25.01.2022 Upper Castra State School from The Weekly Courier 1905 Scholars and Head Teacher Mr RA Smith with Miss Pettit assistant. Too early for our Johns families, but great photo of the school.

25.01.2022 This is great news !!

25.01.2022 Sharing the story of the Unknown Warrior, Westminster Abbey, London. History was made 100 years ago this week, 1920 (Click on each photo to read more clearly)

25.01.2022 A couple of the (comical) postcards kept by Ivy Johns ( Ewington) Click on each to view.

24.01.2022 These photos also found in Ivy’s collection. Taken I would suggest WW1 and by Ted Ewington as he served in the Light Horse in the Middle East. Only inscription is of the soldiers in the cat and just says Some Friends.

24.01.2022 No relation here but a great story! Some Launceston cousins might know him.

21.01.2022 Rita Dean was the 'kindest' secondary school teacher I encountered at BHS. She shared life experiences. She was my Year 8 English teacher and I remember some of her stories, including one about a car accident in which she was involved) in incredible detail. Mrs Ruffles was my teacher in Years 9 and 10 and I didn't so much like her, as respect her. She taught me many things and really pushed me intellectually. Teachers don't always realise the impact that they have upon the lives of others (but I'm sure that you totally get that.) Sharing this post by Ian Murray from Cooee Connections. Nice compliments for Rita Dean née Johns. Ian went on to become a teacher. ( someone might show this to Rita)

21.01.2022 Great day out Thursday to Upper Castra. Beryl Goodwin and Len Johns guided us around the area their respective parents George and Sid Johns farmed on their Soldier Settlement farms.

20.01.2022 Wonderful views from Mt Roland to Black Bluff, then back up the road towards Upper Castra. Beryl remembered walking up that way to school, about a mile and a half, passing the Church of England near the junction of Baxter’s Road and Castra Road.

17.01.2022 Also interesting, the history of Australia’s Unknown Soldier.

15.01.2022 This was an invitation to George Ewington, who after the war married Ivy Johns, to whom we are grateful for saving all these cards. George Johns possibly attended this dinner as well as he was also in the 3rd Light Horse. It was held at Hadley’s Hotel Hobart 4th August 1921 , the 5th Anniversary of the Battle of Romani, Sinai Peninsula, Egypt.

03.01.2022 Found a link yesterday to do with the Soldier Settlement Scheme. I had posted previously information on Robert, George and Sid Johns signing up to this scheme. The new link was to do with the building of a house on their property. But I could only find forms for Sid, or so I thought until I printed them off! There was a letter re Mr G Johns dated March 1924. A great find was a hand written letter from Sid, Jan 27 1921, advising he was soon to be married - July 5 1921.

03.01.2022 Three years ago we honoured John (Jack) Johns when a plaque was placed on his parents grave at Ulverstone. Jack paid the Supreme Sacrifice on April 15 1917

01.01.2022 Map showing properties at Upper Castra from about 1920 to 1965. Unlike other maps I have seen it doesnt show in particular which properties which are Soldier Settlement farms. Note down the extreme right hand side Geo Reg on Plot No 1 is George Reginald Johns and underneath is Les - referring to Les Fisher who leased this farm before George.
