01.01.2022 I am a qualified marriage celebrant. I am a gay man. I cant legally enjoy the same right that I have the very qualification to perform. Ironic and ridiculous i...snt it? There is a certain wonder that is almost unexplainable that goes with standing before a couple as they publicly (and legally) commit themselves to each other. Its truly magical and quite honestly one of my favourite things to do. I kind of fell into the wedding industry (Brenton and Liam, Alinta and Rem, Im looking at you!) and Im so glad and grateful for it every time I perform a ceremony. I love it. All of it. The initial meeting, the writing of the ceremony, the stressed phone calls, the rehearsal, the arrivals, the vows, the nerves, the tears, the giggles... all of it. Its electric and real and a true moment in time. I believe in it with all of my heart. People often ask me if I find it hard to be a celebrant knowing I cant get married myself. I always defer my answer with a joke, some sass or a self deprecating comment usually involving the fact I havent met the man I want to marry just yet or that no ones asked... classic me . Well heres the truth. Yes I find it hard. But mostly I find it stupid. Really fucking stupid, very backward and highly embarrassing... and my experience is that so did every single couple Ive married. Every single couple. There is always an awkward conversation that exists around what I legally have to say (I wont write it here because writing it gives it power). It brings me joy to say I have witnessed some incredible and inventive public ways around those hideous, dated and stupid words. There are too many to mention but the covering of ears, the unplugging of microphones or the time the groom just took over for a few moments to say how those words were ridiculous spring to mind as wonderful ways around it. A celebrant must never discriminate when meeting with a potential couple. We are taught that our own views on marriage must not colour a couples ceremony (unlike some religious institutions). I agree. However, in light of the last few days of disgusting Australian politics I am saying publicly here on an open social platform, because I just cant stay quiet anymore, that in relation to marriage equality in Australia I can no longer adhere to this rule and therefore I may be viewed as discriminatory.* Let me be clear... I AM NO LONGER INTERESTED IN MEETING WITH OR MARRYING ANYONE WHO DOESNT SUPPORT MARRIAGE EQUALITY. *If this counts as discriminatory (and it will to some celebrant organisations and members of the Attorney Generals Department) then take away my license.
