04.01.2022 In the spirit of All Hallows’ Day, today we remember the dead... our namesakes Mr Johnston & Mr Miller. After immigrating from Scotland to Australia in 1884 and initially working in Melbourne, John Ross Johnston met James Miller in Hobart around 1892. The two gentlemen formed a friendship, which resulted in a decision to open a general department store on 21 February 1903. ... The store was called Johnston and Miller, and we chose to honour the history of these fine men when we opened our store in 2018. The two went on to build a very successful business and when it became a proprietary company Mr Johnston became the Executive Director and Mr Miller a Director. On Mr Johnston’s retirement, his son John Allan took over the management of the store until it was sold to Myers in the 1960s. James Miller died aged 73 in 1940. John Ross Johnston died aged 92 in 1957.
