25.01.2022 So often I have clients come to me pregnant with their next baby after a traumatic first birth. These beautiful women are looking for healing and to find their power again. We talk about their first births, unpack their feelings, and then we plan for their next birth. Ive lost count of the times Ive heard I wish Id met you before my first birth! Those words are great for my ego but you know what? The power was always within them, more often than not they just needed someone who believed in them

24.01.2022 4 years ago I thought my daughter had a sleep problem. I could not understand why she wanted to sleep soundly on me for 2 hours but only sleep 20 minutes alon...e in a cot... This explanation of the 4th trimester and creating a womb-like environment really helped me to understand, surrender, and embrace those sleepy wrap cuddles. Theres so much to say here about this BEAUTIFUL illustration, let me sum it up in 6 points: 1. Your baby has only ever known your gently sways, the muffled sounds in your womb, the rhythm of your beating heart, and being snug at the perfect temperature - Babywearing closely replicates that! 2. Your baby relies on you for survival and has instincts built in to feel safe when close to you, and possibly in danger if away from you - therefore a carried baby cries less and is generally more settled. 3. Us mothers are pretty clever and keeping our baby close helps us regulate their temperature and quickly pick up on their cues - this can reduce anxiety and help us feel more confident in our roles as we tune in to our babys needs. 4. Our babies are born very immature, unable to walk or eat by themselves, carrying them is primal, we are a carrying species, born to carry and be carried Using a baby carrier to make life more practical helps facilitate natures plan. 5. The human brain is so large that a baby must be born before the brain is fully developed so that it fits through the birth canal. Our babies continue to gestate, grow, and develop outside the womb and what better environment to thrive in than held up close next to a caregivers heart and their warmth! 6. A babys mental health MATTERS. The first 3 years are crucial for a childs brain development. This is when they learn is the world safe and friendly? Or scary and risky? Creating a safe environment for them to feel secure & loved has such profound positive impacts for the well-being of the child that should ripple on to create a healthy adult too. Carrying is not only practical, its almost crucial to your childs wellbeing now and in the future, and therefore the future of this planet So if your baby only wants to sleep on you, be held by you, or just have cuddles all day long, they arent broken they dont have a problem, their behaviour is completely normal. And if youre carrying them and keeping them close, kudos to you. I know it can be exhausting and you can feel touched out almost on a daily basis, it isnt always easy. But it wont be forever and the long term benefits are so worth it to build a secure, grounded, confident child - B r o o k e - x - P.S. If you want to learn just how easy it is to use a carrier/wrap OR get the best use out of the one you already have, my shortcut online program Babywearing Download has just launched! This will get you from overwhelmed and confused to confident and comfortable ASAP so you can be enjoying the cuddles with your baby Join the program here: https://brookemaree.com.au/pages/babywearing-download Pic by Taninette

24.01.2022 Remember, pregnant mamas... When this is all over (and it will be!), you will be the women who were pregnant/gave birth during a global pandemic. Youre the one...s who faced the unthinkable and soldiered on because you had to. If you can go through this, you can go through anything. Youve got this! 24.01.2022 A lot of women tell me that part of their birth trauma occurred when they felt like they weren't listened to or had their choices respected. They are often lef...t feeling like a mere incubator, second to the well-being of their baby. Alone in a room full of people, not fully present or involved in the birth of their child. And this isn't the way it should be. Unfortunately, if you choose to birth within the system then you need to be prepared to stand up for yourself, your choices and your human rights. This is part of what I teach my doula clients. It is a sad fact, that the opportunity for true informed consent is rarely given to women these days. Instead their is often blatant ignorance of legal rights, bullying, coercion and abuse. This free resource is for everybody. You are welcome to share it with anyone you know who may be giving birth soon.

24.01.2022 Wise advice from Lucys bottom!!

22.01.2022 Awww! Its a boy! Congratulations to Meghan & Harry

20.01.2022 I supported clients through more caesarean births (planned and unplanned) than vaginal births last year. I saw the strength of those mothers and was in awe. #caesareanawarenessmonth Beautiful artwork by Spirit Y Sol

18.01.2022 Oh mama, I know youre scared. And sad, and probably really angry too. I know you feel alone and unprepared and let down. Youre grieving what you thought your ...pregnancy would look like and trying to wrap your head around the birth to come. I know it hurts. I know how your heart must ache. But beautiful, you are the brightest light in the darkest of times. You remind us that life goes on. That love and joy and innocence prevail. That brave new souls are coming to transform this world, and that we must put aside our pain and rise up to greet them. You allow us to rejoice. To hope. To remember that this is all temporary, and that there is light on the horizon. Mama, you carry the medicine we need for these times. Its a heavy weight to bear, I know. And it may feel like too much. You may wish for an easier path (like one that doesnt go through a global pandemic!!) but you are the magic in this madness. You are brave and bold and beautiful beyond belief. The universe dances through you in ecstatic motion, reminding us of the sacred balance of life. Fear and hope. Grief and gratitude. Birth and death. I know its a lot to carry, but you mama, are made for this. We bow to your strength and bless you with tears of gratitude. See more

14.01.2022 I M P O R T A N T A N N O U N C E M E N T I have recently decided to take a break from taking on new birth clients. This is due to a work opportunity for my husband that is just too good to pass up. Because of this I cannot commit to attending births for the foreseeable future (current clients need not worry!). I will still be running Beer and Bubs: childbirth education for dads at the pub at The Cumby with the amazing Erin from Nurture the Goddess, and I will still be o...ffering Birth Planning sessions (see my website for more info). I will absolutely return to supporting births sometime in the future but for now this is the right decision for me, and for my family. With love and blessings, Sophie See more

11.01.2022 A great visual comparison for the stretch & sweep that many women are offered in the final weeks of their pregnancy.

