25.01.2022 Dear Families and Community Members, The College PA and Emergency Systems will be undergoing maintenance work. This will involve the use of the PA and Emergency Evacuation Sirens during the day to test the system is working correctly. The noise of the Sirens during this time is no cause for concern. ... The work is scheduled to start at 8:00am and is likely to continue throughout the day as the different zones in the College are checked. It is anticipated that the work will be completed today. Leon Macfarlane Deputy Principal - Operations

24.01.2022 On Friday 28th August, Joseph Banks Secondary College celebrated our second year of Wear It Purple Day, which is a student led, staff supported initiative for LGBTIQA+ young people and allies. Celebrations included a purple dress day, lunchtime event (including a flash mob dance routine), student Contact activity, and a staff presentation. We fundraised $373 from the sale of purple cupcakes. Headspace were in attendance to help us educate our school community and contribute ...to a pledge wall, and our College also received a special shout out from Daniielle Alexis, the first Australian born transgender actress to feature on a Foxtel/Netflix series (Wentworth Season 5)! Feedback from our student planning group was overwhelmingly positive, as they shared with staff how important this initiative has been in their own personal journeys to acceptance within themselves and in the wider community. Thank you to those who participated in the day and supported our vision for Joseph Banks Secondary College to be an empowering and inclusive learning environment for all community members. 23.01.2022 WELLNESS WEDNESDAY - Relaxation Garden Update! Early in Term 3, the Garden Club students embarked on a project to plan a Relaxation Garden for students to unwind and relax. We have been humbled by the donations received from local businesses, members of our community, and parents. The Relaxation Garden is almost complete, and we would like to acknowledge: Joseph Banks Secondary College P&C for their continued support and donations. Quality Moss Rock Supplies for the amazing ...moss rocks. Bunnings Warehouse Australia for the donation of plants, gardening equipment, and expert advice from Julie. Maria Szep: for her donation of blue steel stones and connecting us to Alex, Ian, and Jane for further donations. Alex from Premier Turf Care and Property Maintenance for delivery and donations of stones and mulch. We are incredibly grateful for the local support! Ian and Jane: donated log stools from their property all the way in Williams. Hocking resident Frank K: donated nearly 20 large wooden stepping blocks for the garden - some with hidden grubs in them! The Garden Club is grateful not only for the donations, but the connection to our local community. Volunteering to participate in initiatives such as the Garden Club allows the students to experience a sense of belonging and connectedness to their peers, staff, school community, and the wider community. We look forward to sharing updates on the final phase of the Relaxation Garden soon! Miss Georgia Smith (Endeavour LSM) and Miss Lisa (Youth Support Worker).

23.01.2022 Just a reminder that there is no school for students on Monday 30 November 2020.

23.01.2022 Tomorrow, Joseph Banks Secondary College will be celebrating R U OK? Day. This is an annual day in September dedicated to remind people to ask their family, friends, and colleagues the question R U OK? in a meaningful way, to support connection to others and prevent suicide. The mission of the day is to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them and support anyone struggling with life. This years theme is theres more to say after R U O...K? and encourages further conversations. We understand that mental health challenges can have a significant impact on learning and the overall wellbeing of our school community. Celebrating R U OK? Day encourages our school community to look after each other and access appropriate support. This message is especially important this year in the context of our earlier bushfires, Covid-19, the Black Lives Matter Movement, and other unprecedented events. During Contact in Weeks 8 and 9, students will participate in an activity to learn about the meaning of R U OK? Day, and how to meaningfully connect with others. On Thursday 10th September, students are allowed to come to school wearing yellow to align with the theme of the day (this is an optional activity and we have not asked for a donation to participate this year). We will also be hosting a lunchtime event for students with various activities including a music concert, conversation corner, activities with the Wellbeing Warriors and wristbands to show support for the cause. The Community Health Service will also be in attendance to educate our students about healthy eating and physical and emotional wellbeing. For more information, please visit www.ruok.org.au. We are excited to be joining the national day of action to encourage conversations that could change a life. The Wellbeing Warriors team Joseph Banks Secondary College

22.01.2022 Unfortunately, last night our Year 7/8 Rugby Academy Team was beaten by Quinns Baptist College in the finals of the Northern Schools Rugby Championship 24 -22. It was an end to end thriller with both teams scoring 4 tries each, but we were pipped to the post by a conversion. However, the boys did themselves and the College very proud. They showed great potential for the future.

