22.01.2022 We'd like to give every one of our amazing crew a big elbow-bump! After her longest-ever break from the rails, The Ghan has now completed her first return journey and our crew have done us proud. Not only have they seamlessly returned to the exceptional service The Ghan is renowned for, but they've integrated our new JourneySafe plan into the experience flawlessly. As you can see, they are just delighted to be (safely) back travelling again.

21.01.2022 Good Morning from The Ghan We're about to arrive in to Coober Pedy, but first we'll be enjoying a quiet moment in the privacy of our cosy cabin. : exploreshaw (via IG)

19.01.2022 3 DAYS TO GO!! Have you ever wondered what goes into creating a space like the Platinum Club? Check out this timelapse from 2016 for a behind the scenes look at how our Platinum carriages are built: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wta3Asjz0zA With full-sized double beds, coffee tables, plush ottomans, walk-in showers and views out of both sides of the cabin, it sounds more like a luxury yacht than a train, but that's exactly what Platinum Service has offered guests aboard T...he Ghan since 2008. Made even better in 2016 by the introduction of Platinum Club, just three years later the demand for Platinum Service was so high that the fleet had to be doubled!

18.01.2022 This is no ordinary train. With an average length of 774 metres, but reaching lengths of almost a kilometre long during the peak season, the Ghan is an icon of Australia. And it’s definitely the most luxurious way to travel through the outback. Travel bloggers Explore Shaw recently joined us on The Ghan Expedition and reading about their experience has left us feeling warm and fuzzy Read all about their outback adventure here: https://www.exploreshaw.com/australias-greate...st-rail-journ/ : Explore Shaw

16.01.2022 Welcome to the Queen Adelaide Restaurant - her wheels may be moving at a mile a minute, but onboard, at a more civil pace, the gentle tinkle of crockery is joined by a hum of friendly conversations about amazing food. This is where you'll feel The Ghan's heart beat. : @exploreshaw (via IG)

15.01.2022 Our crew are putting the finishing touches on The Ghan because... THERE'S JUST ONE DAY TO GO!! On average, preparing The Ghan for a week on the rails means pouring some 3,000 litres of water into each carriage, pumping 40,000 litres of diesel into our two locomotives and three power generators, making 283 beds, and briefing our 49 on board crew to welcome guests across 36 carriages!... Tomorrow, we've scaled things down a little bit to help our guests JourneySafe with peace of mind and confidence. We have almost 100 guests across 21 carriages, but we've kept the same number of restaurants and lounges to maintain physical distancing. As always, we hope you'll share your pictures of her with us in the comments tomorrow.

13.01.2022 2 DAYS TO GO!! Did you know that The Ghan once served as a hospital on wheels? During World War II, The Ghan was pressed into medical service to treat the victims of the Bombing of Darwin. One of these hospital trains can be seen here at Adelaide River where The Ghan passes through today.... Those hospital carriages? They started life as cattle wagons. Talk about a career change! : Australian War Memorial

09.01.2022 Lunch time on The Ghan! Loaded hummus served with a side of beautiful South Australian countryside.

09.01.2022 We'll never tire of watching an afternoon sky show from the Outback Explorer Lounge with a cuppa (or glass of champagne ) in hand

08.01.2022 4 DAYS TO GO!! On 1 February 2004, the dream of an uninterrupted North-South Transcontinental rail journey, the only such journey in the world, was finally realised when The Ghan departed Adelaide and roared into the history books. The first plans for an Adelaide to Darwin rail journey were had in the 19th Century, but the technology of the day wasn't up to the harsh conditions and the plans had to be shelved indefinitely.... Locals were so excited to finally see The Ghan arrive that they turned out to welcome her in their own "cheeky" Top End style - mooning The Ghan as she pulled into town.

06.01.2022 We were going to tell you a joke about camels in the desert, but it was a bit dry Happy Hump Day from The Ghan Expedition exploreshaw (via IG)

05.01.2022 5 DAYS TO GO!! It is hard to describe the joy with which we'll watch The Ghan's big red locomotives pull out of Adelaide on Sunday - but why are they red anyway? While steam locomotives were generally painted black to hide soot and grime, the 1950s brought a huge change to The Ghan: Brand new diesels arrived in Australia and the owners of The Ghan at the time were keen to show them off, painting them in a sleek, modern red and silver design (like the one shown here at the P...ichi Richi Railway.) The red and silver remained until the 1980s, when it was replaced by green and gold, but for a train that is as synonymous with the Red Centre as the outback sand itself, there is only one colour The Ghan loco should be - and the red paintwork returned in 2004. Have you seen one of The Ghan locos (old or new) out and about? Don't forget to share your pictures in the comments. Craig Rimmer (via Aughey's)
