25.01.2022 REPOST FROM KURRAJONG ANIMAL HOSPITAL FUR GOOD FRIDAY PHOTO
24.01.2022 WATCH OUT, SNAKES ABOUT Snake bites can be unpredictable, therefore immediate veterinary treatment is required. When you bring your pet in to us, the veterinarian will perform certain procedures. Each individual patient can be different, depending on the snake, severity of bite, amount of time passed since bite and the patients condition. The following procedures may be performed:... - Firstly, our veterinarian will asses your pet. Taking patient vitals and searching for a puncture wound (Which cannot always be found) - If it is not certain that your pet is suffering from a snake bite, we can run a snake detection test, which will help determine what snake/if any has bitten your pet. - If treating for a snake bite, we may give anti histamines, intravenous fluids, oxygen therapy, pain medication and anti biotics if required. - Snake anti venom therapy will be administered, through an IV fluid line. Some patients may require multiple vials of anti venom. - Repeated blood testing will be performed to monitor organ functions. - Patients suffering snake bites need to be monitored for at least 48 hours, to ensure their chances of recovery are at their highest. Patients may not show signs of organ failure immediately, therefore tests should be performed repeatedly during their recovery. If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake, call the clinic immediately on 4579 7155. See more

18.01.2022 WATCH OUT, SNAKES ABOUT Have you ever wondered how anti venom is created? An anti venom contains the specific anti bodies required for the body to recover from a snake envenomation. Snake bite anti venom is produced by gradually immunising horses to the venom of certain venomous snakes.... After a period of time, the horses blood is taken, which then has the serum separated using a centrifuge. The serum is then purified, allowing it to become an anti venom. Anti venom is quite expensive to create, and does not have a long shelf life, therefore it is costly to replace. But it could be the medication that saves your pets life! See more

15.01.2022 WATCH OUT, SNAKES ABOUT Would you know what to do if your pet was bitten by a snake? Below are vital steps to take, in order to give your pet the best chance of recovery. - Immobolise your pet, and keep them as calm and quiet as possible... - DO NOT put a cold ice pack on the wound, or attempt to aspirate venom from the wound (this venom could help identify the snake at our clinic) - Call the clinic on 4573 1216. We will gather all of the vital equipment and medications required to help your pet before your arrival - If possible, note the colour and size of the snake. But NEVER attempt to catch or kill the snake, it is not only dangerous to yourself and anyone around you, but it is also illegal to kill a native animal. Snake idenfitication can be difficult (Below is a photograph of the different variations of a Brown Snake) Time is key when dealing with snake bite victims. You must have your animal treated, do not attempt to treat your pet yourself. Up to 80% of snake bite victims will recover if treated promptly. Remember, snake bites can be fatal within a short amount of time. Even if you only suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake, we are equipped with tests which can reveal whether venom is present.
14.01.2022 Hi everyone, recently people were asking about how to help wildlife in the bushfires. I am at Colo Heights and I have just heard that there are surviving Roos, ...wallabies and wallaroos further north along Putty Road. They are desperate for food and need lucerne, oat or grassy hay, or kangaroo pellets. One of the locals has found a few spots to drop feed off to them. Access is limited to local residents because trees are falling every day along the road. We can arrange a local drop off point (happy to use my place if needed) from where feed can be distributed.

08.01.2022 TICK TOCK, ITS BRAVECTO OCLOCK! With time flying by so quickly (Its almost 2020!), it can be easy to forget about your pets tick prevention, but with Bravecto, you can achieve greater peace of mind, with Bravectos long lasting tick and flea protection, available for both dogs and cats! Unfotunately, even dogs and cats that never go outdoors are at risk of fleas and ticks, as Australias warm climate is a breeding ground for these nasty parasites, it is important that... your pet is protected. Bravecto is available in chewable (3 months protection) and spot on (6 months protection) form for dogs, and spot on for cats (3 months protecton per treatment). Summer may have only just started, but we have seen an alarming number of tick patients already, so we urge all of our clients to ensure their pets parasite prevention is up to date.

06.01.2022 WATCH OUT, SNAKES ABOUT Today we will be discussing signs & symptoms to look out for if you suspect your pet has come in to contact with a snake. The severity of a snake bite can depend on many factors- these are the type of snake (including the age and size), the time of year the bite has occurred (the beginning of summer is when snakes venom is most potent),when the snake last bit and where on the pets body the snake bit (the closer the wound is to the heart, the sooner... the venom acts). The following are symptoms that can occur from a venomous snake bite: - Sudden weakness which can result in collapsing - Paralysis - Twitching - Shaking - Voming - Disorientation - Dilated pupils which are not responsive to light - Blood in urine - Respiratory distress - Excessive salivation and/or frothing of the mouth - Incontinence REMEMBER- Timing is absolutely vital when dealing with snake bites. The sooner anti venom is administered, the higher chance of recovery. It is important to know that it is not uncommon for a snake bite victim to show symptoms, then quickly recover. This can turn fatal within minutes. You must seek veterinary attention. If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake, call us on 4579 7155. See more

05.01.2022 WATCH OUT, SNAKES ABOUT! Now that summer is here, over the next couple of weeks, we will be discussing a nasty but regular summer occurrence- snake bites, including prevention, symptoms and recovery. To start, we will be discussing snake bite prevention, below are some tips in order to reduce the chances of a snake taking up residence on your property:... - Keep the grass in your garden short - Remove any rubbish or debris (especially wood) in your garden, and keep the area clear, to avoid hidden spots for snakes. - Keep compost in bins. - When walking your dog, especially in rural areas, always keep your dog on a leash. - The less rodents your property has, the less likely snakes will be lured in to your property. You should never try to remove a snake yourself, simply call WIRES or local snake catchers, in case the snake is venomous and a danger to yourself, and anyone around you.
