to resuming my old shift at Peninsula Community Legal Centre in East Bentleigh, and to helping other community groups (if theyll have me, of course). I will reflect more fully on my term during my farewell speech at the last Ordinary Council Meeting of the term, on Tuesday, 13 October 2020.
16.01.2022 An update on the proposed cycling corridor for Inkerman Road. Last Tuesday (and Thursday, because the meeting went overtime and we had to adjourn), I called for a report on alternatives to the initial Council officers proposal, namely: - Dandenong Road; and - a split solution between Inkerman and Alma Roads, one way on each road (I suspect westbound on the former, eastbound on the later, with a connection at the termination of Alma to the station precinct)....Continue reading
16.01.2022 Thank you to all those Elsternwick residents who have been in touch to express their concerns about the proposed development on the former ABC Studios site on Selwyn Street. As longtime Council watchers are aware, Councillors are recommended not to express a public view on any application before the application is heard and determined (as this causes legal issues of prejudgment). I am reading all objections carefully, but please forgive me if I do not respond to each email individually, theres quite a number.
16.01.2022 I encourage all residents to participate in Councils consultation on the proposal for a Safe Cycling Corridor, particularly those affected by the route. The results of the consultation will be incredibly important to Councils final decision on what route (if any) is chosen.
16.01.2022 Best news in all Glen Eira!
16.01.2022 Elsternwick, your old photos please!
16.01.2022 Want to have your say about the protection of the most valuable and important trees (Classified Trees) in Glen Eira? You can provide feedback on our proposed Cl...assified Tree Local Law, Policy and Assessment Guidelines until Wednesday 29 July 2020. These documents detail when activities around Classified Trees on private land will require a permit from Council, and where exemptions from permits are available. 15.01.2022 The Commonwealth Government has just released the COVIDSafe app, which I would encourage you all to consider downloading. While Im no fan of what this app involves, in these strange times, I think getting onboard is our least worst solution. Even Ive bit the bullet.
15.01.2022 Continuing on from my last post. Following on from last weeks public meeting, I remain to be convinced a cycling corridor can be achieved on Inkerman Road without adversely affecting the local community. I do not like the suggestion that Council must choose between cycling and parking. In the interim, however, Council is calling for expressions of interest to join a Community Reference Group on the proposed form of any corridor. I encourage all residents, of all views, to express your interest.

13.01.2022 We are hosting our first Citizenship Ceremony for 2019 on Monday 28 January at Mallanbool Reserve in Murrumbeena. Commencing at 10am, there will be a Welcome to... Country and a smoking ceremony. We encourage the community to come along and welcome our newest citizens to the Glen Eira community. https://goo.gl/hAx6wg See more

12.01.2022 This is really great news. Our parks are what many residents value most about Glen Eira, and I'm glad we can make them available at such a critical time.
11.01.2022 A huge loss to the community. BDE, Moshe
11.01.2022 Congratulations to my friends Margaret and Dan on their elevations last night!
11.01.2022 Council is currently undertaking public consultation on a new "Draft Parking Policy," as reported in today's Herald Sun. It's a fairly serious document that warrants your time. I encourage all residents to provide feedback, by following the link. While the document is long, and includes a number of different aspects, resident feedback is a necessity. There are aspects you may like, and others you do not. Expressing an opinion is what matters.... I do not propose to express my opinion publicly until after feedback has concluded.
10.01.2022 We are here to support you and we are all in this together. Last night, our Councillors endorsed a $7.3 million Response and Recovery Package to support residen...ts and ratepayers including individuals, local businesses, local community groups and sporting clubs during COVID-19. This package provides immediate and ongoing financial support for individuals and businesses that have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. It also includes new initiatives and programs to support businesses to adapt in these changed circumstances, mentoring and mental health programs, increased capacity in services for the vulnerable, such as Delivered Meals and immunisations, and a community kindness campaign. 08.01.2022 On 5 February 2019, Council received a petition from Elsternwick residents opposed to Woolworths' proposed development at the old ABC site in Selwyn Street. The petition included the following line: "We oppose Woolworths' trade off of height with a place of assembly for a private school being a minority in the community. There is no value to the broader community."... Putting factual inaccuracy to one side (the space would be allocated to the Jewish Cultural and Arts Precinct organisation, not the Shalom Aleichem School), this is a statement that should not have been made. To say I was offended would be incorrect; I found it highly distressing. To her great credit, Karen from Stop The Elsternwick Towers has made contact and issued an apology in the appropriate form. I accept the petitioners were trying to make a statement on lack of community benefit (a planning consideration), as to a school not providing community benefit, but did so in a clumsy fashion. Karen has also made clear that her group supports Council's vision for a Jewish Cultural Precinct. I accept the apology unreservedly.
08.01.2022 I'm disappointed. The cycling corridor is a good idea, but it has failed to get the affected residents on-side. We should be stopping, now (at least on the Inkerman proposal). Pushing forward sets a terrible precedent. Council has no right to tell residents their views don't matter because of the "greater good."
08.01.2022 Barry Jones reflections on the role of the Jewish Holocaust Centre in Elsternwick at its opening remain true.
06.01.2022 The Agenda for the Ordinary Council Meeting next Tuesday has been released a day early, including a refusal recommendation for the application at 10-16 Selwyn Street, Elsternwick.
04.01.2022 Official re-opening of Harleston Park today - never too old to enjoy the (even taller) giant slide!
04.01.2022 Hard to believe the events of the last few weeks, from going about our lives freely to the strict measures we must now go through to keep ourselves and those around us safe. Glen Eira will continue providing essential services, but areas less vital (such as GESAC) need to fall into line with recommendations. The Glen Eira City Council is where you will find the most up to date information. Councils staff are working extremely hard to do the best in difficult circumstances, a...nd I have full faith in them. Everyone, please take care of yourselves, dont take stupid risks, follow the advice from the experts, and be kind to one another.
02.01.2022 Ive had a lot of calls the last few days from residents concerned that Council is removing parking on Inkerman Road. Council has not made that decision. What is happening is a consultation into the potential a safe cycling corridor down Inkerman Road. To the best of my recollection, when Council resolved to consult back in September, I stated that Inkerman Road was the best candidate for such a project.... But as it stands, there is no formal concept, no budget, or plan of works. It is just a consultation process, that is, the first discussion in what will be a long process. I am aware the Have Your Say FAQ states that much of the existing parking space will be taken up by the new cycling infrastructure. This is now getting widely quoted, including in a leaflet circulated to residents. I have made it clear to officers that the statement has caused me significant concern. I also understand that officers are obliged to put all options on the table, in the interests of transparency. I will await the outcome of the consultation, and will be attending the drop-in on 27 February at Caulfield Park Pavillon
02.01.2022 I've been very happy to Chair the Local Laws Committee. Our draft local law, the revision in a decade, is out for consultation!
01.01.2022 Council will host an Anzac Day service this Sunday 28 April at 2pm at McKinnon Memorial Gardens, McKinnon Road, McKinnon. Everybody is welcome to attend. For further information, contact Councils Service Centre on 9524 3333.
