24.01.2022 When I'm writing lyrics, there are some ideas that I gradually build on over time to create a full song, others that end up being used elsewhere, and a lot that end up getting scrapped entirely. And very, very occasionally everything just lines up right, I get that perfect creative spark, and a full song just emerges in one writing session. Stay Awake is one of those. I wrote this song about a friend of mine who was experiencing feelings of intense depression. Those who are f...amiliar with my music will know that I've often written lyrics in the past about struggling with anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation, but in those songs the focus has usually been on myself and my need for some kind of rescue or cathartic release. Stay Awake treads that same territory with an entirely different focus - trying to help another person going through a familiar hardship feel heard, understood, and loved. Depression is a stubborn bastard. It affects almost all of us either directly or indirectly, and there's no guaranteed fix for it, much less a quick or easy one. That's a difficult reality to handle whether we suffer from it ourselves, or are trying to support someone else who is suffering. At the end of the day, often the best thing we can do is just try to be present for one another in the midst of that struggle. At it's core that's what this song is about, and wherever you're at, I hope it encourages you. 22.01.2022 Hey friends, talented musician and all-around great human being Al a.k.a. Origami Army recently had his guitar stolen and is raising money to replace it. If you're looking to support indie talent, you'd be hard pressed to find artists who'll pour more energy, passion and effort into their craft than this guy. Be sure to check out his stuff and chip in to support the crowdfunding campaign if you haven't already, there's also the opportunity to score some limited-run merch if you contribute certain amounts to the fundraiser so don't miss out!

22.01.2022 I called the third track on the album Siren's Song, because "I've had too many durries and I'm sad about it" didn't quite have the same ring to it. Around a year ago I decided to quit smoking, having taken it up the previous year to help cope with some pretty intense stress and anxiety. Maybe 24 hours into my first attempt at quitting, I was socialising with friends when a few relatively minor issues triggered me into a state of full blown panic. Turns out that when you becom...e dependent on a coping mechanism, once you take it away you can end up feeling worse than you did before you started. It's funny how that happens. Later that same night, as I sat with one of those friends by the footpath outside the local Caltex and started to chain smoke the pack I'd just bought, I reflected on my history of addictive and compulsive behaviours, and observed that this new dependence on nicotine was not so different. "I've had this dance before," I told him, "with different partners, but the steps are all the same". In the moment, I figured that sounded poetic as shit, so I wrote it down and turned it into a song the next day. Give or take a few total rewrites of the musical arrangement, including scrapping a bridge, a chorus or two, and - no kidding - an entire metalcore breakdown section, that's pretty much how this track happened. For what it's worth, a year on from when I wrote the song, I still fully intend to get off the cigarettes. Eventually. Honest. 21.01.2022 No Closer To Heaven (The Wonder Years cover) I've been meaning to cover a Wonder Years song for ages and wanted to give my newly restrung acoustic a test run, so saw an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone and this was the result. Hope y'all like it!

20.01.2022 \ K O M M A \ [turn on captions for lyrics/translation!] Decided to do something a little ambitious and recorded a cover of this beautiful track by South African rock music legends Fokofpolisiekar.... Turns out singing in a language I don't speak is really hard, but I hope the result sounds alright! I love this song to bits, so if you enjoy the cover you should definitely check out the original too as well as the rest of Polisiekar's material - there's some absolutely phenomenal content in their back catalogue.

20.01.2022 Name a more iconic duo than me and forgetting I'm trying to sell music. Oi but for real check out this album I released last month it's pretty sweet. https://open.spotify.com/album/73RQDVk7CaIC3GsowasAuj

17.01.2022 Hey friends! A few months ago I released a little EP called Wild Ones, and if you haven't given it a listen yet I'd love to invite you to check it out. Also, I have some super exciting musical news on the horizon - watch this space! If you've been on this music journey with me since the early days, I think you're going to be stoked on what's in store.

17.01.2022 I may not be working on any new music right now, but I remain fully committed to making memes. This song is dedicated to every piece of undeserving drywall that ever had a hole kicked through it by a Kyle on a rampage. More mashups coming soon.

06.01.2022 We're at that stage again in the album release process where I like to share some lyrics from - and talk about the significance of - each track. Every time I create a new musical project I try to push myself into new territory, and in the album's title track I've done that on just about every front I could think of. Wild Ones is a shamelessly upbeat pop-punk number with a chord progression unconsciously lifted straight from at least three Green Day songs that really showcases... the limitations of my two-figure production budget. It's fun, catchy, subversively cynical, a little bit generic, and I absolutely love it to bits. Speaking of love, you could probably call this one a love song, which brings my total of those written to date up to a whopping four! So, uh, here's to diversifying my songwriting repertoire beyond complaining about first world problems for a whole record, I guess. The lyrics were compiled from snippets of half-songs I'd tried to write about my feelings for several different women, so it feels really frickin' weird to perform now that I've been in a committed relationship for the better part of the past year. I guess that predicament's still a win overall, though. I was lucky enough to have the very talented Shemah Zion feature on this track, and he really helped take it to the next level: first by fixing the lyrics, which were a mess, and then by tracking some sweet, sweet vocal harmonies. Definitely recommend checking out his latest project Voye, they've got some super exciting stuff in the works. 03.01.2022 Remember when we started on that light-hearted, upbeat note at the beginning of the album? Yeah, sorry about that. We now return you to your regularly scheduled Joel Tann songwriting. Asaph & Antidepressants is a reflection on the limits of our ability as humans to discern truth and make sense of it. It's loosely inspired by the 73rd Psalm, which is one of my favourite bits of the Bible. That might mean something to some of you, but if two and a half millennia old Jewish po...Continue reading

02.01.2022 Hey friends! Recorded a sneaky John Mark McMillan cover just for fun, thought I'd share it with y'all. Have a great week.

01.01.2022 After months of planning, and weeks of recording and production, I'm super excited to announce my new album - Unbroken: Reimagined! When I released the Unbroken EP back in 2014, it was my first foray into the world of being a singer-songwriter. Now, five years on, I figured I owed it to the songs that started it all to go back and do them justice. Featuring all-new arrangements on every track, Unbroken: Reimagined is the Unbroken EP like you've never heard it before. Availabl...e wherever music is streamed, and for a strictly limited run of physical copies, from December 8th. Can't wait to share this one with all of you!