21.01.2022 The Academy for Enterprising Girls were given a challenge, to find an issue in their community, turn it into an idea, create a business plan, put it live on a website to gain outside interest and investment and pitch their plan to a panel of judges. Yes, this all happened in two days. On Thursday 26 November 2020, a group of 46 girls came to the Discovery Centre to embark on their enterprising and business journey, working hard and fast to create their businesses. Business i...deas included; Scent Prevent, a social-enterprise company based on producing scented products to assist with mental health; H.H.P, a charity helping homeless people providing them with toiletry care packages; Vedish, a social-enterprise company working on providing students at JBSC with more vegan options in the café and more. The girls were incredibly creative with their ideas and pitches and worked collaboratively over the two days. Special mention to the Young Change Agents for facilitating this amazing opportunity for our students and inspiring them to create community based ideas. 18.01.2022 The human skull has forever been a symbol that artists have been drawn to, from ancient times to present day. Postmodern artist Damien Hirsts diamond encrusted skull, For the Love of God, 2007, was directly inspired the ancient Aztec turquoise skull housed at the British Museum. Over Trimester Two, Year 8 students in Ms Billings Visual Art class have done a wonderful job in designing and creating their own ceramic skulls, building on their pinch pot skills developed in Year 7.

18.01.2022 Last night 203 brilliant young men and women graduated from Joseph Banks Secondary College. Congratulations to the Class of 2020. A shout out to Year 12 Captains Joshua Kay and Phoebe Bertholini. Your speeches were something special.

17.01.2022 Making History Our 1st XV rugby team won their first final in the Colleges Rugby Academy history on Friday night. Our team attended the Northern Schools Spirit of the Game Cup with our yr7/8s, Yr9/10s, 1st XV and girls teams with around 50 students representing Joseph Banks Secondary College. All of our teams played some excellent rugby, including our girls teams. Oaklee J (Year 10) won best on ground for the girls competition.... It was a very emotional night when our 1st XV rugby team made history and beat Quinns Baptist College. In the last 5 years we have had 5 teams in the finals at various age groups. However, we have never managed to get the winning result in the finalsuntil Friday. The boys played some outstanding rugby. They demonstrated maturity and composure to lead the game from the start. Even with minutes to go and the score at 22-21, they withheld some very physical pressure on their own line to hold their position. Tama M scored a full length try, scoring a hat-trick in the final that sealed the win for Joseph Banks SC: 29-22. It was particularly emotional for our 3 leaving Year 12 players Alex H (1XV Captain) Tama M (Best on ground in the Final) Calum M These boys have been an integral part of the Joseph Banks SC Rugby Academy programme over the last 5 years and it was fitting that they made history and led the 1st XV team to our first ever Final win mere weeks before they say good bye to the College. Congratulations also go to: Luke P Preston S Fazal M Rueben B Matthew H Jaedyn R Connor N Mr Phil Webster Rugby Academy Director

17.01.2022 On Friday 28th August, Joseph Banks Secondary College will be celebrating our second year of Wear It Purple Day, which is a student led, staff supported initiative. Wear It Purple was founded in 2010 as a way of raising awareness and fostering supportive, inclusive and empowering environments for LGBTIQA+ young people. The idea was formed in response to global stories of bullying and harassment resulting from the lack of acceptance of gender and sexual identity and divers...ity. Our first priority as a College is to support student learning. One of our strategies to achieve this is to continue development of a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students regardless of background, race, culture, sexuality or gender. Wear It Purple Day is an opportunity for us to uphold these values and take action toward fostering an inclusive school environment for everyone. The following video captures the journey of the Wear It Purple foundation from where it all began to now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUFMvZ3l16E&feature=youtu.be. Hear from the Founder, Board Directors and Youth Action Council on why this is such an important initiative for schools. 14.01.2022 Due to their awesome efforts at the SSWA Netball Day Carnival last week, the Year 7/8 Netball team got the opportunity to play in the elimination final on Thursday the 27th August at Fremantle Netball Centre. Despite the early start (girls had to be at school by 6.50am) the girls were full of energy and ready to play Butler 1 for the first game. It was a close game but they managed to hold their lead and win the game by 1 point. Unfortunately they lost the last 3 games agai...nst Meville, Atwell and Belridge, but were able to hold their own on the court and put up a good fight to keep the scores pretty close. All girls are to be commended for their fantastic efforts and teamwork throughout the day. They are such a lovely group of girls who gel so well together on and off the court. The Year 7/8 Netball team included: Reneza Raveora Keeley Sharrock Sky Levett Hannah Lawson Ava Burke Bree Maiolo Sarvanna Isaraela-Tekorona Makayla Patterson Jorgie Korhonen Danjela Skelaj Jessica Cowley Ciaralee Lingman A huge thank you to Keisha Kaberry and Talesha Talaga who assisted in scoring/timing and umpiring throughout the day, and showed their support from the sidelines. 12.01.2022 On Friday 4th of September we had Year 6 students from Spring Hill Primary School visit the College. Students had a taster of what learning looks like at our college as part of our transition program. Here are some photos of them engaging in a Lego activity for eSports. They had to build a spaceship without the instructions, using the box as their guide. Students, as well as their teachers who accompanied them on the day, said they enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot, while having fun.

