24.01.2022 Good news article! Well done Gold Coast University Hospital. Australia’s first baby to a coronavirus carrier has been born: vaginally and at just over 40-weeks gestation. We know that this early bonding, with skin-to-skin and early establishment of breastfeeding bodes well for the rest of the child's future, Dr Khot said. This is something that we have been trying to address for a long time and we can't let COVID take us backwards. https://www.smh.com.au//the-birth-of-a-...coronavirus-carrier #birthingduringcorona #birthmatters #positivebirthstoriesonly
21.01.2022 A feeling of coming full circle. I am teaching a wonderful couple that life almost directly opposite where I decided to ‘take the plunge’ and become a HypnoBirthing Educator. I attended the @birthwithoutfear Conference when Darcy was five weeks old. I attended as a HypnoBirthing mum and ‘birth nerd’ with dreams of maybe one day becoming an educator. Listening to Anthea Thomas (HypnoBirthing International's Vice-President) speak made me realise how much I wanted to do it.... Talking with other @hypnobirthinginternational Educator's made me realise I was with 'my people' as opposed to simply being a 'birth nerd'. And when I spoke to the amazing Mama J @januaryharshe herself and she signed my copy of her book (book review to come) to say 'keep showing pup without fear' I realised that fear is exactly what was stopping me. I realized I had to let that fear go, I needed to proceed WITHOUT fear and before I knew it I was qualified and helping my first couple prepare for the birth of their first child. Just like it was so important for me to let go of the fear stopping me from following this passion, what is holding you back? What do you need to let go? Feel the fear, acknowledge the emotion or the limiting thought. Then scrunch it up, throw it away and let it go. Show up without fear and do something amazing! #birthwithoutfear #birthwithconfidence #hypnobirthing #showupeveryday #showupwithoutfear #removefear #fearrelease #showupforyourself #showupforyou #showup @ Richmond, Victoria See more
20.01.2022 Instinct. Mother’s intuition. Gut instinct. These things are real but have been somewhat forgotten in our culture. In these modern times when we are so fast-paced, so busy-minded and always focusing on one too many things these whispers can be easily drowned out. We can easily miss the messages our intuition is telling us unless we give ourselves the opportunity and permission to listen. When we properly relax (scrolling social media and Netflix do not count), when we sl...ow our brainwaves down, we are able to eliminate the ‘noise’ from our environment and clear the ‘clutter’ from our minds. This is when those whispers of our heart, our instinct, can be heard. Practising relaxation during pregnancy, during labour and during postpartum cannot be underestimated. This is the time when we really need to tune into our instinct and to what our body and our baby are telling us. More often than not, when we properly listen, we will not be led astray. The more you practise relaxation and listening closely, the more you will notice your heart is no longer whispering. With practise you will be able to hear your instinct loudly and clearly. #intuition #trustyourintuition #listentoyourheart #mothersinstinct #mothersintuition #gutinstinct #trustyourgut See more
19.01.2022 Your baby brings many gifts to facilitate a natural birth, not just the birthing person. Again, I could go on all day, but here are a few of my favs. Vertex Turn: Somewhere between 32 and 37 weeks of pregnancy (or sometimes not until just before labour and birth) your baby moves into its vertex position. The head is the heaviest part so gravity generally takes care of this. Relaxin: The amazing hormone that allows the birthing body to open also softens the baby’s skeletal... system to enable it to bend and move smoothly through the birth path. Fontanels: The head is the largest part of the baby but a newborn has many bones forming it’s skull with a soft membrane connecting them, this connective tissue forms the soft spots or the fontanels of their head. This allows the bones of the skull to shift, overlap and mould the head and change shape as it is born. These plates then settle into place and fuse together gradually over the first 18 months(ish) of your baby’s life. Look at this amazing moulding! The Breast Crawl: Colostrum (your first breastmilk) smells like amniotic fluid which helps baby want to crawl towards the breast and begin to feed. This breast crawl motion and the first breastfeed facilitates the natural closing down of the blood vessels between the uterus and the placenta and a flood of oxytocin assists the release of the placenta. #naturalbirth #fontanel #relaxin #oxytocin #naturesgifts #naturalchildbirth See more
