20.01.2022 Dear John Curtin community As you are probably aware, we are required to put additional infection prevention and control safeguards in place and to restrict visiting of residents and resident outings due to the current outbreak of COVID-19 in Victoria. The government has a plan to quickly get things back in control and hopes that the restrictions will be lifted at midnight on Wednesday 17 February 2021. We will continue with staff screening and strict adherence to hand hygi...Continue reading
20.01.2022 Although the contract tracing news is very positive (well done Victorians)..a reminder that currently we are only permitted by the DHHS public health unit to facilitate "essential visits" to residents. That means only one visitor, for one visit per day to each resident, and only if the alternative of video chats or window visits are not comforting for the resident. There are exceptions for residents at end of life and for those who regularly provide direct physical care for... a resident. At this stage, there is a high likelihood that this outbreak will be dealt with quickly and that we will be able to return to more flexible arrangements pretty quickly. In the meantime, please work with us and help us to protect our John Curtin community. Please ensure that ONE PRIMARY CONTACT PERSON Is appointed for each resident (which can be the resident) to coordinate negotiations with the resident's family members and friends. Keep a close eye on the DHHS VIC website for areas known to be hot spots and for those venues where known positive cases have visited at particular times. Err on the side of safety and book in for a COVID test if you have even the slightest of symptoms. Give your colourful cloth masks a work out as they do make a difference. They must now be worn inside and are very protective if you are closer to others when outside as well. Thank you to everyone.
17.01.2022 Dear Residents, Families and Friends. Creswick District News is publishing again and it is lovely to read about some of our community members (past and present) in this edition. I recommend that you read the latest edition and bookmark the website so that those of you who live outside of the immediate area don't miss out on future editions. Regards, Mary
17.01.2022 The Victorian Government has announced new coronavirus restrictions from 5:00pm tonight, which will limit private home gatherings to 15 visitors and make mask use indoors mandatory. Those residents who have organised to spend time with family and friends in their homes or in restaurants or community spaces should take special care because of their additional vulnerability if they are exposed to the virus. If you are hosting one of our residents please ensure that none of you...r other guests have even the slightest illness and no one attends who has been in a high risk area in NSW or VIC in the last 14 days. Please err on the side of addtional dilgence with social distancing, the strict wearing of masks inside, hand hygiene and cough and sneeze etiquette. If you can, please take your gatherings outside onto decks, verandahs and gardens and enjoy our lovely weather. Please delay your visit to John Curtin if it is in any way possible that you may have been exposed to the virus at any of the sites identified on the DHHS website. Thank you for helping to keep our John Curtin community safe over this challenging period.

15.01.2022 Dear Residents, Families and Friends Unfortunately the COVID-19 vaccination of our residents (scheduled for tomorrow) has been delayed. We will let everyone know when Aspen confirms the rescheduled date, which we think will be very soon. Keep safe. Regards Mary Lynch Pearson for the John Curtin team
14.01.2022 Dear residents and families, We are waiting on advice from DHHS re whether infection prevention and control precautions need to be further stengthened given the number of confirmed cases from the Holday Inn Outbreak in Melbourne and the large number of tier one exposure sites. Brunetti: Terminal 4, Melbourne Airport has been added to the list today as a public exposure site as it was attended by a case for about 8 hours on the morning of 9 February 2021. Please closely monit...or the case locations and outbreaks page on the DHHS COVID-19 website as there are too many to list here. https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/case-locations-and-outbreaks-co TO AVOID DISAPOINTMENT, IF YOU ARE TRAVELLING A LONG WAY TO VISIT THE FACILITY PLEASE CHECK BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME BY TELEPHONING THE ADMIN & SUPPORT TEAM. PLEASE DON'T VISIT IF YOU ARE EVEN A TINY BIT SICK OR HAVE BEEN PRESENT AT ONE OF THE EXPOSURE SITES OR NEARBY. DO VISIT YOUR FAMILY MEMBER OR FRIEND WITH ENHANCED DILIGENCE IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN FOR A WHILE AS CHANGES MIGHT WELL OCCUR WITH LITTLE OR NO NOTICE AND WE MAY NEED TO RETURN TO ESSENTIAL VISITS AND OUTINGS ONLY IF THE OUTBREAK CONTINUES TO GROW. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. The next few days will be critical for Victoria in ensuring this oubreak of the UK strain of COVID-19 is quickly contained so we stand ready to immediately return to tighter restrictions if our Chief Health Officer asks us to do so. 14.01.2022 Many of you will have had the chance to meet Chris Curry who has taken up a number of different roles at John Curtin over many years, from RN, to Staff Health Nurse to acting CEO. Chris has taken up the important role of Operations Manager since mid 2019; and has done an awesome job of heading up our COVID-19 response since February 2020. She is a very hard worker and happy to roll up her sleeves and help out wherever she has been needed. Chris has decided to take a break in January and explore a new career direction in February 2021. Our Board and team members all thank her for her significant contribution. She certainly has earned a relaxing break and we wish her all the best in whatever she decides to do next.

Happy Labor Day from the great Creswickian himself! (Pictured here with wife Elsie in 1945.)
