These new Virgin resident airfares are a significant win for Kimberley residents and will make a real difference for many families. Residents need to be members of the Velocity Frequent Flyer program and have their profile linked to a regional address within a range of an eligible port. 22.01.2022 You've probably seen the deals on regional WA airfares that we've secured over the past couple of years. They've helped tens of thousands of people get out to ...regional WA, supporting local jobs and our local economy. Well, we've got another one - and this is the biggest one yet. We've partnered with Virgin Australia and Qantas to deliver 50,000 affordable airfares to or from Broome, Exmouth and Kununurra - and they are on sale now. Our State's beautiful north offers some of the most unique and sought-after experiences and adventures available anywhere on the planet. The tourism industry in the State’s north has felt the impacts of COVID-19 the most, with its remoteness making it more difficult to attract visitors from within WA. The last time we offered discounted flights between Perth and Broome and Perth and Kununurra - they sold out within a week. So don't wait - do your bit for WA tourism and jobs by booking your trip up north today. Bookings can be made online or through your local travel agent. Go out, wander out yonder and support WA jobs.

21.01.2022 GROUND-BREAKING PILOT PROJECT LAUNCHED TO DRIVE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN REMOTE ABORIGINAL COMMUNITIES The McGowan Government has today launched an innovative economic development pilot project to reform land tenure in remote communities to improve economic, health and social outcomes for Aboriginal people. The Land Activation Project is a place-based pilot project incorporating land tenure reform to set the stage for improved economic development outcomes, community governan...ce, upgrade of essential services and to provide additional housing. Bidyadanga, Western Australia’s largest remote community, has been selected as the pilot site and the McGowan Government has committed $7.3 million towards the project. The State Government will work with representatives for the native title holders, the Karajarri Traditional Lands Association and the Bidyadanga Aboriginal Community La Grange Incorporated and community members to remove land tenure barriers. This will enable future economic activation, business development and regularisation of services. The pilot project highlights the State’s commitment to supporting remote communities and will provide an opportunity to re-engage the Commonwealth on future investment in remote Aboriginal communities after a period of progressive withdrawal of federal resources. Land tenure change is considered a fundamental first step to ensure remote communities are sustainable and able to thrive economically by attracting new forms of investment, creating opportunities for home ownership and improving services.

20.01.2022 This summer we don’t have our usual influx of international backpackers looking for seasonal jobs in the Kimberley. This has meant many of our local agriculture, tourism and hospitality businesses have had to look at new ways to employ staff. The McGowan Government’s Work and Wander out Yonder campaign is encouraging young West Aussies to head out to the regions to get a job as well as offering them travel and accommodation incentives. ... With schools and university wrapping up for the year it is the perfect time for regional businesses to get online and list their job vacancies or use a job matching service that is currently free for regional businesses. We have had lots of regional businesses give it a go and find great young WA workers. If your business is looking for staff, check it out at www.wa.gov.au/workandwander

To date, 654 people have recovered from the virus in WA. There have been 422,862 COVID-19 tests performed in WA. Of those tested, 72,522 were from regional WA. ---- - Testing - Anyone in WA will now be assessed for a COVID-19 test if they present with ANY of the following: - present with a fever of 37.5C or above - have had a fever in the last few days (for example, night sweats or chills), without a known source - have acute respiratory symptoms (for example, coughing, shortness of breath, sore throat) - acute loss of smell or taste If you have these symptoms, please get tested, and help us identify every case of COVID-19 in WA as early as possible. 10 COVID clinics are now operational visit https://healthywa.wa.gov.au/Articles/A_E/COVID-clinics to find your local COVID clinic or other testing locations. In other regional areas, people should go to a public hospital, health service or remote health clinic. Please call ahead if you are concerned that you have contracted COVID-19. Patients will be assessed and where appropriate tested, provided with appropriate information and referred for further medical treatment if necessary. Those individuals who are tested and well enough to return home, will be asked to self-isolate while they await test results. Anyone who is confirmed to have COVID-19, who does not require hospitalisation will be required to stay in self-isolation as instructed by the public health team. ---- - Closure of the WA border - Western Australia's borders are closed to travel from interstate. - Changes to quarantine requirements for Victorian arrivals - Effective next Monday, 5 October, arrivals to Western Australia who have been in Victoria in the previous two weeks will be allowed to complete self-quarantine, instead of in a hotel, where that is possible. The limited exemption categories for Victorian arrivals will continue to apply and they will continue to be subject to mandatory COVID-19 tests on arrival and on day 11 of their quarantine. The number of exemptions are significantly reduced, meaning only specific essential workers, transport and freight workers and those persons approved by the State Emergency Coordinator, on the advice of the Chief Health Officer, will be permitted to enter WA from Victoria. Please note that any exempt traveller from Victoria who arrives before next Monday will still need to serve their full 14 days of quarantine in a hotel. - Changes to travel restrictions for NSW arrivals - From Monday, 5 October, the additional restrictions which had applied to New South Wales will be lifted. This means that the current conditions that apply to other States and Territories, except Victoria, will now apply to NSW as well. This change will allow for more exempt travel to occur from New South Wales. These changes are based on our latest health advice. Currently for states other than Victoria and NSW, an exempt traveller who will be allowed into our State, must perform one of the following functions: - Health services - Emergency services - Transport, freight and logistics - Specialists skills, not available in WA, for industry or business continuity; - National or State security and governance; and - Courts and judicial services. There are also exemptions for FIFO workers and their families, however strict 14-day quarantine measures will need to be followed, when they first enter the State. Further exemptions will also apply on compassionate grounds. More information and a list of exemptions can be found at www.wa.gov.au/covid19 If you are aware of someone breaching a requirement to self-isolate - please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or WA Police on 131 444. ---- Official information regarding COVID-19 in Western Australia - www.wa.gov.au/covid19 Information on WA's roadmap for easing restrictions - www.wa.gov.au/covid19roadmap WA Department of Health information www.healthywa.wa.gov.au National Coronavirus Helpline 1800 020 080 WA COVID-19 health and information and advice - 13 COVID (13 26843) Smartraveller information regarding travel advice for Australians - www.smartraveller.gov.au

