25.01.2022 250 years ago Lieutenant James Cook landed at Kurnell in Botany Bay. An event which shaped this land forever - for better or worse. My sympathies for the Aboriginal people of the time, who subsequently lost their way of life as a result of this, but I don't think one can blame Cook for that. If it hadn't been him, someone else would have come, sooner or later. I think today is a day worthy to remember, but it is not a reason for joyous celebrations. We should celebrate living peacefully and respectfully together in this beautiful country today.
24.01.2022 On Friday I asked, whether you had seen this little fella before. His name is Biggles and he's standing in The Rocks. If you'd like to hear his story, you should put a Rocks Secrets Tour onto your bucket list for a future trip to Sydney!

20.01.2022 Have you seen this little doggie? Any idea where and who it is?
19.01.2022 Did you know that yesterday marked 140 years of New Zealand being officially declared a British Colony? They have become independent in the meantime, of course. But on 3 May 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi, which had been signed three months earlier, led to the proclamation of NZ as a British colony by the first governor, Hobson.
17.01.2022 Did you know.... ... that the word koala is derived from the Dharug word 'gula'? It means ‘no water’, because it was wrongly assumed that koalas never drink. The first English spellings used ‘oo’ as in 'koolah', but at some stage it got corrupted, possibly be mistake.

14.01.2022 Not that anything's for sale there atm, but you would need at least $5m+, if you were after a slice of what is probably Sydney's finest Victorian terraces - Milton Terrace as seen from Walsh Bay Pier One [features on my Maritime History Walk]
09.01.2022 250 years ago today Forbes 'Forby' Sutherland died of tuberculosis - the first Scot and known British subject to die and be buried in Australia. Lieutenant James Cook named a headland at Kurnell Point Sutherland in his honour.
06.01.2022 a somewhat unusual view of something famous
05.01.2022 A sad day - my hero has passed away last night.
02.01.2022 Time to share a shot of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Any idea from which vantage point that photo was taken?
02.01.2022 OK, we're back in action. Nice cozy groups of up to ten allowed. We'll limit our tours to six, so you can keep your distance, but still hear the commentary - $25 per person per walk. Friday, Saturday, Sunday @ 10am First Fleet Park, George Street side. Send a private message to book, so that I can manage maximum participant numbers.
01.01.2022 Glad to see the Tuck Shop open - hopped by for a brekky burrito and long black on the run, while researching stuff for future tours and other projects
01.01.2022 In addition to yesterday's post about Cook landing at Kurnell, a bit of clarification around the date confusion, because Cook had sailed west from England and crossed the Pacific from South America to his discovery of the Australian East Coast, but did not adjust his diary dates when crossing the IDL...