18.01.2022 Is it just me or does helping your babies get to sleep make you feel completely at peace? By helping calm their mind, I calm my own. By steadying their breathing, I steady my own. By tapping into their parasympathetic, I activate my own.... By assuring them that they are loved, I feel it myself. By assuring them that they are safe, I feel that too. By being everything they need, they are all I need. What a special gift for this Monday. Thank you for bringing me back to every thing that is real and important, little man #sleepcreep #lessonsfromourchildren #grateful #letmehaveacuppa See more
17.01.2022 Portrait by Rose Today is one of those days I am never sure whether to celebrate publicly or not. There are so many people that find this day hard for many reasons. Whilst in this house we are celebrating this guy and the amazing job he does at being the most incredible dad, we are also celebrating and thinking of #allthedads in this world.... The dads happily spending today with their kids. The dads wishing they were spending today with their kids. The people dreaming and wishing they were dads. The not-yet dads. The dads who are grieving the loss of a child. The dads who had to say ‘goodbye’ before they even had the chance to say ‘hello’. The step-dads. The dads who are no longer with us. The people who are amazing role models and father figures. The many many dads. We are thinking of you all #fathersday #fatherfigure #dontforgetdads #stepdads #stilldads #allthedads
16.01.2022 Raspberry Leaf Tea for pregnancy, postpartum and menstruation. Currently transitioning back to a menstrual cycle, I am reminded how much change occurs within the body during pregnancy, birth and postpartum. This new cycle is not the same as those I am used to, there are differences I am noticing at every stage as I tune into my body. To help me adjust and support my body I find myself wanting to reach for methods used by the generations before me rather than the medicine ca...binet. I want to support my body, not create tension or put masks over it. During pregnancy, usually from around 34-36 weeks, Raspberry Leaf Tea can help both tone and relax the muscles of the uterus and pelvic floor. This means that come your birthing day your amazing uterus will be primed to work at its best! This could mean a shorter and more easy birth for you. These benefits also aid in postpartum recovery by helping the uterus retract to its original size after birth. I am currently using it before and during menstruation to help prepare my uterus, relieve symptoms of PMS as well as cramps. Let's hope I see these benefits, along with simply having a nice flavour to sip whilst I do my best to adapt to my body's new rhythm. #raspberryleaftea #raspberryleaf #uterinesupport #uterinehealth #menstrualsupport #womensbusiness #pregnancysupport #thisispostpartum #birthprep #birthpreparation #naturalmedicine See more
16.01.2022 Reposted from @hypnobirthinginternational this moment is everything, no matter the journey that lead to it. The culmination of everything you have planned and waited for - for the past 9 months. The moment you hold your baby in your arms.... Absolute joy, relief and pure happiness. How would you describe the moment you help your baby for the first time? 15.01.2022 Community is so important, I’m so glad to be able to help educate and empower mine. Thank you Richmond Community Learning Centre - RCLC for introducing me and my HypnoBirthing Courses as a resource continuing to be available during this lockdown period
15.01.2022 2021 is well and truly here and, like everyone I know, I am busting to get started! The covid-baby-boom is definitely real, and I am so looking forward to helping people prepare for empowered births as it really is such a transformational time. I have had lots of requests for my 2021 course options and the Group Course dates are now live on my website (link in bio). There is generally one Group Course per month (ish) and always capacity to take one or two P...rivate Courses as well. So, if you or someone you know is giving birth this year and they want to be informed, confident, and excited about birth I cannot wait to hear from you. #duein2021 #2021baby #covidbabybbom #lockdownbaby #hypnobirthing #hypnobirthinginternational #hypnobirthinginaustralia #positivebirth #confidentbirth #birthwithoutfear #joyfulbirth #joyfulbirths #rockyourbirth #birthbecomesyou #pregnancy #birthstory #pregnant #pregnancy See more