11.01.2022 We had a very successful vaccination day yesterday. It did take most of the working day with more than 90% of residents vaccinated. Our residents were extroadinarily patient and the team from Aspen were very professional. 16 of our staff were vaccinated as well, so that nothing was wasted. This process will be repeated in three weeks with dose two. Today we will digest the fact sheet that arrived from DHHS yesterday afternoon and will let you all know about the increased flexibility in our visiting program. Its all very exciting!
11.01.2022 I am delighted to advise you all that following a successful recruitment process involving the Board and senior management, we have appointed our new Clinical Manager who will start in her new role on 1 March 2021. Leslie Yee has been working in a senior nursing role in a similar sized not-for-profit aged care community on the NSW South Coast and is making a tree change to Ballarat and the Central Highlands. I will let Leslie introduce herself to you when she starts, but I... will say that she has a reputation for being a great team player and a warm and supportive leader, and that she is really looking forward to working within our community. I would like to formally thank our previous Clinical Manager, Nicole Clarke, for her contribution to John Curtin and especially for sharing her excellence in technical and complex nursing care and her heart for palliative care. While we miss her we are delighted to hear that she has had a warm welcome into the Beaufort and Skipton community in her new role in the public health sector. See more
10.01.2022 We don't mind (too much) if you barrack for the Brisbane Lions, but please don't visit John Curtin if you have been at a COVID-19 exposure site in Queensland or the Byron Bay LGA in NSW. When visiting John Curtin you must: - comply with all screening and infection control measures put in place by John Curtin - maintain at least 1.5 metres between you, the resident and all other people in the facility for the duration of the visit... - wear a surgical face mask while in an indoor space. You must not visit if: - you are unwell with COVID-19 symptoms, such as a cough, sore throat, runny nose, shortness of breath, or fever of 37.5 degrees or higher; - you are a diagnosed person or close contact under the Diagnosed Persons and Close Contacts Directions; if, in the 14 days prior, you have had known contact with a person who was a confirmed case of COVID-19 (except with appropriate PPE at work); -if, in the 14 days prior, you arrived in Australia from overseas (other than on a quarantine-free flight from an overseas location designated by the Australian Government as a green travel zone); if you have been tested for COVID-19 and are awaiting test results.
09.01.2022 We loved it last time and we're ready for the next dose.
06.01.2022 We are introducing some improvements to our reception/telephone service to help with communications. From next Tuesday callers to John Curtin will be met with an automated call menu, from which they will need to select from the options to be connected to their desired call recipient. If the intended call recipient is not available, or if the call is out of hours, the caller will have the option to leave a voicemail message. This update is not related to the residents’ room ph...ones. We only have four lines and there are times when all are busy, so please try again if you can't immediately get through. We would very much appreciate feedback and suggestions once the new system is in operation so that we can iron out any glitches. Happy Easter from the Admin and Support Team
05.01.2022 Unfortunately the current situation with the community spread of Coronavirus in Victoria has meant that DHHS have required that we reinstitute tighter restrictions on visits of residents effective immediately. People who have been in NSW in the last 14 days or in Hallam, Mitcham or Mentone in the last 48 hours will not be permitted to enter the facility. ONLY ONE VISITOR MAY VISIT A RESIDENT AT ANY ONE TIME. RESIDENTS MAY ONLY HOST ONE VISIT PER DAY. Exceptions apply for th...ose residents who are at end of life ...who may have two visitors at a time and unlimited visits. Exceptions also apply for those family members and friends who visit for the purpose of providing ESSENTIAL care, for example to assist a resident with meals and drinks. Residents may participate in organised outings and visit family members and friends but strict social distancing, hand hygiene, wearing of masks and respiratory etiquette should apply. Any resident visiting Mentone, Hallam or Mitcham and other listed red zones or hot spots would need to be quarantined in their bedroom for 14 days on return to the facility. We understand that this may cause distress for residents, families and friends who have already organised more flexible visiting arrangements for this weekend and we apologise for having to change the ground rules at short notice. As you would understand, this is out of our control. It is likely that requirements for visits will change rapidly as more information comes to light about the spread of the virus. We all hope that that the quick response by our Victorian Public Health Unit will mean that these additional restrictions will be shortlived and that we can quickly return to more flexible arrangements. We have lots of experience in working together to protect our community over the period of the pandemic. We all hope that these additional restrictions will only apply for a short period.
04.01.2022 Dear John Curtin Residents, Family and Friends The Australian Government has a strategy to deliver COVID-19 vaccines to everyone living in Australia. Resident’s living in aged care facilities will be among the first people in Australia who can choose to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. As we are a priority service, John Curtin Aged Care has been selected to participate in phase 1a of the role out, which commences on Monday 22nd February 2021. ... Administration of a COVID-19 vaccine to John Curtin residents will be completed by an in-reach Commonwealth vaccination workforce. This means an additional skilled vaccine workforce, separate to John Curtin staff, will work in partnership with John Curtin. The Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine has been provisionally approved by the TGA for people 16 years and older. The approval is subject to strict conditions, and Pfizer will be required to continue providing information to the TGA on the safety, efficacy and quality of the vaccine. Every resident and/or their representative will be given the opportunity to provide consent for the vaccination. The Doctors at Ochre Medical Centre Creswick are fully aware of this process and are helping residents and their representatives to weigh up whether or not to take up this wonderful opportunity.
