22.01.2022 MasterCote Almonds With the high input cost of establishing a new almond orchard, Agspec has taken some careful and thoughtful consideration into areas where nutrient inputs can be reduced thus mitigating the overall establishment cost and limiting nutrient wastage. MasterCote is a controlled release fertilizer which offers a variety of nutrient formulas for controlled release nutrition in horticulture. A (6) month compound formula with a nutrient makeup of 11:4.8:13.3 + M...icro Elements is suggested on newly planted almond trees. Other formulas are available which is dependent on soil type, length of release and region. Young almond trees are generally planted from July through to Spring at approximately 290 trees per hectare with double line drip. The almond trees going in essentially have a very limited root volume and the need to fertilize through all the drippers onto non-targeted zones makes it unnecessary. Since MasterCote is polymer coated it is best to prepare the hole and place the MasterCote at the bottom and cover this with a small amount of soil while back-filling the hole. The ideal temperature for consistent release is at 21C based on the Sigmoidal model. If roots come into contact with MasterCote it will not burn the roots. Temperatures at 300 mm soil depth increase over time with an average of 21C being achieved in mid-late October and steadily increasing thereafter with an average recorded up until the 20th of February a 26C.
