13.01.2022 Sent this to the papers and politicians today as a suggested way forward. We are in the midst of the worst drought we have ever faced and as a dairy farmer it is devastating to see the industry I love being decimated and the number of cows being sold by farmers, dreams and hopes being crushed, and businesses in towns that rely on the dairy industry to survive, closing down. We need help NOW to survive or there will not be an industry, and the country will be importing milk. ...In the past week we have sent emails to every politician in Australia, spoken to some, had face to face meetings with others, and contacted industry leaders. It is hard to get politicians to appreciate the urgency and size of the problem. I believe we need a short and long term approach. Short term, in order to survive, we need a fodder subsidy on and $1 for $1 basis to all farmers in drought declared areas, back dated to 1ST January 2019. This would help farmers to keep going until things improve. Long term we need an increase of $1 per kilogram milk solids which is then tied to the CPI, so we can keep pace with the cost of inputs. Secondly there needs to be a cap put on the price of temporary water, $250 per mega litre, again tied to the CPI, and carryover water needs to stop. This will stop scalpers buying temporary water and profiteering from exorbitant prices, it would also deter big corporate farms, wealthy individuals and super funds buying large parcels of temporary water to resell. If the government can outlaw scalpers and profiteering on sporting finals and concert tickets, then why not water, because this is exactly what is happening. This measure would put water back within reach of food producers and I believe slow the ever increasing price of permanent water. In conjunction with these measures I believe the government needs to put a moratorium on further development of big tree farms, olives, almonds and grapes and the likes that are tapping into existing water storages that are not being expanded to cope. I hear that a large Chinese winery has recently spent $75m to develop their business with the view to send all the wine back to China. It needs to be realised that it has been the dairy industry that has footed the bill for much of the infrastructure in the Goulburn Valley, the towns and development are a product of the industry. It is time our politicians realise it is not about who has the biggest cheque book, and took a reality check and started putting Australians first. Is this the sort of Australia we want? Importing our food without the control we previously have been fortunate enough to have in this country, I think not, if you are concerned please contact your local member and tell them we need action NOW.

05.01.2022 Had a couple turn up unannounced on the farm today told me they wanted a stickybeak? after I picked myself up off the ground I tried to politely explain that wouldnt be possible and to point them in the direction of the gate, undeterred, they moved towards the dairy until their white sneakers started getting dirt on them and they changed their mind. I wonder what they would do if they found me wandering around their back yard or garage??

02.01.2022 We welcome to Calvin to the Bendigo team, great job first week in Calvin, great to have you on board.
