21.01.2022 NT to kick-off football restart in - very appropriate beginning as the NTYappas, indigenous women’s team, restart domestic football. Watch tonight Timely, too, for the game to recognise its failure to respect and support indigenous Australia over many decades and to commit to a national RAP, strategy, and representation for indigenous Australia thru ... In 2016, as Chair of the PFA, we ensured that indigenous Australians would always be represented at Executive, or Board level of the player representative body, along with gender equality. The amazing Lydia Williams has developed into a considerable force as a leading member of the organisation on behalf of her colleagues. Indigenous Australians should be represented at every decision making level of the game. Looking forward very much to tonight’s game and to seeing the brilliant Yappas again. 08.01.2022 Today we remember the untimely passing sixteen years ago of Australian icon #JohnnyWarren OAM MBE (1943-2004). #IToldYouSo #Football legend Johnny Warren was the face of football in Australia. A player, coach, administrator, writer and broadcaster, Warren was a tireless advocate of the ‘world game’. ... Warren represented Australia with the #socceroos on forty-two occasions, including Australia’s only appearance in the World Cup finals in 1974 and captained the team between 1967 and 1970. His service to football was recognised in 1974 when he became a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). After injury forced his retirement, Warren became a successful coach, later concentrating his efforts on the promotion of football through junior coaching schools and the Sydney City Club. He became a respected commentator on national broadcaster #SBS. In 2002, Warren was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to football as a player, coach and journalist. He also published a best selling book, ‘Sheilas, Wogs and Poofters, an Incomplete Biography of Johnny Warren and Soccer in Australia’ which traced the games growth in Australia. In 2004 Warren became the only Australian to receive the prestigious #FIFA Centennial Order of Merit. After a battle with cancer Johnny Warren died in 2004. He was posthumously granted a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Australian Sports Commission. (National Portrait Gallery 2008) Johnny left an indelible mark on Australian football and Australian society more broadly. We hope you take a moment to #RememberJohnny today.
