18.01.2022 RIDDLE OF THE SPHINX @North Curl Curl NSW SINGLE (on film) One of my favourite spots for Astro shooting in the vicinity of Sydney is this rock pool with the rock formation that just looks like Sphinx. This image was shot in June after the lockdown was lifted. Airplane trails could normally have been worse but it was not too bad because there was not much air traffic due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the bottom of the image, you could notice my other view camera 4x5 doing its w...ork. I normally wrap the camera with a cloth to protect the camera from dust and salty moisture. ENJOY the VIEW! 17.01.2022 @Paul Wild Observatory - Narrabri I think, with no doubt, this observatory has been a hot spot for astrophotography for the past few years. I visited this observatory many times myself and managed to create extraordinary milky way images that I am happy with and received good feedback from others. This is one of the few star trail images taken on film here. It is not easy to create star trail images with something moving on the ground. I think the Planar lens on my Rolleiflex... performed exceptionally well considering the number of other photographers using torches and wandering around the telescopes for about 4 hours. It was one of the opening nights for photographers at the observatory this year. Enjoy the View! 17.01.2022 PANORAMA @Bombo Headland Quarry NSW This particular spot where I took this shot is only accessible during low tide only. Otherwise, you have to endanger your life for a shot. I actually prefer to take milky way shots at Bombo during the early season between March and June when milky way rises from the sea level. This is my second attempt to take milky way shots at this spot during the late season when the galaxy sets over the south-western night sky. Hope you enjoy the view.... 16.01.2022 @Brooklyn, New South Wales SINGLE (on film) Since I gave up carrying the heavy Linhof Super Technika III 4x5 large format camera and started using a much lighter wooden field camera 4x5, I was able to carry two film cameras on top of my usual digital, Canon 6D. Those two film cameras are the wooden large format and Rolleiflex 2.8C 6x6 medium format. An image of star trails taken here at the boat ramp in Brooklyn with the large format was posted earlier and this is taken on th...e same night with Rolleiflex for comparison. I love the impression of the image that the foreground looks like an oil painting. ENJOY! 16.01.2022 @Waverley, New South Wales, Australia SINGLE (on film) I was quite surprised to see this greenish-blue sky on this image taken with Kodak Ektar 100 whereas the sky is usually purplish-blue when taken with Fujichrome Provia slides. I might have to stop down a bit more when shooting film here again next time. I wish The sky was a bit darker. The red and yellow light trails should have been wavy if people passed by holding a torch. But the light trails are straight which means t...hat I think a biker might have passed in front of my camera while I was resting in my car. I like them on my mage even if it was not my intention. 12.01.2022 Galaxy Rising @Aries Tor, Mt Kosciuszko, Australia PANORAMA (with 2 rows of 8 x horizontal shots each = 16 shots) I just can't resist taking milky way arch panorama when shooting out Astro. You can see the whole milky way stretching from the east to the west. The bright horizon in between two granite formations is not light pollution as you may think. The image was taken at 5.30am just about an hour prior to sunrise. So the horizon is getting orangish-yellow and the zodiacal ...light is evident from the core down to the horizon. And the sky is bluer as well. Enjoy the View! 11.01.2022 Aries Tor @Thredbo, Snowy Mountains, Mt Kosciuszko National Park Nsw SINGLE (film) Rolleiflex 2.8C, Carl Zeiss Planar 80mm Fujichorome Provia ISO100F Slide 120mm... taken @f11, about 2 hours exposed developed at local LAB & scanned with Epson V800 & post-processed in PS. Finally, I got to see the image after four months wait. This film image was shot in February 2020 prior to the COVID-19 isolation. I was not able to go to my local lab for processing more than 10 sheets of 4X5 large format film and one roll of 120mm medium format film due to the isolation. Right after the trip in February, I was happy to get a number of digital images of the milky way, which I think are beautiful, from the first visit. Now I have seen the film image and I am feeling like walking on the moon, thanks to my son who had accompanied me on the trip. On the night of the shooting, my heart almost sank when I stepped out to see the fog covering all over the mountains. I previously set my camera prior to sunset and rested in the tent to wait until it gets dark. I was so disappointed but couldn't do anything rather than cursing my weather app. I waited for an hour or two in the tent. I think it was about 11ish I stepped out and found the perfect crystal clear night sky I've never seen in my life. 10.01.2022 Rising Together with Moon II SINGLE - Film Star Trails @Bombo Headland NSW This is another film star trail image shot with Rolleiflex on the same night as the 4x5 large format when the milky way was rising together with a quarter moon. The previous image shot with 4x5 large format on Kodak Ektar did render rather greenish-cyan, whereas this image shot on Fujichrome Provia shows more blueish-cyan. ENJOY the VIEW! 10.01.2022 Tacking Point Lighthouse @Port Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia SINGLE (film) Rolleiflex 2.8C, Carl Zeiss Planar 80mm Fujichorome Provia ISO100F Slide 120mm... taken @F5.6, about 2 hours exposed developed at local LAB & scanned with Epson V800 & post-processed in PS. There are a few obstacles that you have to overcome to shoot film star trails on this particular location. One of them is to fight the wind for hours on top of the hill. I had to tie up the tripod on the bench to prevent trembling in the strong wind. The second challenge is to fight light pollution, such as car headlights and torches carried by people. 06.01.2022 Craig's Hut @Mt. Buller, VIC SINGLE (on film) This image was taken at Craig's Hut in the Victorian High Country in December last year. It is a well-known place, but in terms of photogenic, I'd say, maybe. It is a difficult subject to photograph even though it is a beautiful place to be. But the view from it is absolutely breathtaking. It was during the massive bushfire last year. So we were worried about the clear night sky but, it was all good. I left the shutter open till d...awn to capture the pinky sky in the east. ENJOY the VIEW! 04.01.2022 @Middle Head Fort, Mosman Sydney SINGLE (on film) The Middle Head is one of Sydney Harbour's seven headlands. You can enjoy scenic views of Sydney Harbour from the lookout or take a stroll around the historic fort and military relics. Once you stand there and look out to the north and south heads you know why they built a military fortification there. By the way, I visit this place for astro because this is one of the few places in the heart of Sydney where you can capture t...he milky way reasonably clear. The original image was shot in portrait format but cropped in square format. The light scribbles around the ruin are the result of portrait shooting with Fuji Instax Mini. My daughter likes to take photos with the Instax Mini and she wanted to take some night shots of herself. So she accompanied me on the night and I took photos of her at the stairs with the Instax Mini. I didn't mind doing it because I knew that it would create some positive effect rather than ruining the image. And it surely did. ENJOY the VIEW!
