24.01.2022 We feel truly honoured to have received three Architecture awards for Phoenix Central Park at the NSW AIA Awards this evening. . Winner of the Sir Arthur G Stephenson Award for Commercial Architecture, the John Verge Award for Interior Architecture and the NSW Architecture Medallion. . In the jury’s words, in the case of Phoenix Central Park, two great architects are working at their best; an enlightened collaboration inspired by a deep mutual respect and even deeper desire ...to exceed the aspirations of the other. Enormous skill is required to navigate the privileged position of honouring a great client. . This project has certainly been a story of collaboration and we are grateful to Judith Neilson for embarking on this journey with us and @durbachblockjaggers with a remarkably simple yet open brief that invited us to create something that seemed to have no boundaries. @martinmischkulnig @ Sydney, Australia

22.01.2022 We're delighted to reveal our designs for the new Bendigo Law Courts which will transform the delivery of justice in the Bendigo and Loddon Mallee region. The new building clad in copper will sit above the surrounding built form of Bendigo, joining the silhouette of steeples and clock towers. . A human centred design approach has been adopted, recognising that attending court can be a stressful experience. The building is legible upon approach with clearly expressed entries and intuitive way finding. A soft and calming materials palette is used and spaces are filled with natural daylight. The character of each courtroom differs slightly, yet each is invested with an appropriate degree of gravitas.

20.01.2022 We feel truly honoured to have received three named awards at the National Architecture Awards 2020. . Phoenix Central Park received the Harry Seidler Award for Commercial Architecture and the Emil Sodersten Award for Interior Architecture, and Ian Potter Southbank Centre received the Daryl Jackson Award for Educational Architecture. We are immensely proud of these two projects and the many hands that brought them to life. . We thank the @institute_architects_aus an...d the jurors for their deliberations and generous words. . "Ian Potter Southbank Centre is an ingenious arrangement... The project has already demonstrated how generosity and richness of materials and detail can heighten the joy of participation in learning." - Educational Architecture Jury . "Here, two architectural practices have collaborated, at a conscious but also an instinctive level, to produce one masterwork... The project is both ambitious and free-spirited, representing an unprecedented moment in architectural patronage." - Interior Architecture Jury @vca_mcm @unimelb @lendlease @inax.official @jacarandaindustries @durbachblockjaggers @fdc_group @favettibricklaying @krausebricks @ttwengineers @whitehotrabbit See more

18.01.2022 "While moving through the galleries, you are repeatedly invited to step onto sculpted timber rostra that push out into voids... These platforms temporarily draw you away from the work at hand and tempt you to peer into galleries beside, below and above you piquing curiosity and building anticipation of the path ahead." Originally published in Architecture Australia Sept/Oct 2020 with a wonderfully thoughtful piece by Laura Harding and her curious glimpse into Phoenix ...Central Park. The project is currently shortlisted in the @Dezeen Awards 2020 for Cultural Building of the Year. @architecture_au @durbachblockjaggers @fdc_group @favettibricklaying @krausebricks @ttwengineers @whitehotrabbit @trevormein See more

17.01.2022 In our 7th week working at home and still continuing our efforts to bridge the social and technological distances between staff, we're also reminiscing about another bridge - one we made during our most recent Bruny Making weekend. . Our team was tasked with making a stone step bridge. The preparation, collaboration and banter across the weekend reinforced the importance of the communication platforms we are now so especially reliant upon as individual authorship was ceded ...to a longer-term vision. . The bridge's successful completion was achieved through communication, enthusiasm and of course some heavy lifting, aided in no small part by the muscle and no-nonsense stone cutting of Waterview managers - Jayson and Leigh, along with the friendly company of Roxy the dog. @crerar_photos_words @ Bruny Island Tasmania See more

17.01.2022 Sunset over the recently completed Geelong College Junior School. The design for the new facilities draws upon the school’s pedagogies inspired in approach by the Reggio Emilia philosophy which considers the environment to be the third teacher. The zigzag form retains existing site trees and brings south light into all the learning environments. A continuous verandah links each year level community, promoting shared outdoor spaces for learning and social play. 15.01.2022 Featured in the July issue of The Journal of Australian Ceramics is one of the projects completed on our Bruny Making trips over the summer. We invited local award-winning potters Ben and Peta Richardson of @ridgelinepottery to join us on this venture an ambitious double-skinned step kiln with glazed bricks, situated on the sloping land at Waterview. . Square bricks and a round geometry that tapered presented challenges in design and in construction. The momentum of m...aking over a couple of days meant ideas needed to be tested in a compressed manner. The result is a beautiful kiln that stands ready to be trialled, the practice of firing clay a potential new skill to be learned by the JWA team on a future Bruny Making weekend. @crerar_photos_words See the link in our bio to purchase a copy of the magazine, or visit @australianceramics for more info. We thank Klynton Krause & @krausebricks for supplying an abundance of bricks in varying tapers and colours. @ Bruny Island Tasmania

15.01.2022 We're delighted to have three projects shortlisted in the Australian Institute of Architects Victorian Awards 2020! . Holme Apartments are inspired by the immediate context of the silos that once dominated Collingwood’s skyline. Scalloped balconies sweep around the perimeter with the concave form representing the negative mould of a silo. Original brickwork of a 1920’s art deco style brick warehouse has been maintained and extended upon to create the tower's podium. ... 1-2 @melbournephotographer 3 @dylanjamesphoto 4-7 @seanfennessy Congratulations to the team: @cbusproperty @hacergroup @urbis_au @plp_buildingsurveyors @wsp_australia #johnwardlearchitects #architecture #australianarchitecture #architecturephotography #architect #holmeapartments @ Collingwood, Victoria, Australia See more

11.01.2022 We're excited to share our designs for the refurbishment of 477 Pitt Street - a 32 storey commercial tower which occupies a rare whole-of-island site to the south of Sydney's CBD. . Adjacent to the technology precinct, the new works will transform existing commercial assets into enlivened contemporary workplaces and shared amenity through a series of strategic interventions. . Originally built in 1992, 477 Pitt Street has proven to be extremely adaptable, having unde...rgone a number of redevelopments over its lifetime. This latest design will create a new building identity, whilst celebrating its history and the merits of adapting existing architecture rather than rebuilding. . 09.01.2022 In 2017, widely acclaimed artist Rosslynd Piggott was a guest speaker for JWA and Spacecraft Studio’s On Top of the World talk series, designing a flag to sit atop our Rokeby Street Studio. Its floral design is a tribute to a set of three flags created by Piggott and Spacecraft for the RBGV in 2013. The flag has been generously donated to our Bushfire Recovery Auction by Rosslynd Piggott and will be signed by the artist. . Today is the last day of our auction which draws to a close at 5pm AEST. 03.01.2022 A huge thank you to everyone who has been involved in our Bushfire Recovery Project, both in our auction and direct giving. We currently have tallied $113,520 but thanks to the ongoing generous support of the community the figure keeps growing. This figure is an incredible achievement that will go a long way toward helping preserve our critical biodiversity. From the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria... "All plant species above are endangered or critically endangered species, known in regions of Victoria that have been severely impacted by the recent bushfires. With some having no seed stock in our Victorian Conservation Seedbank, if we lose these plants they will be lost forever. The Biodiversity Recovery Project will support our botanists and horticulturists to undertake critical field trips to collect seeds and plant materials from these regions. These plant materials will be brought back to our specialist nurseries to be propagated and, when ready, used to regenerate native habitats. Seeds will be collected and stored in the Victorian Conservation Seedbank, ensuring that any future environmental emergencies won’t come at the cost of our precious biodiversity." @royalbotanicgardensvic See more
