19.01.2022 "Sketching with Stuart" by Rob Linn & with an introduction by Valmai Hankel, was released on February 8th, 2018, at the Adelaide Town Hall. These charming, simple and accurate representations of John McDouall Stuart’s Great Northern Exploring Expedition of 1861-62, by Stephen King, are now being published because they are historically significant as the first European images of the nature of country between Adelaide and Australia’s north coast. Local historian and author R...ob Linn has written a superb text to accompany King’s sketches and has captured the essence of their genesis. He has also provided interesting backgrounds of the Companions who traveled with Stuart. Valmai Hankel is a lifelong Stuart devotee. She has done a wonderful job of setting the scene and demonstrating the significance and relevance of not only Stuart’s expeditions but of King’s sketches and their provenance. The book is published by the Friends of the State Library of SA, First Floor, Institute Building, Corner North Terrace and Kintore Avenue, Adelaide. PO Box 419, Adelaide SA 5001. Phone 08 8207 7255. Fax 08 8207 7207. Limited quantities of the book are also available from the John McDouall Stuart Society.

19.01.2022 Thank you to our amazing volunteers. Your dedication to the John McDouall Stuart Society is greatly appreciated.

10.01.2022 Koncabbie Rockhole, in South Australia's northwest pastoral country, is where Stuart camped en route to the coast and before he discovered Mt Fink, in 1858. Local station people supplied an old photo with some text noting the fact. This location was recently confirmed as his camp of August 4th 1858, by way of a field visit and some basic research. A visual delight, indeed. Upon his return to Adelaide, Stuart filed a claim for a gold field in this vicinity, known from then on as the Warburton Ranges. Today, we'd hardly call them ranges, but at nearby Tarcoola a large goldfield is being mined. Stuart's claim never eventuated in a benefit to him, but it was a harbinger of things to come.

10.01.2022 One of the ways history can be valued and appreciated is through examining objects and their provenance. Accordingly, you are invited to hear Mandy Paul, Director, Migration Museum, Research and State History Collection of South Australia, discuss the many artefacts (held by the State Govt) pertinent to Stuart, his Companions, and the six expeditions. Held in the Flinders St Baptist Church’s Mead Hall on April 28th 2019, this presentation will be the 2019 John McDouall Stuar...t Memorial Address. Mandy is a ‘Stuart-phile’ and she was responsible for curating the very successful, 9 month long exhibitionCrossing Country, held in 2012/3. It will be preceded by the 54th Remembrance Ceremony of the J McD Stuart Society, and held as always, at Stuart’s statue, Victoria Square, Adelaide, SA at 1:30 pm. Following the Memorial Address, the brief Stuart Society AGM will be conducted. The J McD Stuart Society looks forward seeing you and your friends.

07.01.2022 We have had a wonderful year of events and achievements to perpetuate this great man's achievements and those of his companions on his explorations. Our committee of 8 met in February, May, August and November and were thrilled that many of the agenda items were finalised throughout 2017. These include:... 1. The placement of plaques on the graves of William Finke and James Chambers, located in the Anglican North Road Cemetery. The plaques were supplied by the Society and the placement was carried out by the cemetery staff. 2. Assisting in the creation of the Stuart Room in the Maree Hotel by providing copies of the 5 story boards included in the Stuart Collection and the reproduction of 3 sketches by JFAD (David) Hergott who accompanied Stuart, and 2 sketches by Benjamin Herschel Babbage. 3. The conservation by Artlab, of the plaque on the Adina Hotel (former Treasury Building). Annual events included the 53rd Annual General Meeting of the Society, the 52nd Annual Remembrance Ceremony held on 23rd July at Stuart's statue followed by a guided tour by the National Trust of South Australia of the Old treasury and Tunnels, located in the Adina Hotel. We also provided guided tours of the Stuart Collection in the Adelaide Masonic Centre during Adelaide's History Festival in May.

05.01.2022 The president, Rick Moore and the committee of the John McDouall Stuart Society Inc. are disappointed to announce the postponement of our 2020 Annual Remembrance Ceremony, Annual General Meeting and Memorial Address due to COVID-19 bans and restrictions placed on public gatherings, and concerns for our members’ health. We are hopeful these events will occur later this year and will inform you of a new date as soon as we can. In the meantime, please take care and stay safe.

02.01.2022 This is Elizabeth Springs, Oodnadatta Track, far north of South Australia. When Stuart discovered these springs in May 1859, he noted that "there is enough water running to drive a flour mill in two or three places". We know that pressure and volume of spring water fluctuates, but there's just a trickle now-a-days. Note the 4WD's near top right of picture, behind and to the left of which is the Jersey Spring complex, near the light coloured line of breakaways. Jersey was one of Stuart's favourite horses. On the skyline, left of centre and above Jersey Spring is the prominent Beresford Hill - an ancient and extinct mound spring.
