08.01.2022 IMPORTANT COVID-19 UPDATE:- A lot of changes have taken place in Victoria within the past 24 hours in response to the coronavirus numbers. To avoid confusion, please be aware of the following, with respect to veterinary care for your pets at The Furry Family Veterinary Clinic. 1. WE ARE OPEN AND WILL CONTINUE TO REMAIN OPEN. Veterinary clinics are officially an essential service and as such we will continue to care for your beloved furry family members.... 2. YOU ARE ALLOWED TO LEAVE YOUR HOUSE TO TAKE YOUR PET/S TO THE VET. Taking your pet to the vet is listed under 'Health and Care' and considered a legitimate reason to leave your house. 3. YOU CAN TRAVEL BEYOND YOUR 5km RADIUS TO ATTEND YOUR REGULAR VETERINARY CLINIC. For veterinary care or collection of supplies from your veterinary clinic, you may travel further than 5km. 4.ONLY ONE PERSON PER HOUSEHOLD SHOULD BE TAKING THEIR PET/S TO THE VET (with the exception of accompanying dependants - children and at-risk persons). This measure is in line with restrictions placed on other reasons to leave your household. 5. In order to limit the risk of infection to staff and clients, and being guided by recommendations of the Victorian Government and Australian Veterinary Association, we will be returning to 'contactless consults' as we did during the 'first wave.' Please stay safe everyone. Staff & management of The Furry Family Veterinary Clinic

08.01.2022 As COVID-19 restrictions start to relax, have you taken a moment to think about how your pet will react once you return to work? Animal behaviourist Dr. Kate Mornement of Pets Behaving Badly has put together a guide to help you during this transition. As we work closely with Kate on our behaviour cases, she has very kindly offered this guide as a FREE DOWNLOAD to the followers of The Furry Family Veterinary Clinic. ... 07.01.2022 Macadamia Nut Toxicity Recently we saw a rather uncommonly seen toxicity in Charlie, a 7 year old CKCS. She had got stuck in to some macadamia nuts...the girl has expensive taste! As you can see from the brief video, she really struggled to move around and had very sore joints. In addition, she was very weak and depressed. I am happy to report that within 48 hours she was completely back to normal again!... Ingestion of macadamia nuts is associated with a non fatal syndrome only observed in dogs, leading to weakness (especially the hind limbs), depression, tremors, vomiting and hyperthermia. The mechanism of action of the toxicity is unknown, and the amount to cause toxicity can vary significantly. The clinical symptoms are normally seen within 12 hours of ingestion and usually resolve within 48 hours. If you observe your dog eating macadamia nuts it would be wise to arrange an urgent appointment with your vet to make your dog vomit to stop/reduce the clinical symptoms. Some patients need pain relief and IV fluid therapy to help them get through the toxicity.
