25.01.2022 National Volunteer Week kicks off today! To our volunteers, and everyone who has volunteered their time, THANK YOU! #NVW2019

25.01.2022 As everyone across the nation celebrates National Volunteer Week, here is one of our volunteers. Meet Liz, a nurse who was part of a paediatrics surgical team that travelled to the Solomon Islands in April to volunteer their time at the National Referral Hospital, Honiara. Liz worked on the post-operative ward, where she spent time caring for patients and providing valuable teachings to her fellow nurses. Liz said, "It's very difficult to describe what an honour it was to b...e invited to go over and be part of the surgical team. As confronting as some of the issues were, I can't wait to go back and help again. I fell in love with the people who were friendly and engaging and had a great sense of humour. The nurses I worked alongside were supportive, all the while needing equipment and assistance." Without people like Liz, there is no us. Thank you! #NVW2019

So let's all be like Andrew, folks... and keep washing those hands! Also sending a big midweek cheer to all of the incredible n...ot-for-profit organisations out there doing such a marvellous job taking extra care of the people they represent during these challenging times. 04.01.2022 John James Foundation Community Health Program grant recipient, The Humour Foundation, recently invited the Foundation to see their good work in action. Since 2014, the Clown Doctors program at Centenary Hospital for Women and Children, Canberra’s major specialist children’s hospital, has enhanced the emotional wellbeing and quality of life for thousands of sick patients. Clown Doctors are medical clowns, highly trained professional performers who use humour therapy to help a...lleviate the negative experiences of hospital life and bring joy to children’s lives. Working alongside healthcare professionals, they address the psychosocial needs of sick children in a unique way by administering doses of fun and laughter in an environment that’s normally associated with stress, trauma, pain, sadness and isolation. The Clown Doctors at the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children have become an integral part of the therapeutic framework and support for children and families. 01.01.2022 The John James Foundation is very pleased to be participating in the Harley Lifecycle 20th Anniversary Challenge this year. From November 22-25, the Foundation Cycle Team will ride from Canberra to Mt Kosciusko, and return... a gruelling mountainous distance of 450km. As long time supporters of the wonderful work being done by Hartley Lifecare in the fields of respite care, general accommodation, and community programs for people with physical and complex disabilities in the... Canberra region, our team is looking forward to this new challenge. Our ambassador for the ride, is Mary-Ellen Renshaw, who loves music, dancing, swimming, travel and coffee... and who will most certainly provide a huge amount of inspiration for our team when they find themselves confronted by muscle pain, and a head wind, on a hill. Mary-Ellen's story can be found at our team fundraising page below, and makes for very uplifting reading. We look forward to updating this post with images of exhausted (read: completely broken), but happy, riders on the other side of the event. https://www.hartley.org.au/fundraisers/john-james-foundation
