In 2020 Michael was awarded the UNSW School of Arts and Media Alumni residency to develop a new body of work for the trio under the mentorship of Dr. Alister Spence & Dr. Sandy Evans. 14.01.2022 Born out of lockdown and from a desire to perform again with old friends, Matt has assembled some of his favourite musicians for this exciting new project. 11.01.2022 "In simple words, making music brings extreme happiness and helps to feed and nurture young peoples creativity in so many positive ways." Johnston Street Jazz recognises the significance of a musical education within a child's life. We acknowledge the impact COVID-19 has had on Australia's youth and their ability to access their creative outlets.... The petition below urges the State Government to review their restrictions on certain instruments and in turn devise a system that allows the safety of our students and their musical education to coincide. https://www.change.org/p/gladys-berejiklian-kids-need-music
11.01.2022 Bursting out from a week in the studio with a wild mix of jazz, fusion, folk, funk and intricate songwriting, Emily-Rose and the Wild Things are led by songstress and keys player Emily-Rose Sarkova and deliver an earthy and profound fusion of acoustic and electric worlds. Complex grooves, catchy riffs and caramel textures underpin intricate, relevant lyrics of weight and beauty.

He was intelligent and exceptional person & musician. I booked him for JSJ May 17th 2018 and below is the drawing l did of him, as he played live, this night was recorded by Peter Nelsen. We saw him in audience Jan 23rd, 2020 for Elisabeth Harnik concert. So glad we sat & chat & laughed together. R.I.P

10.01.2022 I was at the wonderful workshop of luthier Mr Craig Corcoran yesterday, picking up some work he had finished, when i was reminded of the excellent job he did of... restoring my 70s American PBass a few years ago, an instrument my father found at a garage sale in Bingara around 1999 for $40. We also talked about a time when i was unable to do a gig with him due to me having pneumonia, not something out of the ordinary, in which i also remembered i was requested by another artist to play with them during that time, and due to me not being able to, i found later i was being described by them to others as 'unprofessional' and 'unreliable'. In the last few months ive been meeting with different artists from various parts of the industry to develop a broad understanding of common issues faced by NSW musicians, with the purpose of lobbying to both State and Local governments to build awareness and support for the music community. If youre a musician who has been penalised in any capacity for things like being sick, being unavailable, looking after others who are sick, or simply not being paid for what ever reason, please feel free to contact me, email, phone call or grab a coffee, are all equally as fine. Also please share around your networks. Common problems often have common solutions, which during the current dark times times for live music globally, may be a step in the right direction. See more
09.01.2022 New review of last weeks gig written by John Shand in the Sydney Morning Herald.
09.01.2022 Years of teaching at the Sydney Conservatorium have made Kevin one of our most influential jazz musicians. A teacher who has spent his life learning, an instructor who listens as hard as he talks, a wonderfully generous man who has helped generations of musicians grow their best skills. Kevin Hunt (piano) Karl Dunnicliff (double bass) Dave Goodman (drums)

04.01.2022 Happy birthday James, from the Johnston St Jazz crew
03.01.2022 The duo is perhaps one of the most exposed types performing - intimate dialogue, unmasking, connection and freedom to let the music go ( or take you ) where it pleases. At Johnston St Jazz we've always loved presenting duets, and we were very excited about this one. Gary says "We play paired back, intimate versions of original music from our respective bands ie Bungarribee, Greening From Ear To Ear and The Catholics. Also some classical music ie arrangements of pieces by Eric Satie & maybe Bach ( if we can get it together) Shared passion for improvisation of course."
01.01.2022 Stu says... "This is a time when we are reminded daily of the perils of our existence. The new normal is to constantly face tough and scary truths. To keep the balance we must also see - the beautiful things. Mine may be different to yours, but I believe we can walk the same line without blocking each other’s view.... I hope this music might create a space to help remind us what is possible. The Australian said... Hunter's compositions provide a great variety of structural form, as if every creative concept from jazz beginnings to the avant-garde, mixed with a universe of other influences, had been deconstructed and reassembled into an original, utterly absorbing work. Stu has released 3 critically acclaimed and incredibly beautiful ensemble records under his own name ‘The Muse’, ‘The Gathering’ and ‘The Migration’. It's rare to hear him solo. You can watch for free, but please pay Stu for his excellent work. 100% goes to him.
