24.01.2022 NEW SMARTPHONE APP HELPING DIABETICS WORK OUT WHAT TO EAT Hunter New England Health researchers are trialling an app they hope will help patients with... Type-1 diabetes better regulate their insulin levels. The app is being developed in collaboration with the University of Newcastle and the Hunter Medical Research Institute. Senior dietitian at the John Hunter Children's Hospital Dr Carmel Smart is developing the app working with paediatric patients and their parents. She says the app works out the insulin requirements for fats and proteins, NOT just the carbohydrates traditionally measured in diabetic eating plans. "If you're just dosing according to carbohydrates, you get those peaks and troughs," she said. "If you dose for protein, fat and carbohydrate you don't get those peaks and troughs as much. "The other great thing is that then people don't feel worried about eating certain foods, because as we all know if you have to restrict your food for health, you often want to eat more of it." Newcastle local, Cecile Le Roux says the app has given her five year old daughter Elaine, who has Type-1 diabetes, more freedom. Ms Le Roux says Elaine's quality of life has improved after they found adding more meat to her diet evened out her insulin needs. "I feel it definitely improved my quality of life, because I don't have to remember or have a notebook with all the carbohydrate contents of food with me," she said. "So the app, because it has a database, I don't have to remember, and I can google and it's immediately there, that definitely helped me a lot."
23.01.2022 March 2008 ....11 years ago Joshua was diagnosed with Type1 Diabietes. It’s been a rollercoaster of a ride and every day we learn something new. So many things affect sugar levels.... heat, hormones, stress, illness, adrinalin to name a few. Josh is due for a pump upgrade. (Pumps only last 4 years) He has been on a pump for 4 years which makes a big difference in his life. He also now has a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) which monitors his sugar levels which is a great help when it alerts us to a low sugar, which is life threatening if left untreated. Looking forward to his new pump and all the new technology that goes with it! I am very proud of my son and all he has to deal with. It’s not an easy job for us as parents but it’s even harder for Josh! Love you my boy