15.01.2022 DAY 12 - 16 DAYS IN WA - STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN Research tells us that non-lethal strangulation is one of the strongest indicators of an increased risk of homicide. There are often no visible injuries, but it can still have severe medical consequences for the victim. The McGowan Government has passed new laws that mean ‘suffocation and strangulation’ can be charged and prosecuted as a specific criminal offence.... Persistent family violence is now also a criminal offence, recognising that physical and psychological abuse against a partner often forms a pattern of offending. By holding perpetrators to account, we can save lives. Find out more at https://www.communities.wa.gov.au/projects/16-days-in-wa/

These one-stop hubs will provide a specialist service for women and families experiencing family and domestic violence. They will bring support services together and wrap them around those who need them using a 'one-stop' approach.... This model, which is new to WA, will make it easier for women and children impacted by family and domestic violence to get help sooner in a safe space within their own community. 13.01.2022 MCGOWAN GOVERNMENT COMMITS $20.9 MILLION TO REDEVELOP DERBY DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL The McGowan Government is giving the Derby District High School a $20.9 million upgrade to improve education facilities and student services. Treasurer Ben Wyatt made the funding announcement today at the school, which originally opened in 1960. ... The multi-million-dollar investment includes the demolition of two old classroom blocks that will be replaced with contemporary teaching buildings. The education facilities will be designed to provide greater flexibility and enable staff to deliver diverse programs that meet the learning needs of students. As part of the redevelopment, there will also be a new student services building including rooms for the Clontarf Football Academy, a new canteen, and a new facility for students including toilets, change rooms, showers and a laundry. A staff amenities building with a staffroom, study areas and toilets will also be included in the redevelopment, while the school’s existing staff area will receive refurbishments to repurpose it as office space. The planning process will involve seeking input from the local community and educators to capture the needs of the local community. "I am so pleased to see this funding allocated to Derby District High School and also to be part of a government that is prepared to seek input from the local community and educators on what they consider should be included. "This consultation will ensure that the upgrades cater for the unique cultural and learning requirements of our youth." Comments attributed to Kimberley MLA Josie Farrer

This trial is aimed at increasing the safety of victims and the community, and will work in unison with other measures we have put in place to address Western Australia's high rates of family and domestic violence. 06.01.2022 MASSIVE BANDWIDTH BOOST FOR KIMBERLEY PUBLIC SCHOOLS Almost all Kimberley public schools will receive significant bandwidth increases from early 2021 to meet the growing demand for students to access online learning materials. The Department of Education has signed a $130 million extension to its telecommunications contract with Telstra.... This will deliver the benefits of high-speed fibre and internet access to 350,000 students, teachers and other school staff across WA. The base bandwidth for every student and staff member will increase from 100kb/s to an average of 2Mb/s. This means an average boost of 20 times existing capacity for our local school. When complete, schools that currently have limited bandwidth will be able to run simultaneous online learning and activities in a number of classrooms without lag. At no additional cost to the Department of Education, under the agreement Telstra will invest approximately $30 million to upgrade local exchanges and backhaul capacity - particularly in regional towns - which will benefit the entire local community and other government agencies. The Department of Education will continue to work towards improving the telecommunications services in 23 very remote schools in the Kimberley including Djugerari Remote Community School, Jungdranung Remote Community School, Kalumburu Remote Community School, Muludja Remote Community School, Ngalapita Remote Community School, Wananami Remote Community School & Wangkatjunka Remote Community School.

05.01.2022 DAY 2 - 16 Days in WA Stop Violence Against Women! We’ve launched the Path to Safety: Western Australia’s strategy to reduce family and domestic violence 2020-2030, a long-term vision for a Western Australia where all people live free from family and domestic violence. It sets out a clear whole-of-government and community plan for reducing and responding to family and domestic violence over the next decade.... This is part of a comprehensive packages of reforms and initiatives delivered by the State Government to increase the safety of woman and children.

04.01.2022 Today marks five months since the last time Western Australia recorded a case of community transmission of COVID-19. The last time we detected community spread ...of the virus was on 11 April. Since then, while WA has recorded cases of the virus, all have either involved known close contacts of other cases or returned travellers from overseas. Avoiding community spread of COVID-19 is the most important measure of our success in fighting the virus, so this milestone is very significant. This accomplishment shows that our vigilance has paid off - but it should also be a reminder that we need to keep up our efforts. So let's keep up our personal hygiene, keep getting tested and staying home when sick, and keep working together to keep our State safe and strong.

03.01.2022 Today’s update!

02.01.2022 OPERATION HEAT SHIELD $5 MILLION BOOST The McGowan Labor Government on Sunday announced a major $5 million boost to WA Police to crack down on crime and antisocial behaviour over the summer months and keep Western Australians safe. Heat Shield will deliver high-visibility policing to tackle the rise in crime rates historically experienced over the warmer months when more people are out socialising. This will include patrols at town centres, shopping, entertainment and transport areas and increased operations to target burglary, theft and family violence. The first Operation Heat Shield, which ran during the same period last year, resulted in 2,500 arrests, 1,425 summonses and 5,882 charges. "Our community does not tolerate crime and anti-social behaviour." "I welcome the McGowan Government increased funding to ensure more police on the beat in Kimberley."
