For example, if your child is struggling to put their shoes on, you can guide them to put their toes in first and then get them to press down on the Velcro straps.

19.01.2022 Are you expecting to welcome your baby home and in the process of setting up a baby area? Congratulations, these are the most magical moments, observing your newborn baby taking in the world around him/her. We are here to help you set up an area away from where your baby sleeps, that will support your child’s development from birth. We have our baby area set up in our lounge room, where we spend the most time as a family. It is also in a open space where we can observe fro...m the kitchen/dining area. Choose a space where it’s practical and safe for your family. We’ve created a list to help you get started: ~ Low Wall mirror A low wall mirror helps promote visual and body awareness, promotes tummy time, encourages movement and cognitive movement. ~ Black and White images/Munari Mobile Babies can only see black and white. Provide your child with high contrast black and white images or use the Munari Mobile. The Munari Mobile helps with tracking, focusing and visual sense. If you are using a mobile, make sure to place it 30cm away from your baby’s eyes ~ Movement Mat Place a mattress/mat next to the wall mirror to allow your child to freely move. ~ Low Open Shelf Place a low open shelf nearby, where you have a few grasping materials. Although your baby won’t be moving, they are still observing you. They will watch you place the material on their movement mat and put it back on the shelf once they have finished. Once they are crawling, they will be able to independently pick their own work that’s accessible to them. ~ Family photo Babies love looking at faces. Place family photos that are low for your child to look at. When setting up your space, remember that less is more Enjoy observing and talking to your baby.

15.01.2022 Is No your child’s favourite word?! We all want to reduce the times we say no during the day... and remember that if we keep saying no, it loses its meaning! So here are some helpful suggestions you can start doing at home today:... Create a YES environment Have things in the home that your child can safely do on their own. This can be a play area or a space close to where the family spends time the most, where they can explore, touch and create where parents won’t continuously say no to them. Say NO when it comes to safety It’s so natural for parents to say no to everything. No, don’t draw on the floor No, don’t do that No, that’s your brother’s toy. It’s very much a generational thing, our parents did it to us! We want to ensure that when we say no, our child knows no means no! So when we do say no, makes sure you follow through with your message. Replace NO and give some suggestions of what to do instead Here are some examples you can use instead of saying no, and providing guidance: You child is pulling the family dog’s hair. We use gentle hands and model how we pat the dog Your child is throwing balls inside the house near baby brother. I see you want to throw balls, let’s go outside Your child is standing on the dining table. We sit down when we’re eating. Can you put your bottom on the chair? I hope you find this helpful in the quest of not saying no at least five times during the day! What do you say instead of No?
15.01.2022 How we enter the classroom Your child will walk independently (if mobile) and find their photo Put our outdoor shoes on. Velcro shoes are great to promote independence Let your child independently change their own shoes and place their outdoor shoes back into their cubby. If your child needs assistance, help with one step. Try not to take over.... Morning greeting Enter the classroom and wash our hands Ask your child What would you like to do today? They will independently choose their own activity https://www.instagram.com/reel/CNyrlwpBhjY/

I’d you can’t make the live class, you will receive a replay. We use a lot of movement in class and interaction, so you would be surprised how long your child will sit and interact. An example of this is we will be playing a scavenger hunt game based on primary colours to begin with. In our learning pack, you will receive a print out for this. You will need to prepare your space by placing three objects of each primary colour that your child will find. We also have practical life activities where we prepare morning tea together, so it is still very hands on for your child - not all about visual watching - keeping it authentic Montessori. * CONTINUED IN COMMENTS*

09.01.2022 More tips for encouraging independence in young children. What do you do at home to foster independence with your child? What does your child love doing for themselves?... Repost @honeybee_psychology @honeybee_psychology I recently shared some tips from Ashley @joyfulmontessori to encourage children’s independence. In this post we will share some more tips but let’s first talk about why it is important to encourage independence in children? Ashley reflected that fostering independence allows children to feel valued, trusted and happy to do things that they are capable of on their own. At a young age, children are all about doing things for themselves. Nurturing this instead of having power struggles and taking over as a parent, essentially develops confident, empowered independent adults, who become their own person. There are so many benefits to encourage independence in our young children: - Power struggles decrease when a child feels more in control which means less meltdowns! - Children feel honored to be included inreal work. - Self-esteem and confidence grow. It is so important for children to learn life skills to prepare them for this world we live in, instead of just focusing on the academics. Here are some more tips to encourage independence in your little ones at home: A favourite Montessori quote: Help me help myself. It starts with a shift in the way us parents view our child’s capabilities. More times than others, we tend to hinder their development by doing things for our child that they are capable of doing themselves. Setting up your home environment as a Yes environment. Some ideas for the home: low shelves where they can pick their own activities to do and put away, access to a glass, plate and child-size tools to prepare a snack, a tissue box on a low shelf with a mirror to promote them to clean their own noses, a coat hanger placed at child’s eye level where they can hang their backpack and coat, learning tower placed in the kitchen to help with food preparation Embrace the mess: With independence, comes mess. Head over to @honeybee_psychology to read the rest

04.01.2022 Shift your mindset to My child is capable and a favourite Montessori quote: Help me help myself. It starts with a shift in the way us parents view our child’s capabilities. Think about that when you go to put your child’s shoes it’s starts with the small things that make a big impact.

02.01.2022 I had the great pleasure of talking with Melissa from @honeybee_psychology about encouraging independence in young children. Melissa is a psychologist and is an amazing resource for all things parenting and child development We hope these tips are helpful. ... Repost from @honeybee_psychology Young children have a deep desire for independence. Nurturing the gift of independence shows children that they are capable and empowers them to make sound choices-Ashley from Joyful Montessori sums this up so beautifully. Encouraging independence with my children is something I’ve always strived for. I recently had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Ashley to gain her valuable insights on this topic. Ashley recognises that parenting is a hard gig, it’s very rewarding but it does come with its many daily challenges, especially for first time parents. Ashley has a strong passion for working with young children and families during the critical developmental stages in life (0-6 years).