13.01.2022 Regram @australianbirthstories, this is said so well. Water in Labour By now you have probably heard that The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) has issued a statement this week denying women the use of water in labour. They see it as an infection control measure against COVID, regardless of the fact that there is no scientific or medical evidence to support their claim. There are many common threads that weave themselves th...roughout the stories I share on the podcast and the use of water to soothe and comfort, alleviate pain and settle even the most anxious of labouring women is one of them. Midwives have encouraged water immersion for eons; it is the most effective form of natural pain relief and has proven to reduce intervention and support natural, empowered birth. I am all for evidence-based and sensible recommendations when it comes to labour and birth but I don't agree with taking away a low-risk intervention that can significantly reduce the pain and discomfort of labour for those women who choose not to use anaesthesia. Pregnant women are already dealing with the anxiety and expectational grief of having only one support person at their birth, taking away water will only lead to more stress and possible intervention and trauma. There are no positives here. If you are a pregnant women I encourage you to talk to your midwives. Inform yourself so that you go into your birth space with knowledge. You have my support and that of the Australian College of Midwives. *To date I haven’t found a Melbourne hospital implementing this advice which brings me hope that it won’t be enacted @rebeccacoursey_photosandfilm
12.01.2022 I think I make it quite obvious my passion for educating birth companions as much as the birthing persons, but here’s a little reminder
12.01.2022 Rose calls this nice touches such a simple and effective way to flood your system with endorphins and feel good!
11.01.2022 Birth shrine, birth altar, birth board, birth wall, birth something I got a few questions on a recent story so I thought I would share some more info. A birth altar or birth shrine (if you have a cool name please let me know) is a space set up dedicated to give you visual and energetic prompts to help you maintain focus, motivation and clarity as you move through your labour and/or birth. It can consist of anything that speaks to you and keeps you in the moment and reminds ...you of your birthing intentions. Often affirmations, visualisations, photos, crystals and special items like booties or beanies for the newborn feature. Swipe for a few examples: the first is a lush example @camillelveron set up for her birth; the second is the set up from my stories to help Mum practice her birth breathing technique during pregnancy as well as a spot to labour at home. The last pic is a portable version. If you are planning a hospital birth you can take things with you to set up in the room, or do what a recent couple and I did. I set up a pinboard with a few prompts to guide our conversation as well as give them a starting point for their birth board. They now have this to make it theirs and have as a focal point at home during labour then take it with them to the hospital to maintain consistency of their labour and birthing environment. #birthaltar #birthspace #birthshrine #birthenvironmentmatters #birthenvironment #birthfocus #visualisation @ Richmond, Victoria
10.01.2022 The power of the birthing body There are countless gifts we are given to enable us to birth naturally and I could go on all day about each one. We were literally made for this, here’s a few reasons why * Engagement: When baby is almost ready to be born it will nestle into the pelvis putting the biggest part of it’s head in the widest part of your pelvis. * Relaxin: a hormone that is released during pregnancy and much more later in pregnancy helps * lubricate the ...vaginal walls to allow baby to move through * soften the lower part of the uterus and cervix to help shorten labour * ligaments in your baby body release and become more flexible * weaken the amniotic sac and allows it to naturally release * loosen skeletal ligaments allowing the pubis symphysis to shift forward to maximise space YES, your pelvis changes shape to allow your baby to pass! * Prostaglandins and oxytocin: Prostaglandins help pre-labour thinning and opening of the cervix. These then trigger oxytocin to cause uterine surges and the release the uterine seal. * Uterine Surges: This is the uterus muscles contracting, moving your baby towards and through the birth path. * Natural Expulsion Reflex (NER): The birthing body will ultimately take over! These uncontrollable pulsations eject or birth the baby without any assistance. It is the same reflex that cannot stop a vomit or a bowel movement should they need to occur. * Perineal Folds: As the head emerges from the vaginal outlet, the rim of the vagina can unfold and expand gently (if there is no forced pushing). * Placental Release: Once baby is born, the umbilical cord stops pulsating and baby begins to breastfeed to signal that the baby has no need for the placenta The blood vessels connecting placenta to the uterus shut down and this is birthed in a few more surges. 