25.01.2022 Only Perth would build a major motorway along prime waterfront and then continue to widen it until all that remains of the foreshore is a strip of limestone retaining wall. Not only that, but we are further reducing the amenity for non-vehicle users of the river. We have known for decades that increased road capacity induces demand for more vehicles. Widening is a zero-sum game where the taxpayer and the environment lose.

24.01.2022 Without a doubt I know which street scape I would prefer to be in. There is NO reason why we can't do this in urban areas across Perth. - It was done with Hay St and Murray St Malls - nobody would argue we should put cars back in there - and we can do it again. Good urban environments are beautiful, comfortable places where people want to spend time. In the wake of coronavirus, Vienna and cities across Europe are continuing to reclaim their streets for pedestrians.

24.01.2022 Did you know that the City of South Perth requires a 50m2 café to provide an absurd 250m2 of off-street parking? According to the City, providing that parking (10 bays) would cost approximately $528,000. That's a massive cost to business and consumers and an incredibly inefficient use of land. 24.01.2022 FINALLY you can rep Como at the shops. After much back and forth with the community to settle on a design, here is our Como Tote Bag! Now you can have a neighbourhood tote just like all of the cool kids in Freo. Get it here: https://bit.ly/3fgOjkd (Priced to be revenue neutral)

24.01.2022 This is Utrecht in the Netherlands, this Saturday, they will officially reopen the Utrecht City Moat, previously the site of a major motorway. If Utrecht can remove a motorway of this scale... Is there a future where Como Beach is actually a beach again? Perth's expensive and congested car dependence is the result of policy choices. Consecutive governments have *chosen* to eliminate real choice. People in Perth aren't provided a true choice to drive or not, we are given no real alternative - all because of policy choices that have resulted in the average Western Australian spending in excess of $12,000 per year on their vehicle. That's a lot of money and a lot of opportunity. https://bicycledutch.wordpress.com//cycling-around-the-re/

23.01.2022 Mends Street and Preston Street would be prime candidates for a Dutch-style street upgrade. In London, shoppers who did not arrive in cars spent 40% more than shoppers who did arrive in cars, foot traffic doubled and retail vacancies dropped by 17%.

19.01.2022 The part of this announcement that could have the most significant positive impact on our streetscapes and the ability of business to get off the ground is the changes to parking minimum requirements. Often, if a business does not have a sufficient quantity of off-street parking bays, the business has to pay up thousands of dollars to Council. The "updated cash-in-lieu framework will allow for clear and consistent calculations and waive shortfalls up to 10 car bays." Increas...ed parking supply induced demand for vehicle trips - meaning more congestion, more emissions, more noise pollution, more wear on local roads, higher rates for residents and less rates revenue for Council due to reduced density. If a business believes it can harness a sufficient local population without off-street parking, then we should not be forcing them to provide excess parking. This is something the market can manage on its own incredibly well. By eliminating parking minimums, we only have more public space to gain. - Landscaping, beer gardens, squares, more services and amenities. This is a fantastic step towards reducing the stranglehold of car culture over our city.

18.01.2022 When faced with adversity, local businesses like Our Ruby Girl are doing what they can to adapt. Things are changing so fast and the City of South Perth is not only doing nothing to support and encourage business in South Perth, it appears to be actively working to obstruct them. That is not very #TeamAustralia. Our Ruby Girl is a gem in Como's crown and it would be an absolutely appalling loss if they became another victim of this virus. City of South Perth what are you do...ing to support local businesses who are trying to adapt? If the administration isn't taking initiative, what action are our elected representatives taking? Our community is hurting, please, help us. Mayor Greg Milner - City of South Perth Councillor Andre Brender A Brandis - City of South Perth Councillor Glenn Cridland Carl Celedin Councillor Blake D'Souza - City of South Perth Sam for South Perth Ken Manolas for South Perth Council

17.01.2022 You're losing HOW much of your year commuting!? Check out my latest opinion piece on the impact of the commute on our quality of life. As Australia (particularly Perth) heads back to the office and our roads fill up with cars again, it's time we reflect on how our lives changed when we eliminated the commute. What did we do with our new found time? We baked, we spent time with family, we exercised, and we took time to slow down. ... What lessons can we learn and how can we redesign our cities to make them more active, vibrant and livable places? In this article I look at what some cities are doing well and what we have to gain. 13.01.2022 Post Coronavirus, what would you like to see change? This virus has provided us with an opportunity to look at all of the public space and opportunity we have ceded to the private vehicle. Improved accessibility, wider footpaths, more urban greenery, cleaner air and 15-minute cities are aims that are in the public interest. There is already an alarming pattern of correlation between high air pollution and high mortality rates for Covid-19 (Researchers at Harvard found that an... increase in particulate pollution of just one microgram per cubic meter could increase a sufferer’s chances of dying by 15%). As we ease restrictions and people seek to move around the city more, we need a plan to ensure people don't turn to a transit mode that does so much damage to air quality. Cities like Paris and Milan are taking what have previously been congestion-filled boulevards and turning them into public space for pedestrians and cyclists to improve mobility and the health of the city.

01.01.2022 I hope everyone is keeping safe and taking care of each other during these unprecedented times. If you're struggling to cut through the constant barrage of information about COVID-19; I've compiled the latest restrictions that make up the stage 2 shutdown. Keep well Source: https://www.theguardian.com//australia-coronavirus-stage-2

01.01.2022 Everyone living in our community wants to see it become a more vibrant, diverse and liveable place. As Perth grows, inner-city neighbourhoods like Como can benefit greatly from thoughtful development. That means ensuring development is at human scale, produces active and pedestrian oriented streets (not metres and metres of frosted glass frontages), safe communities and a strong sense of place. There has been a lot of discussion recently of the proposed Amendment 63 to the to...Continue reading
