25.01.2022 We’re living in unprecedented times, and behind that mask, there are mothers, uncles, sisters, dads the list goes on. Thank you for all that you do and all that you are.

23.01.2022 The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted people in our community in varying ways. People may be feeling afraid, worried, anxious and overwhelmed. Last week we held an event on site to support staff with mental health during this pandemic. The event was a drop-in that ran over several days providing information on strategies to help manage stress, worry and anxiety. Staff were encouraged to pop in and speak openly about their emotional health.

23.01.2022 Behind the mask, there is hard work, commitment, and invaluable contributions to the Ramsay community. Thank you.

23.01.2022 Encourage Action Ask: "What have you done in the past to manage similar situations?" Ask: "How would you like me to support you?"... Ask: "What's something you can do for yourself right now? Something that's enjoyable or relaxing?" You could say: "When I was going through a difficult time, I tried this... You might find it useful too." If they've been feeling really down for more than 2 weeks, encourage them to see a health professional. You could say, "It might be useful to link in with someone who can support you. I'm happy to assist you to find the right person to talk to." Be positive about the role of professionals in getting through tough times.

22.01.2022 Every two months JHCs Community Board of Advice meets and is tasked with providing the hospital with recommendations and insights that help inform our service delivery. Last night we met with the Board for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic took off in Australia, and we shared for the first time a special video which captures what we did as a hospital to prepare.

22.01.2022 Please be aware that the JHC COVID clinic may adjust the hours of operation, and potentially close, this Sunday and Monday (9th and 10th August) due to the forecasted severe weather conditions. Please contact the hospital on (08) 9400 9400 to confirm if the clinic hours have changed on the day. The location of the other COVID clinics in WA are found here https://healthywa.wa.gov.au/Articles/A_E/COVID-clinics

22.01.2022 Listen with an open mind If you are concerned about someone, trust your gut and ask, Are you OK?. Listen with an open mind to what they have to say and ask them what you can do to help. In the current circumstances, there might be limits on what you can do but you can definitely be a listening ear and a (virtual) shoulder to lean on. Take what they say seriously and dont interrupt or rush the conversation.... Dont judge their experiences or reactions but acknowledge that things seem tough for them. If they need time to think, sit patiently with the silence. Encourage them to explain: "How are you feeling about that?" or "How long have you felt that way?" Show that youve listened by repeating back what youve heard (in your own words) and ask if you have understood them properly. https://rmsyhc.com/3jZPUwD

22.01.2022 Imagine having a disability that is largely invisible to others but that stops you from living life to your full potential. Thats the experience for many of the 1.2 million Australians who live with a communication disability. Speech pathologists play a key role in helping people communicate with confidence, which is also the theme for this years Speech Pathology Week which runs 23-29 August. At JHC, our speech pathology team treat more than 2400 inpatients and outpatient...s each year and help with a broad range of conditions including: Dysarthria - speech difficulty arising from weakness or paralysis of the muscles of the lips, face and tongue Dementia - progressive decline in cognitive function which can affect language and swallowing difficulties Aphasia - a communication disorder caused by damage to speech and language centres in the brain Dysphonia - when a persons voice sounds abnormal from causes such as vocal misuse, excessive coughing and throat clearing, stress or physical injury Dysphagia - swallowing difficulties Cancer - side effects of certain cancer treatments can result in speech, swallowing and voice difficulties.

21.01.2022 ASK - Because a conversation could change a life Got a feeling that someone you know or care about it isnt behaving as they normally would? Perhaps they seem out of sorts? More agitated or withdrawn? Or theyre just not themselves. Trust that gut instinct and act on it. By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes youve noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up. If they say they are not OK, you can follow our conversation steps to sh...ow them theyre supported and help them find strategies to better manage the load. If they are OK, that person will know youre someone who cares enough to ask. https://youtu.be/ALcTGgr8z3k

21.01.2022 Last week our Director of Cardiology and Board Member for the National Heart Foundation, Dr Jenny Deague, gave an informative and entertaining presentation to some members of the Joondalup Mens Shed. 19.01.2022 OLYMPIC STAR INSPIRES RAMSAY STAFF ON R U OK? DAY Olympic swimming champion Brooke Hanson OAM has praised the amazing work of Ramsay Health Care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, as part of an inspiring webinar to mark R U OK? Day. The national day of action encourages Australians to ask friends, family and colleagues R U OK? if someone in their world is struggling with lifes ups and downs.... Ms Hanson told the hundreds of Ramsay staff who joined the webinar, it was important people take time out for themselves and celebrate their small achievements, not only the big ones. You have all gone above and beyond during this COVID-19 pandemic and youve done so much for our country, Ms Hanson said. You wont always get credit but know that you are loved and supported by so many Australians and we wouldnt have gotten through this without you. So many times youve done fantastic things at work but you may not take time out with colleagues to pat yourselves on the back and say well done. You really need to reach out to each other and celebrate - it can just be as simple as saying hey, well done. Ms Hanson, an Olympic gold and silver medallist, world champion and former world record holder, delivered an inspirational hour-long presentation, where she spoke of the immense challenges she has faced - not only in pursuing her sporting dream but also in her private life, with the loss of her second child Jack at just nine months old. There have been times where I havent been ok, the 42 year old said. I held my son Jack for his last breath and it showed me how precious and short life can be. Id give all my Olympic achievements, all those medals, away if I could have just one more cuddle with my little man. We had to say goodbye to him and that was the saddest day of my life, Ms Hanson said. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well. Were all going to struggle with mental health at some point and we all have to conquer and support each other. Its why R U OK? Day is so important. Ms Hanson spoke of the importance of self-love and self-care - which included a healthy diet, exercise and getting plenty of sleep. Its one of those magical things, exercise, healthy living and eating can make a big difference, she said. The link to Ms Hansons powerful webinar will be available to the Ramsay workforce on the intranet to watch at a time convenient for them. She has also written a book, When Silver is Gold, with all profits from the sale of each copy donated to Lifes Little Treasures Foundation in memory of her son Jack.

19.01.2022 Having an inclusive and diverse workforce is important - it provides us with unique perspectives and more innovative solutions. Thats why at JHC we choose to recruit people from all walks of life, including people who live with disability. One of our highly valued members of the community is Martin Haines, who has been with us for the past 13 years and is an asset to our Hygiene Team. Martin is well supported by EDGE Employment Solutions - WAs first employment agency for p...eople with disability. His Edge coach Kim (pictured) says she loves meeting with him weekly to provide support and his colleagues say he has an contagious energy and an amazing work ethic. In fact, hes become the go-to person in their team he was recently nominated as employee of the month, with his work mates saying they often turn to him as he usually knows the answers to their questions.
