17.01.2022 CLUB IN PROFILE - JOONDALUP UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB Joondalup United Football Club was formed in November 1999 by Bill Byrne with the clubs first season being in ...2000 in the Amateur Fourth Division. Byrne was joined by Neil Pollock, Ross Fontana and Tom Finlay on the first committee with Pollock being President. Their first playing ground was on the outside pitches of the Arena Joondalup. The clubs first season with Byrne as coach was an instant success. With the help of Ray Rose who was scoring goals for the fun, Joondalup won the Fourth Division, scoring 104 goals in the process. Rose would make the state amateur squad, and would soon after join the semi-professional ranks. Joondalup United were in the Amateur Third Division in 2001, and the success continued. This time the club had to settle for a runners-up position, however once again the team was promoted. Over the next two years, the club just missed out on another promotion, however by 2004 the team finished second and with it another promotion. They also made it all the way to the Amateur Cup Final, but lost 4-1 to Spearwood Dalmatinac. Joondalup United had surged up the leagues, and now in Division One, the club were determined to make the top flight of the amateur competition. It only took three years for their dreams to be realised. Under Mark Cox as coach, the team won the league by one point over Kingsley, and were now in the Premier Division. The clubs first two years in the Amateur Premier Division wasnt easy, a respectable seventh placed position in 2008 before they finished tenth in 2009 under new coach Nick Jennings, with relegation being avoided by one point. Byrne was back as coach after a nine year absence in 2010, and he guided the club to third, just seven points behind champions Shamrock Rovers. In 2011, Rudy Proctor became first team coach, in which they won the Amateur Cup for the first time with a 5-3 win over Dalmatinac. In Proctors second season at the helm in 2012, Joondalup United became Amateur Premier Division Champions for the first time. They also made the Cup final once again, but lost 2-1. The following season under Proctor, the team finished runners-up. However, it was during that season that the club applied to join the semi-professional State League competition. The application was approved by Football West later in the year. 2014 was to be the first season of Joondalup United in the State League, and their very first game under new coach Daniel Smith was a 2-0 win away to Kingsway Olympic. The season was a huge success, for the first time juniors were added to the club, and their new home was Forrest Park in Padbury. The first team easily won the State League Division Two title and went undefeated in the process. The success continued in Division One, with John Evans the new senior coach. After ten games, the club were undefeated. Since they joined the State League they were 32 games without a loss. The semi-professional record was thirty-three games held by East Fremantle Tricolore in the 1963/64/65 seasons. To equal the record, the team had to avoid defeat against the Western Knights at Nash Field. However, as fate would have it, the Knights won 2-1. It was still to be a great year, with Joondalup ending up in third spot. 2016 was to be Joondalup Uniteds year. Nick Jennings was to start his reign as coach, and what a season it was. They first won the Night Series Lower Division title and in the league they only lost four times. The club won the title and were now promoted to the NPL-WA. After only eighteen years as a club, Joondalup United were now in the best possible league in Western Australia. Due to criteria, the club moved their home games to Percy Doyle Reserve and played their very first game in the NPL at home against rivals ECU Joondalup. The derby ended in a 2-2 draw. The team finished in seventh position in the fourteen team league. Over that summer, many of the clubs best players left, and 2018 was always going to be a difficult season with three teams going down. As it turned out it was the most difficult year in the clubs history. Only one game was won, with twenty-three losses. The club were relegated. Jennings stayed on as coach in 2019 to rebuild the club. The team was back at home at Forrest Park and relegation was easily avoided with a ninth place finish. In 2020, Joondalup United have had a great start to the season and look to be one of the contenders for the Division One title.
