25.01.2022 Posture and Rules - There are plenty of rules on posture and I am sure that some come to mind immediately but the most popular one is "sit up straight". While this is well meaning it is difficult to do. What is much easier is to slump and let everything relax - let your body go with gravity. Give yourself a break, take a slump and feel the difference.
24.01.2022 What is osteopathy Osteopathy is a hands on approach to healthcare that recognises the importance between the structures of your body and the way it works. For more information visit our website.
24.01.2022 High heels and horse racing - it is a popular combination for many female race goers and with the Albury Gold Cup almost upon us what can you do to ease the stress and strain associated with wearing high heels? It is important to have breaks during the day and one of the best ways is to remove your shoes and walk on the grass. This will help your joints and soft tissue to recover from the stresses and strain. It will also help stimulate the pads of your feet and therefore the soft tissue and nerves associated with your feet. Finally, adopt the saying "take the load off your feet", try not to stand up all day.
23.01.2022 It really is that time of the year - do I wear something warm, take a coat or risk it by wearing something a little cooler? Well it is hard to know although in a sporting context it is wise if you stop for any length of time, either at training or on game day, to keep a jacket close by. Often players have a break and are required to deal with the elements with very little protection. So remember once you have warmed up stay warm to help prevent injury.
21.01.2022 Neck stiffness and pain - I was reminded the other day about the connection between our head and trunk movements. Often we consider that our stiffness is confined to our neck but more often it is associated with stiffness arising in our trunk and beyond. For example, if you call out to a child her response is to look around, not only by turning her head, but this movement involves her trunk, hips and even down to her feet. As we get older we alter this connection and by doing so we place more strain on our necks. How do you turn around?
16.01.2022 Exercise - Just recently I watched a show on TV called Insight and one of the guests was Dr Michael Moseley who is an English journalist and doctor. The theme was exercise and he noted 3 activities that are beneficial - Squats, Pushups and Standing on 1 leg. So how does that work? Squats and pushups are termed Closed Kinetic Chain activities where a number of joints are interdependent, for example a pushup requires movement at the wrist, elbow and shoulders for the activity to occur. Therefore pushups and squats require movement at many joints. Throw in standing on 1 leg, to engage balance, and you have a well rounded workout. Osteopathy working with you, phone for an appointment on Mob 0413804526.
14.01.2022 Feet are made for Walking but how often do we walk without some type of footwear covering our feet. Would we cover our hands in the same way as we do our feet? Like our hands our feet are very sensitive, the Egyptians and Chinese recognized this with what we know as reflexology and acupuncture points respectively. So let's stimulate those sensors and take the opportunity to go bare foot on sand, on grass, dip them in water and if you really want to wake them up try walking on stones. Give your feet what they need, different experiences - remember "variety is the spice of life"!
08.01.2022 People often ask, why is it important to have good pelvic balance? Simply it is the area in the body where forces are transferred from above and below. The sacrum forms an integral part of this force transference and according it is likened to a keystone in an arch. Therefore should pelvic imbalance occur it can affect the function of muscles and joints above and below the pelvis. That is why as an Osteopaths I assess and treat pelvic asymmetry as a core diagnostic approach.
08.01.2022 Pain and the Brain - At one level it is a difficult concept to take on board but at another level it make sense for survival. The book Explain Pain (Butler and Moseley) was first published in 2003. In Explain Pain there are stories about amazing feats where people have had horrendous injuries but felt no pain. We have all had similar incidents, perhaps to a lesser extent, where we have noticed a bruise but we couldn't remember how it got there. Pain is about protection, we have sensors in our body that send messages to the brain and the brain must decide whether we are in danger. This process determines whether or not a pain signal is sent. Without pain survival is compromised.
06.01.2022 Is appropriate to start an assessment with the feet?
05.01.2022 Walking and Running - Observing people walk and run can be a little dangerous for manual therapists. Why? Because it is easy to jump to conclusions and often those conclusions may not be correct. Observation might reflect that a person weight bears on one foot more than the other or they swing their leg rather than flexing their hip, but in itself this does not mean that they are in pain or discomfort. It is only when the person's compensatory mechanisms begin to fatigue that... problems occur. Is your musculoskeletal system operating at a level that will allow you to participate in the activities you enjoy? Contact me appointment on Mob 0413 804 526.
04.01.2022 Group activity - what are the advantages? There is this term Synergy, that proposes that the whole is greater than its individual parts. I see group activity very much like this. In a group individuals become more active, their motivation is often greater, there is a sense of belonging and participants are usually very supportive of one another. Feel free to contact me for a postural assessment.

03.01.2022 Christmas and Sitting - It is the time to relax however we often associate relaxing with sitting / slumping in what we consider a comfortable chair, don't be caught out it's an illusion. Remember the less area of support the greater pressure, for example if you slump in a chair with your legs crossed, most of the pressure is on 1 sitting bone. Hints: try not to cross your legs, try to sit towards the edge of the chair; sit on the floor if you can and move often!!! Happy Christmas
