25.01.2022 The occupation of sleeping is an underrated one and here are a few reasons why...

25.01.2022 I have recently launched a new website! Please check it out and provide feedback! What would you like to see or read about? http://www.joyfulgrowth.com.au/ Many thanks to John Scott of Sunshine Coast Web Development!

22.01.2022 Look and listen. Whether you're a boss or a colleague this can help you understand people experiencing anxiety and how they cope with it. A little support can go a long way.!

17.01.2022 I haven't posted in a while but I feel the need to whilst in traveling in Vietnam. I think it's because they live such a simple life. But I'm such an OT that whatever I go I see 'occupation' everywhere. In Hoi An I went on a bicycle tour. There were only 4 of us with 2 staff. We travelled on a boat to an island just off the city and rode around two islands for two or three hours on squeaky bikes. But we stopped frequently to see locals doing traditional crafts. A 94 year old ...weaving bed mats with her daughter. One single-bed mat takes two people 4 hours. Sold for 100 000, materials cost 70 000 so they earn roughly 15000 each or less than $1AUD for their efforts. A 70-something year old weaving round boats about one and a half metres in diameter. Woven flat then curved and reinforced to be round, holes filled with cow dung and sealed with tree sap or tar. Steered with a single oar. But a dying occupation and the younger generation do not want to continue this art form. Making rice wine in a shed included the integral use of pigs... the details of this multistage process not need to be given but let's just say the resulting wine is 40 or 65% & wicked. The delicate art of inlaid shell carving on wooden objects. How painstaking. How intricate. How beautiful. Designing. Hand sawing shell. Gluing. Backfilling. Etching details. Polishing. Another occupation younger generations are not interested in learning. And boat building. Mostly with wood. Virtually no nails. Individually designed to suit the purpose. Again. ..dying out. So many occupations in one trip that may not be around in a few years. It's not just that these occupations are waning. I love that they have obviously been meaningfully occupying multiple generations for possibly hundreds of years and the skills have been passed down through families. For an OT who is endlessly interested in how people spend their time, what brings purpose to a person's life and how satisfied they are, it both gives my heart joy that there are serious things to be done on little islands and sadness that the world is changing for the youth within these villages. Thanks for reading if you made it this far! Long live meaningful occupation x PS more pics to follow when I get them off my camera See more

15.01.2022 Hi all, For many years I have sold a resource called the Occupational Therapy Intervention Resources, initially in a folder, then on CD and finally via download, however these are now available for FREE on my website. There’s nearly 100 files on core OT topics and include Hints for Therapists these provide ideas for therapists when addressing a particular topic with a client or group of clients. Handouts these are information sheets that summarise a topic. Workshe...ets these can be used with individuals or groups to explore a particular topic. The majority apply to OT’s across the board even though they were developed with mental health OT’s in mind. http://www.joyfulgrowth.com.au/free-resources/ Please distribute to your networks in mental health and beyond. Happy to have feedback or suggestions! Enjoy

15.01.2022 Today I want to write about the occupation of writing. Remembering that I do not mean writing as a job. I simply mean as a meaningful activity in your life. In particular, today is about journalling. There are no particular rules about how to write a journal - how frequently you make an entry is up to you. The purpose and meaning it has for you is quite unique and personal. Whether you explore your emotions that are difficult to put into words, or simply write letter to yours...elf about your day/week is your choice. If you wish to track patterns of thinking or moods you may want to be diligent and commit to regular entries for a certain time frame. Otherwise it may be for the pleasure of describing your life, or keeping a record of family events for future generations. No matter, writing with pen and ink is almost and art form these days, and the process itself can have therapeutic results. Stuck in a rut or unable to make a decision? Get out a piece of paper and write down what's going around inside your head for new-found clarity. PS no screens allowed! http://www.huffingtonpost.com//benefits-of-journaling-_b_6 See more

07.01.2022 How amazing ... the power and meaning of the occupation of gardening to this family and community in war torn Aleppo. A positive focus and meaningful activity in a time of uncertainty. Beautifying roundabouts. Selling flowers. And how tragic a story too. I hope someone continues this garden.

02.01.2022 Are you thinking about exercising? Considering cutting down on smoking? Contemplating a healthier diet? Yesterday I co-facilitated a full day workshop on Motivational Interviewing. This is a technique used to assist people to make behaviour changes. It's a philosophy (people are experts on themselves), involves skills (understanding the stages of change, active listening, open-ended questions, highlighting discrepancies between where people are and want to be, rolling with re...sistance) and tools to work WITH ambivalence. This is what I would like to focus on today. Ambivalence is natural when contemplating change. How often are there ONLY advantages to making a change? People engage in a range of risky behaviours because of the perceived benefits to them - despite the obvious or potential drawbacks eg smoking/using drugs, living a sedentary lifestyle, binge drinking, skydiving... What we know is that the more we TELL people why they should make a change, the MORE they provide reasons to continue (even if they were contemplating change)! Giving people advice, and telling them why they need to change DOES NOT WORK. Far better to have a person come up with their own reasons to change. The Decisional Balance Tool is one way to do this, and it gives equal credence to the pros and cons of staying the same and changing. This then provides the opportunity to weigh up the information. Try it out on something you've been thinking about changing! It's a simple grid, included with more info in a blog below. https://changeahead101.wordpress.com///decisional-balance/ See more

01.01.2022 Continuing my series of posts about Goals. This one focuses on finding motivation internally. Read more by simply going to my website!