11.01.2022 3004 days and also still figuring it out!

10.01.2022 Oh mama, I know you’re scared. And sad, and probably really angry too. I know you feel alone and unprepared and let down. 10.01.2022 So here we are in 2019! I would like to thank all of you for your continued support throughout 2018. I so enjoy having this platform to share my passion for positive, supported birth. I hope you stick around for 2019 To the amazing clients I have had the privilege of supporting in 2018THANK YOU. Each and every one of you gave me the opportunity to learn and grow. The role of a doula is so humbling. Sometimes I come away from a birth wondering if I could have done more? M...ore often than not though I come away completely and utterly exhausted but with a heart full of joy, and oxytocin coursing through me This year I am looking forward to taking a break from on-call birth work while my husband works hard on getting Lion Arts Factory off the ground. I will be continuing my work with Beer and Bubs: childbirth education for dads at the pub and am always here for anyone who needs a bit of support or direction in planning for their birth Ill leave you with this brilliant quote I read this morning in a Midwifery Today email: I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. Youre doing things youve never done before, and more importantly, youre Doing Something. So thats my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobodys ever made before. Dont freeze, dont stop, dont worry that it isnt good enough, or it isnt perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life. Whatever it is youre scared of doing, Do it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever. Neil Gaiman

09.01.2022 Oooft. This about triggered a let-down for me! This is a perfect demonstration of newborn feeding

09.01.2022 They told you about the contractions, but did they tell you about the expansion? Did they tell you how your body would open to make way for the whole universe ...to pass through? Did they tell you how your heart would explode with a love bigger than anything youve ever known as you pulled your baby to your chest? They told you about the ring of fire but did they tell you about the crown of stars? Did they mention that theres a moment when your baby enters the world and you leave your body and touch the heavens and become the light of a million galaxies? Did they tell you how the pain of stretching to receive your child would be more exsquisite than any sensation youve felt? They told you would scream but did they tell you about how you would roar? Did they tell you about the power that would rise up from your belly as you called your baby forth with your mighty voice? Did they tell you how you would embody the wild woman within you and breathe fire with your song? They told you would bleed, but did they tell you how that sacred blood wouldnt scare you? How you would feel grateful for that magical liquid of life as it trickled down your leg- how you would honor its flow and how it would help you heal a lifetime of hating your bodys bleeding cycles. . They told these stories and taught you to fear birth, to fear your power, to fear yourself. But youre stronger and wiser than that mama. You know that birth is your divine dance, your souls song, your moment with God, and you walk fearlessly into her open arms. 04.01.2022 This is fascinating!

03.01.2022 A reminder that, earlier this year, expert researchers at Oxford Brookes University brought together research on childbirth, birth setting and the use of water ...immersion in labour and shared key points which highlighted the safety and benefits of the use of water for labour and birth, during and beyond the coronavirus pandemic. Their points included that: Water immersion for healthy women is associated with a number of beneficial maternal outcomes with no known adverse risks to the neonate. COVID-19 is not a waterborne virus, therefore, the water environment dilutes respiratory droplet and faecal contamination potential. In the Coronavirus context, water immersion presents a lower risk of contamination risk for midwives compared with bed birth because it promotes the use of social distancing without interrupting normal midwifery care. Burns et al (2020) The authors also noted that: "The birthing pool environment presents a natural barrier between the woman and her midwife. Supporting women in the water reduces droplet, aerosol and faecal contamination, presenting a low-risk transmission activity for the Coronavirus. Water immersion for healthy women is associated with a number of beneficial maternal outcomes with no known adverse risks to the neonate. For primiparous women, birthing in midwifery-led settings (AMU/FMU or home) water immersion reduces transfer rate with the greatest benefit seen at FMU. Water immersion for labour and/or birth should be supported and encouraged as an effective method of analgesia." Burns E, Feeley C, Venderlaan J et al (2020). 02.01.2022 Do you see anyone messing with this mama, baby or the cord? Is her cord being cut prematurely before baby gets all his or her blood? Is mom getting a shot of pi...t to speed up the process and mess with the natural balance of hormones that are fully capable of expelling the placenta and clamping down the uterus to prevent blood loss? Is baby being taken away to be weighed and measured not allowing for the very important skin to skin time? Let nature do its thing! We have all it takes within us! We deserve no less than the respect and awe the animals deserve. Your body is capable of growing a baby, it is capable of birthing a baby with respect, dignity, and no interference. #informeddecisions #empoweredbirth #undisturbedbirth #alovingbirth Photo credit National Geographic See more
