22.01.2022 Sometimes you have to learn lessons the hard way... 1yr ago a national news company offered to feature my business in their local publications. They had seen the public response to my school holiday workshops & felt it was perfect content for their whats on feature. My business would have professional & dynamic photos taken, everyone in Brisbane would read about the workshops & it would be a huge advantage for me to have them do this. In my naivety I did not understa...nd that this was not an exchange, but a donation. It was not clear to me that I would have no right to use the content created featuring my face or my product. In their equation, the time spent by my business to create the product, muster the kiddos, sit for the shoot etc was my contribution to them affecting widespread take up of my school holiday workshops. Your workshops will sell out for sure! was the golden carrot. The following school holidays, while being advised I couldnt reproduce any of the content, my workshops sat empty... 75% of them cancelled & the other 25% attended poorly. Now technically, , the news company had not broken our agreement, & I awkwardly realised that I was the one in error. I didnt grasp the vastly imbalanced exchange. I failed to notice that they had promised a gamble. I agreed to provide usable, tangible product & they agreed to use it. Plain & simple. But thats life You learn & you let go...but you dont let go of the lesson, & hopefully this little post will save you from learning it the hard way too Ive learnt to be more measured... to require a fair exchange of tangible product. If youre new to small business, if youre just starting out showing the world the magic that only you can create- be careful that the lure of exposure doesnt just result in others dining out on your buck. Know your worth, & dont be afraid to charge it. Every time you are offered exposure, ask that friend, that school committee, that influencer, to put some skin in the game too.