11.01.2022 Year 10 Art Academy Over the past 7 weeks, I have been lucky enough to work with an aspiring groups of Year 10 students, to foster their awareness and confidence in their own creative journey. Students identified their top three signature strengths through the VIA Character Strengths survey, to gain an understanding of their current strengths which can be utilised in challenging times. They then researched and ideated what those strengths meant to them and how they could repr...esent these within their thumbnail designs. Students were to showcase their top three signature strengths in Tarot Card inspired lino prints. I have been in awe of the innovation and engagement students have demonstrated throughout this project thus far and cannot wait to see their final Character Strength inspired Tarot Cards. I am exceptionally proud of their commitment and conduct within the classroom to uphold a positive and safe work environment. Miss B - Pre-service Teacher Notre Dame University

08.01.2022 Earlier this term, some of our Year 11 and 12 students studying Mathematics Specialist and Methods, participated in the Rottnest Island Maths Boot Camp. Exams are over, and we can proudly say that all the studying, and team building activities made a huge impact to our students' outcomes! We can safely say, the island has never seen so many ClassPads and maths books, and never ever so many mathematical terms were spoken on the beach or at the picnic tables! We are quite sure ...all the quokkas are a little smarter as well! A huge thank you to Mr Segler, Mr Harris and Miss Lisa for dedicating their precious time and knowledge to the project of "reimagining the teaching and learning of Mathematics". 05.01.2022 We had 3 teams attend the SSWA High Schools Cup North Netball Carnival on Friday and our Netball girls are continuing the Colleges sporting success. After Fridays events, the top 2 teams in each division per age group move through to the Elimination final next Thursday in Fremantle against schools South of the river. The Year 7/8 team were undefeated in their division against teams from Ballajura, Ashdale, Belridge, Darling Range and Butler, qualifying them for the Elimin...ation final next week. These girls dominated and showed their versatility and willingness to play a range of positions on court. The Year 9/10 team won 2 games against Mt Lawley and Ashdale, and lost 2 games against Belridge and John Forrest. The two games they lost were close and they held their own out on court with specialist Netball schools, taking a lot of confidence in their ability. Many of these girls are currently in the Netball Elective and their knowledge of how they all play and communicate on court helped. I am waiting to find out the results from the Carnival to see if we progress to the next round. The Year 11/12 team had a challenge as their age group was smaller and the teams competing were all very skilful. They played against Belridge, Darling Range, Governor Stirling and John Forrest. The girls had some great passages of play and worked well together considering they havent played together for a long time or at all before. Unfortunately they didnt get a win, but they showed their potential on court and had a lot of fun while doing it. The umpires we took to the Carnival are all qualified C badge umpires and showed outstanding skills and professionalism throughout all games. Well done Milly Martin, Keisha Kaberry and Caitlin Dale. Thank you to Miss Nelson and Miss Gibbs for Coaching at the Carnival and helping select the teams back in Term 1, along with getting up bright and early for Netball training over the last couple of weeks. Congratulations goes to the following girls who showed an outstanding team culture and skills on the court, you should be very proud. 7/8: Hannah Lawson Jorgie-lee Korhonen Jessica Cowley Reneza Raveora Sarvanna Isaraela-Tekorona Keeley Sharrock Bree Maiolo Sky Levett Ava Burke Daniela Skelaj Mikayla Patterson Ciara-lee Lingman 9/10: Emily Woods Olivia Jolley Shanae Schwarzbach Katelyn Inglis Chloe Boyd Tia-Moana Yaqona Nora Surur Talesha Talaga Ornela Skelaj Ashlee Tardrew 11/12: Avei Kaberry Apiou Majok Evelyn Kenasi Natarsha Nyugen Billy Alder Maddie Keenan Shante Solomona Arjeta Skelaj Zaina Masanga Deborah Mandungu Rylee Sharrock Miss Jeary Health and Physical Education Teacher
