22.01.2022 Year 9 SAASTA Connect Over the last three weeks the year 9 SAASTA Connect class has be engaging in workshops with local Aboriginal artists. Students have used techniques learnt in these workshops to create their own piece as an assessment item.
21.01.2022 YEAR 9 SCIENCE This semester, the students in Miss Tsouvalas’ science class have been learning about biological sciences. Earlier this term, the students learnt how to make terrariums as part of an ecosystems unit. The purpose of this task was to make a terrarium as a model of an ecosystem and identify the biotic and abiotic factors operating within it. ... The terrariums were left on the window seals for a few weeks to see which plants managed to survive. In the latter part of the semester, students were introduced to body systems and undertook a sheep brain dissection. The brain is part of the body’s central nervous system and by dissecting a sheep’s brain, they were able to gain an appreciation for the complexity of the brain. Students made observations and identified the different structures of the brain.
19.01.2022 TASTE OF HIGH SCHOOL UPDATE The two Year 7 and 8 Taste of High School transition days on Wednesday and Thursday are proceeding as planned. Last Thursday a letter was posted to our school’s Facebook page and the Facebook pages of Primary Schools. We have attached this document again here. ... The basic information you need to know is: Students need to arrive no later than 8:45am and must make their way to the grassed area at the front of the school. Students will be dismissed at 3:15pm. Students need to wear their Primary School uniform. Students must bring their own lunch and recess OR purchase it from the school canteen. If your child is not attending either or both of the Taste of High School days please call JPSS Student Services on 8632 0415 or 8632 0416 to report your child’s absence. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Parents/Caregivers will not be permitted to enter the school grounds. We look forward to seeing our new Year 7 and 8 students tomorrow morning!

15.01.2022 Room 742 (Ms. Akker) hit the ground the running. In Science we all sat down and brainstormed Science words for our Science word wall. We also completed a getting to know you information task on mandalas as part of our classroom display.
15.01.2022 TASTE OF HIGH SCHOOL - Day 2 This morning saw students head out the oval where they were involved in a mini soccer tournament. Students played several mini games against each other. ... A big thank you to the students of the JPSS Soccer Academy who helped set up equipment and run the competition.
12.01.2022 YEAR 7/8 TRANSITION - "A TASTE OF HIGH SCHOOL" This morning saw year 6/7 students arrive at John Pirie Secondary School for the first of two transition days. Students gathered at the front of school before heading to the gym to be formally introduced to our Principal Mr. Roger Nottage.
11.01.2022 ALC Quicksmart Today we had a celebration in the Aboriginal Learning Centre (ALC) to acknowledge the progress and achievement of all students who have been involved in the ATSI Quicksmart Program. All students involved should be extremely proud of what they have achieved this year. ... A huge shout out to Liz Sgherza and Carolyn Fraser who have worked hard to implement the Quicksmart Program within the ALC. Well Done!!
11.01.2022 YONDR POUCHES Tomorrow students in Year 7-9 will be receiving their Yondr pouches. On Wednesday staff from Yondr will be onsite to talk with staff and students about the purpose of the pouches.

09.01.2022 STAGE 1 - ENGLISH On the 4th of November Miss Di Fiore’s Stage 1 English class travelled to Gladstone Gaol. Students were presented with an opportunity to learn about the lives of past inmates, where they wrote an imaginative recount from their perspective. ... Students were able to communicate with a range of different staff at Gladstone Gaol, as well as researching further on their chosen inmate.
09.01.2022 A TASTE OF HIGH SCHOOL After their soccer competition students returned to the classroom to get a taste of what high school has to offer. Groups were given a tour of our fabulous Urumbula Garden and Mural, then were given a chance to create an animals habitat using natural materials.... Students again got to discover the cooking facilities and whip up some delicious chocolate crackles. Art class was also on the agenda for today as students were set the task to draw and shade different objects. John Pirie Secondary School would like to thank ALL students who made the effort to attend and participate in the last 2 days of activities. We wish you all the best for the remainder of the year, and look forward to seeing you all in 2021.
08.01.2022 YEAR 6/7 TRANSITION "A TASTE OF HIGH SCHOOL" Students have settled into transition well, some students have been lucky enough to work the kitchen and were able to make some chocolate crackles. ... While others have had the chance to visit the FLIPS Centre, STEM Centre, and Tech Studies.
06.01.2022 741 (Samarah Wark) and 882 (Mellisa John) Week 1 has been a big week in 741 and 882! We have been busy getting to know each other, meeting our new teachers and creating our classroom agreement. 741 have also started learning some chords on the guitar in Music today.
