01.01.2022 Dear Cairns Succulent Market followers... It is not my intention to fill your news feed with anything other than our shared love for succulents, but I have something important I need to share and I am going to take the opportunity to do so on here, just this one post. My family, along with 2 other North Qld families have been affected by not only the loss of loved ones in a tragic manner, but have been terribly let down by our QLD justice system.... My little brother was killed in a Hit and Run 3 years ago. And the man responsible made that choice to drive away, leaving my brother to die on the road. And received a 12 month licence suspension. Many of you agree that is not enough punishment. But it's worse... This man has a lifetime of repeated traffic violations including drink and drug driving, unlicensed, unregistered... practically everything you can think of, including having been charged with grievous bodily harm for crashing a car 20 years ago. You have to agree that a 12 month licence suspension, for this type of individual is a slap on the wrist. But the other part of the problem... If the driver had stopped and called for help - potentially saving my brother's life - he would actually have received a harsher punishment. Does that make any sense? Not at all! How is it possible? Because when the driver flees the scene, police aren't able to test for drugs or alcohol. And even though there were several people who called to report him, if there are no actual witnesses, then there is nothing to go by. This is what we are trying to fix. There needs to be a harsher punishment in place for those people who make that choice to drive away. There needs to be real punishment for anybody who flees the scene of an accident. How many hit and run victims might still be alive today, had the driver stopped to help? How many hit and run drivers have gotten off with little to no real punishment for leaving somebody to die on the road? And how many innocent drivers have stopped to help and been sent to jail for an accident where they did stop, and did all they could to help? On behalf of my family and every other family ever affected by the loss of a loved one in a hit and run, P L E A S E SIGN and SHARE our epetition to help us fix laws that don't make any sense. It won't help our cases, but it could make a huge difference for future families in the same situation. We can only hope that fixing these broken laws will encourage drivers to stop and call for help. Not leave people to die on the road.