09.01.2022 What's included? Especially at the moment value for money, quality purchases and a great return on investment is critical. So... What do you receive for the investment in a HypnoBirthing course? What's the difference between Group and Private Courses? ... What you get at 'face value' of the course is as follows, but what you learn are techniques you can use postpartum and throughout your life. I use techniques that I learned five years ago almost every day to remain calm and think clearly, see perspective and set intent and to help me through tough situations. HypnoBirthing is also shaping the way I parent as I help Rose start to recognise and regulate her BIG emotions. I am teaching her the techniques too, so she will (hopefully!) benefit from the relaxation, affirmations and breathing techniques throughout her life. 5 x 2.5 hour sessions HypnoBirthing - The Mongan Method Text Book Guided relaxation tracks and other MP3s Handout booklet Resources to use on your birthing day Information on complimentary services Continued support throughout your pregnancy Birth debrief and celebration Public or Private? This comes down to the location and the individual tailoring of the course. You will receive the 'face value' content and the lifelong techniques with both options but where the Group Courses are set away from your home, the Private Courses are in the comfort and privacy of your own space. Your home is where you will likely be spending most/all of your labour so it is a great location to learn and practise throughout the course and your pregnancy. I keep my Group Courses small (up to three couples) but a Private Course enables it all to be about you as a birthing person, as a birth companion, as a couple and as a family. I can tailor the Course to your needs/knowledge/birth wishes/etc. Like with everything though: you get out what you put in. Whether you choose a Group or Private option it is up to YOU as a birthing couple to do your practise, decide on your preferences and prepare for the positive birth you dream of. #birthpreparation #hypnobirthing #childbirtheducation #birtheducation #birthclass #hypnobirthinginaustralia See more
08.01.2022 To all the mothers today. To those who have mothered before us and to all those who will mother after. #mothersday
07.01.2022 There are many benefits to water during labour and birth whether using a birth pool, a bath, a shower or simply a warm face washer. All of these can be used to calm the body, calm the mind and relax the lower uterine muscles to assist in an easier birth. Running water over the skin of the body and the belly is also a great way to stimulate all the nerve endings just under the skins surface and release endorphins. These are our bodies natural feel-good and pain relief hormone...s, up to 200 times more powerful than morphine! And the use of warm water used during crowning (even the simple warm face washer) can aid to soften and relax the perineal tissues to help them unfold gently and minimise tearing. How was water used in your birth?
05.01.2022 A woman as long as she lives, will always remember how she was made to feel at her birth - Anna Verwaal I always try to come from a place of solutions to positively shape birth as such a transforming experience. The announcements made yesterday about time limits for support people after birth created a lot of fear in the birthing community when they need to be uplifted and held. I don’t think that anyone could justify how they are fair and nurturing to the birthing person, ...the other parent or the baby. Please do a small and easy thing: sign this petition and share this post so that the voice of all birthing people can be heard. To all the expecting people, let us fight for you, let us be angry. You continue to ask questions of your provider (they may have better answers than you expect), continue to make the best decisions for you and your birth. Tune out the noise and the anger. We see you. We are with you.
04.01.2022 This moment! This image! It feels so good to do something positive and to help people! I spent today with two couples preparing for their moments like this in the coming weeks. After a week (or months really!) of riding all the emotions of the corona-coaster it felt good to talk about how to write your own story. Know the information, set intentions, do the work, make decisions and shape your own destiny, not have it decided for you.... Let’s all try that this week. Focus on what you can control, find something positive each day and help someone when you get the opportunity. Spread love, wherever possible Now, to put the phone down and pick up the knitting
03.01.2022 Use your BRAINS write your own journey to have an empowered experience. My biggest piece of advice to people approaching birth, especially at the moment, is often the same: talk to your care provider, ask them many many questions. By gathering as much information as possible you will be able to make CHOICES. This gives you the power and control over how each choices may impact you, your baby, your pregnancy, your birth and early post partum.... So how to use your BRAINS? Here is a handy framework on how to construct your questions with your care provider, especially about an intervention: B - what are the benefits? R - what are the risks? A - what are the alternatives? I - what is the indication that this is necessary? (Also, what do you instincts tell you?) N - what happens if we do nothing? S - please give us some space to make our decision.
